Celebrating Fall
The hallways at all of our schools are abuzz with the daily activities that we cherish and embrace each year. We are beginning to see the incredible artwork of our students on bulletin boards and in display cases; we hear the sounds of our orchestras and bands hard at work on this year's performance pieces; and we see our Tigers in the stands at our exciting athletic events. The pride and respect that our staff and students show for our schools and each other through all of these activities is a true reflection of what they are taught both at home and in the classrooms.
I invite you to nominate a classroom teacher or educational services professional for the Governor's Teacher of the Year Award. The award goes to members of our TPS staff who make a difference in the lives of our students. It may be difficult to pick just one, but if you have reaped the benefits of one of our many wonderful teachers or educational professionals, please consider nominating that person today.
There are many wonderful events coming up throughout the next few months from our counselors, guidance office, HSAs, and at each of our schools. See below for just a few of these events and visit your school's website for details.
Yours in Education,
Shauna C. DeMarco

The Monarch Migration at Smith Elementary
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Smith Elementary School 5th graders in teacher Sara Miguel's Spanish class worked on a Symbolic Monarch Migration project. The 5th graders decorated a symbolic butterfly, including a short note in Spanish. The butterflies were mailed to the Northern Journey Organizacion where they will be given to students in the monarch sanctuary area where the monarchs migrate during this time of the year.
In the spring, students in Mexico will color their butterflies and send notes back to our students, imitating the migration of the monarch butterfly.
