NAESP: Report to Parents - 10-Kid Family Volunteer Ideas for Families
As principal at Butler Elementary, I often hear about some amazing things students do throughout the school year as it applies to "our place in the community." Many students offer their time to volunteer or to be involved with organizations like Girl & Boy Scouts, team/sport program events, and even family-focused efforts. It is a great way to make an impact and provides an opportunity for young people to make a positive impact or change to their community. In this month's NAESP: Report to Parents, the article shares ways families can volunteer together - in support of ideas with the child in mind.
"Volunteering teaches kids the importance of giving back to their communities. It also helps them grow as people, build strong self-esteem, develop social and life skills, and show appreciation. Families can use these kid-friendly volunteer ideas to encourage their children to make a difference in their community and help them cultivate compassion, empathy, and a passion for helping others"

Department Updates
Library Corner
Second graders are using the Destiny Library Catalog to locate nonfiction book titles and their call numbers. A call number is a book’s address in the library. This can be a challenging task as nonfiction books are organized by the Dewey Decimal System and can have very long call numbers with decimal points in them, as well as the first three letters of the author’s last name. Second graders are excited for this challenge which will enable them to further increase their independence in locating books in the library.
Quest Updates
We live in an amazingly high-tech world, surrounded by electronic gizmos and gadgets. Because our lives are so infused with electronics, everyone – engineers, entrepreneurs, students, and artists alike – can greatly benefit from learning more about them.
Students in Fifth grade just completed a great unit focused on civil engineering and electrical engineering. After exploring both fields, the students were presented with two challenges. The first challenge was to design a town to support a community's essential needs. Student teams created stores such as food places, places for gas, and community buildings. Teams then considered buildings or places that people want to have nearby. Once the town was designed, the second challenge was presented. This challenge focused on creating a circuit to light up the town. Building off of their fourth-grade knowledge, students tested their skills to light up the "night" sky!
The Art Pallette
Second grade artists studied the life and art of Henri Matisse. Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was an Abstract Expressionist who was part of a group of artists known as the “Fauves” or “Wild Beasts” because of their exceptionally wild use of color. Students learned of Matisse’s innovative way to “paint with scissors” when he became unable to paint traditionally. They created patterns with crayon and painted with watercolor to create a wax resist.
