Tips for a Better Work-Life Balance
Being an adult is challenging. Not only do you need to take care of yourself, there are children and extended family members who may depend on you. Let's face it, everyone's plate is full! For many in the workforce, achieving any type of work-life balance seems impossible especially when technology has made us accessible around the clock.
Let go of perfectionism - As your life goes on, it gets more complicated. Your work responsibilities increase and your family gets bigger. To avoid burning out, strive for excellence and not perfection.
Unplug and Take Time for You - It's important to remember that "free time" does not mean that you need to be available for others. It's important to remember that you can turn invitations down for no other reason than you want that time for yourself. Be sure to set aside times to just shut off your phones (or leave it in another room on silent), and enjoy the moment. Set aside time for what is important to you.
Reduce Stress and Exercise - Even when you are busy, make time for exercise. Dedicating a few times each week for self-care is a great form of stress reduction. Join groups or sign up for classes that meet after work.
Manage Your Time - If you are going to act on your priorities, you need to dedicate time for them and determine what needs to be trimmed from your schedule. Create firm boundaries so you can devote quality time to the high-priority people and activities.
Change the Structure of Your Life - Make changes in your life that could make life easier, instead of trying to do it all. Going into the office earlier when it is quiet and you are more productive....
Start Small - Take small steps to balancing your life and build up to your goals.
Sweet Potato and Turkey Chili
1 lb. ground turkey
1 small onion, chopped
2 cups chick broth
1 can (15 oz.) sweet potato puree or canned pumpkin
1 can (4 oz.) chopped green chilies
1 tbs. chili powder
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. ground cumin
1 tsp. curry powder
1/2 tsp. dried oregano
1/2 tsp. salt
1 can (15-1/2 oz.) great northern beans, rinsed and drained
Sour cream, fresh cilantro, and sliced red onions are optional
In a large skillet, cook turkey and onion over medium heat until the turkey is no longer pink and onion is tender, about 5-7 minutes. Be sure to break up the turkey into small crumbles. Drain and transfer into a slow cooker.
Stir in broth, sweet potato puree, green chilies, and seasonings. Cook covered on low 4-5 hours. Stir in beans and continue cooking until thoroughly heated, about 1 hour.
If desired, top with sour cream, cilantro, and red onions.
