Tumuaki | Principal Update
Kia ora e te whānau,
It was fantastic to have so many parents and whānau members join us last week for our Mid-Year Collaborative Connects. Your active involvement in these conferences strengthens the connection between home and school, ensuring that together, we can support your child in reaching their full potential for the rest of the year.
Our teachers have been busy this term writing learning snapshots shared on Hero. These posts are a great reflection of the learning happening in the classroom with valuable next learning step information. With the holidays coming up, these next learning suggestions can be used to support your child's learning at home. We are loving reading the comments you make on these posts - thank you for showing this engagement.
Over the next couple of months, there will be more work happening around our school, including the installation of a new turf and drainage system and a significant water system upgrade. We kindly ask everyone to avoid the building and turf areas during the upcoming school holidays to ensure everyone's safety.
Our pool is also scheduled for repainting, a new salt chlorinator installation, and a roofing replacement on the pool shed. Unfortunately, this will result in a delay in the pool opening date. With warmer weather approaching, we will keep you informed about when the pool will be ready for use.
This year's Cross Country event was a huge success. A big thank you to everyone who helped with the setup, baking, packing up, and marshalling. We are grateful to the Spall whānau for allowing us to use their land for the event again this year. Our course is a cut above the rest and is an event looked forward to by many.
Have a great end to the week.
Noho ora mai,
Kelsie Allen

Farewell Ms Bentley!
This term, we bid farewell to Cathy Bentley, a much-loved teacher at Kererū School who has been at Kererū School for the past five years. As you know, next term Cathy will be moving to Waipukurau and has secured a position in Early Childhood Education at Launch. While we will miss Cathy, we know she will excel in her new role, utilising her skills to help 4-year-olds transition to school. Sally Charteris and I will job share the Kākano (Junior Room) position until the end of the year.
We invite everyone to join us for a farewell assembly at 2 p.m. on Thursday, the 21st.
Totara (Y4-8) Learning
Financial Literacy
In Totara, we have been learning all about Financial Literacy this term.
Financial Literacy by Isabel
In Totara we have been using Banqer to learn about financial literacy and how things work as an adult.
Budget
- I’m going to talk about my budget for when I'm older. If I had a budget for food it would most likely be $100 since it can get me quite a lot. Also, I would buy off brand things to keep it simple and cheap.
Job
- When I’m older I want to break horses in and work with them for people and also sell them. I’d also want to be a farrier or a car mechanic since I’m interested in cars and horses. I would love to have my own farm one day, maybe with a husband and a family. Even though boys can slow you down, although they can also be quite useful.
Car
- I said I would want a car when I get old enough to drive but now I’m not so sure since you’ve got to pay a lot of money to buy one from about $1,000 to $100,000 just to buy one. It also needs a service, road usage, registration, gas and much more. And I thought just buying one was a lot, I might as well use a horse instead since they are cheaper.
After getting told this, I’ve learnt that being an adult is hard and costs tons of money. So make sure to enjoy living with your parents as long as you can and learn as much as possible about adult life.

Taniwha by Emmie
Once upon a time there was a mysterious Taniwha. The Taniwha was bathing in the water. The Taniwha was living in a cave on an island. The island that the Taniwha was living on had lots of mountains. The Taniwha scared all the sharks. The Taniwha ate fish for breakfast so he threw up on a shark!
Taniwha by Ziggy
Once there was a Taniwha and it was so big that it could swallow a big octopus and with the end of it's tail it can sting.
Taniwha by Emmett
I was on a ship and an aeroplane crashed into me and I landed on an island. Their was no food so I jumped into the water and I turned into a Taniwha so I could hunt down fish and eat fish for my whole life and drink sea water.
What have we been up to?
Science Roadshow
On the 22nd of August we travelled to Te Mata Primary School in Havelock North. The kids got to see science experiments first hand and some got to participate too. A huge thank you to the parents that drove. Without your help we couldn't attend cool things like this!
Cross Country
Our tamariki should be so proud of themselves in their efforts for the cross country this year. We competed against Maraekakaho, Pukehamomoa and Sherenden Schools. The weather gods blessed us with with a magical day of sunshine! A huge thank you to FOKS and TOTS families for organising the food stall. The treats were delicious! To all of the families that helped with the set up and pack down THANK YOU!! This is not an easy task, but together it was a fun one.

Kererū School Policies & Procedures
The school works on a subscription basis with SchoolDocs to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies that have been well researched and follow the Ministry of Education National Administration Guidelines. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behaviour management, reporting to parents, etc.
SchoolDocs updates, modifies, or creates policies in response to changes in legislation or Ministry guidelines, significant events, reviews/requests from schools, and regular reviewing from the SchoolDocs team. Our board of trustees has the opportunity to view changes/additions and comment on them before they are implemented. We will advise you when policies are up for review and how you can take part in the review.

Regular Office Reminders
Absences
Hero gives you (parents) the opportunity to send through your child's absence with a click of a button. This is a quick, efficient way and gives our staff a notification and message of the reason your child is away.
This is the way we would like you to let us know if your child won't be here. If there is additional information that the school needs to know, please contact Sheryn directly.
Bus Communication
Unless we have heard otherwise, or you put on your sheet at the beginning of the term, we will assume that your child is on.
You need to contact Sheryn (Mon - Thurs) or Kelsie (Fri) before 2 pm with any changes.
Potential Enrolments
We would love to hear from you if your child is between 1 and 4 years old. To make sure we have you on our 'potential enrolments' list.
Please email office@kereru.school.nz or follow the link to our enrolment section on our website to find out more information.
Sickness
If your child is unwell, please keep them at home to prevent the spread of the illness.
Gastro
- "People with gastro should not go to work, school and early childhood centres until they have been well (symptom free) for 48 hours. There will be viruses in your poos for several weeks after you become well. You should continue to wash and dry your hands thoroughly after you have been to the toilet."
