Youth Month 2023
Woodland Park’s annual Youth Month kicked off on April 18 with a visit from Mayor Kazmark to Memorial School. He described the program and its similarities to running for a real office. Students received descriptions of the jobs they could run for to be elected to by their peers.
“Participants get to learn about how every element of the town works,” Kazmark said, noting that he had served as a Youth Month councilman as a student in 1992.
Following election day at school, the students selected for the positions have a number of opportunities to see their government in action. On Thursday, a tour of the town included stops at Fire Company No. 2, the Department of Public Works, Board of Education building, municipal building, police department, and Alfred Baumann Library. This past Tuesday, the students sat in on a Borough court session with Judge Toni Belford-Damiano. On May 15 and May 17, students will run Board of Education and Mayor and Council meetings, respectfully, from the dais.
The 2023 Youth Month participants are:
- Mayor - Loujain Lafi

A Love For Reading
Students at Beatrice Gilmore School and first and second graders at Charles Olbon School last Friday enjoyed an assembly with author John Schu. A children’s librarian for the website Bookelicious, Mr. Schu is also a part-time lecturer at Rutgers University and shares his love of reading with countless educators and students around the world at assembly programs. Mr. Schu spoke about must-read titles, books that students are excited about, and his work as a reader and a writer. He also discussed the power of reading, the importance of school libraries, and ways to connect through stories. Dozens of students and teacher were very excited to randomly receive books from Mr. Schu and get them autographed after the assembly.
