May 7, 2023- Community Newsletter
Dear Monomoy Middle School Families,
This week I would like to highlight some amazing work being done with our 6th grade students and staff. 6th Graders at MRMS just finished reading The Finest Hours by Michael Tougias and Casey Sherman. As part of this unit, students have been trying to answer the question: what does it mean to be a hero? Students interviewed local community members who they believed to be heroes to try to answer this question. As a culmination of the unit, students watched the rescue unfold at the Chatham Orpheum Theater. Chatham Bars Inn hosted our annual Community Hero Celebration, where the community members and students interviewed were invited to lunch to celebrate all their hard work! Lunch was donated by the Red Nun, Family Table Collaborate, Mom and Pops, Shaws as well as Chatham Bars Inn. Part 2 of the field trip got students out and about in the community: learning to throw a heaving line at the Coast Guard Station, practicing Morse Code at the Marconi Maritime Center, and exploring the Nickerson North Beach Camp at the Atwood House. The best feedback we got from the trip was- "Can 7th graders go again next year?"
A special thanks to Ms. Sheppard and Ms. Botsford for taking the helm here!
Sincerely,
Adam O'Shea
Principal
Announcements
STEM Teacher of the Year at MRMS: Congrats to Ms. Gifford for being awarded the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) Teacher of the Year by the Patriots Hall of Fame organization. The announcement was made by Chairman and CEO, Robert Kraft. As this year’s recipient of the honor, Monomoy Middle School will receive $5,000 from the Patriots Foundation in her name to be used for STEM education. Gifford will also be appointed to Governor Maura Healey’s STEM Advisory Council, chaired by Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll. What an honor!
We're Making News! Click here for a radio interview of our very own 7th grader Breonna M. who recently won the governor's essay contest. Breonna certainly has a bright future where she is already committed to working on issues of equality.
Truro's NEED Academy: This past week wrapped up our 5th grade trips to Truro. The staff up there was raving about what great groups they have had coming from MRMS. Thank you to all the teachers, students, and parents for all your support to make this magical experience happen!
Old News and Reminders
Students Selling Items: Please be aware that students are not permitted to bring in items to school for sale. For example, it is not permitted for a student to buy packs of gum in bulk and then sell them individually to students at school for profit. The exception to this would be for a school approved fundraiser. If you have any questions regarding this, please reach out to the MRMS school administrators.
