IMLEA will be offering an in-person mini-conference on Saturday, March 12, at the beautiful conference center at Lebanon High School. We realize that this is not quite as centrally located as Indianapolis, but it is readily accessible from I-65, and will allow us to offer a less expensive opportunity. We also selected a Saturday knowing that covering classes for absences is very difficult these days. Our goal: a fun, informative day that provides time to be with other middle level educators! Tentative time: 11 am-3 pm EST. Stay tuned for a call for presentations and more details!
Led by teacher Tara Mitchell and assistant Miranda Waters, and supported by Tori Batson from Champions Together/Indiana Special Olympics, several students from Tri-West Middle School gave a live presentation during the AMLE conference. They shared their experiences in leadership, inclusion, forming relationships, and interacting with other schools while participating in Champions Together. If you are interested in Champions, you can contact Tori. In addition to athletic-type events, eSports and robotics are now included! The recording of their video will be available on the AMLE conference platform through December 17. (Schools can still register as well and view; all sessions but one were recorded.)

Horace Mann was already offering their Student Loan Forgiveness as a complimentary service to teachers, but now it is even more important! I just saw someone share their loan forgiveness for over $60k!

The Plimoth/Patuxet Museums have designed this "You are the Historian" game that students can use to explore the first Thanksgiving. The game investigates the interactions between the Wampanoag people of Patuxet and the earliest colonists known as the Pilgrims by exposing players to archaeological artifacts from the museum’s collections, primary source documents, and oral stories told from generation to generation.
Keep Indiana Learning has organized a streaming event this Thursday. You can watch by following their youtube channel (and watch later if you are unavailable Thursday.)
FAA Airport Design Challenge
The Airport Design Challenge is a seven-week interactive, learning and collaboration opportunity which begins on November 15, 2021 and concludes on January 14, 2022. The FAA Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Aviation and Space Education (AVSED) Program organizes and sponsors the challenge. It can be done as part of a class, an extra-curricular activity, as a team of up to 5 students, or individually. (Divisions are K-6 & 7-12)

Students have the opportunity to design virtual airports in Minecraft based on guidance from FAA aerospace and engineering experts. Participating students meet aviation professionals, engage with other designers, and learn about the aerospace industry.

Project POTUS Seeking Judges

Previously, we posted about the opportunity for students to enter the Project POTUS one-minute video contest via the Benjamin Harrison Home. (This could be a great classroom project!) Now they are looking for judges; they have begun to have interest from teachers and those in humanities professions in a few states outside of Indiana. They still have great need for judges willing to commit about 90 minutes of time in total to watch and score the videos from middle school participants during the jury rounds. The system will allow judging to be conducted remotely online, starting April 24, 2022. If you are interested, contact Molly Beausir or Susie Highley

Free Support for Indiana State Museum Programs

Schools or educational organizations may qualify for one of Indiana State Museum’s many school, outreach or virtual programs for free. Check out the lineup of virtual Connect and Explore programs today.

This is made possible with funding provided by the Indiana Academy of Science and the Arts Council of Indianapolis. Those who qualify for a free science program may also receive transportation reimbursement.

CELL Launches Indiana Special Education Assisted Licensure

CELL (Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning) has announced a new program to increase the number of fully-qualified special education teachers in Indiana. (I-SEAL)

This will include:

  1. Currently licensed teachers who wish to add special education to their existing license will have an opportunity to participate in a fully-funded 18 credit hour graduate program. Upon completion, they will be eligible for a special education license, pending a passing score on the state licensing exam.
  2. A limited number of unlicensed teachers who wish to earn a special education teacher license and currently hold a bachelor’s degree will be eligible to enroll in a fully-funded Transition to Teaching program (T2T).
  3. Individuals who have completed a special education preparation program but have been unable to pass the state licensing exam will have the opportunity to participate in special test-prep workshops to assist in obtaining the licensure cut score on the exam
