News for K-12 families at Hillsboro Online Academy
A message from Ms. Freudenthal!
I hope this message finds you well-rested and ready for an exciting new academic year! The beginning of a new year is always a time of anticipation and enthusiasm, and we are happy to have each and every one of you as part of our HOA community. Our staff is committed to providing a nurturing and engaging online learning environment that promotes academic growth, creativity, and a sense of community.
We understand that online learning comes with its own set of challenges, and we want to assure you that we are here to support both students and parents every step of the way. Regular communication will be a key component of our approach, and we encourage you to reach out with any questions, concerns, or feedback you may have.
Thank you for choosing HOA as your partner in education. We look forward to a fantastic year filled with learning, laughter, and memorable moments. Let’s start this year off strong together!
Warm Regards,
Shannon Freudenthal
HOA K-12 Administrator
Attendance Matters!
The Daily Attendance question is in each student's homeroom or advisory class! It will show up on students' dashboard in the to-do area as well as their calendar. They also have access in their homeroom/advisory modules. Each attendance question opens up at midnight and closes at 11:59PM of that day Monday-Friday. Students will have a 24-hour period to complete their attendance question.
SAT Scam Alert
There are individuals calling families offering SAT Support and Supplies. They are asking for credit card information to hold in case materials are returned. This is a scam and we encourage all families to research the offer before providing credit card information over the phone.
Drop-Off & Pick-Up reminder for Tamarack
Drop-Off Procedures:
Please bring students to the front door of Tamarack Elementary (by the FlagPole). Parent parking is in the lot on Kinnaman Rd. Students will check-in with the greeter and then be escorted to either the gym, music room or upstairs. Family members are not allowed to stay on campus like in the past during class time. However, if an adult is an approved volunteer and actively supporting a teacher during class time, that is fine. Please help us to keep kids safe by parking and then walking them to the door. If you arrive late and you don’t see the door greeter, please take your student to the main office to check-in.
Pick-Up Procedures:
Pick-up will also occur at the Tamarack front office entrance. We must see you in order to release your student(s). Please use the same procedure as drop-off (park and walk up), and then your student will be released to you. If you are picking up a student early from an activity, please pick them up at the Main Office. Our office manager, Karen, will call up to the classroom teacher to have them dismissed.
Priority Transfer Window Open
All students attending HOA are on one-year transfers that expire in June. If you plan on returning to HOA for the 2024-2025 school year, the priority transfer window is open until January 31! You can submit a “Current Transfer Continuation Request” now and will be processed by mid-February.
We encourage you to submit your Transfer Renewal Request even if you are still deciding about returning to HOA in September. The next transfer window will be April 1-May 15 and families will receive notification in July.
If a transfer is not received, students will be re-enrolled in their neighborhood school. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our office at 503-844-1050.
Parent Connect
Our next Parent Connect/Coffee Chat will be
January 17 at 10:15 am.
This one will be a special hybrid online and in-person event at Tamarack. To join online, please log into meet.google.com/myk-ciai-dph
Our Instructional Coach, Mr. Burnsed will be going over some Canvas/Remind/general tech tips for parents and students!
STAMP Test with Mrs. DeWhitt
My name is Shellie DeWhitt and I will be administering the STAMP test this year. In order to get class credits in your language, you will need to pass the reading/writing/speaking/listening sections of your test. The nice thing is, you will be able to take the test at home or at Tamarack Elementary in South Hillsboro. In order to be able to take the test from home, you will need a room where you can be by yourself, a camera on your computer, and a microphone on your computer.
All you need to do right now is fill out this form so that I know if you are interested and when to reserve space for you. SIGN FORM UP FOR STAMP TEST
Feel free to email me with any questions!
I look forward to hearing from you-
Shellie DeWhitt
Student Password information
In order to improve the account security of our students, Hillsboro School District made changes to their password policy. Here is the new student policy:
- Default maximum password age of 375 days.
- Pre-K to Grade 2 student passwords never expire.
- Elementary student minimum length: 8-characters
- Middle school student minimum length: 10-characters
- High school student minimum length: 12-characters
The minimum password length setting was applied to all students on December 4, 2023. If a user currently has a password that is shorter than the minimum length, the system will continue to allow them to sign in with that password. Only when they change their password will they need to pick a longer password if the policy requires it.
Students who have reset their password at the start of this school should not expect their password to expire until next school year (2024-25).
If your student is having trouble logging in to their Chromebook, please give our office a call.
Immunization Exclusion Day
Washington County Public Health encourages parents and caregivers to get their children up to date on required immunizations. Oregon law requires that all K-12 students as well as day care/child care attendees are up to date with specific vaccine series based on their age or grade. Students who are not up to date by February 21, 2024, will not be able to attend their school or day care until they get up to date.
Individuals can see their health care provider for vaccines. In addition, Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center (503-601-7400) and Neighborhood Health Center (503-848-5861) will be providing vaccines at their respective school-based health centers across the county. Virginia Garcia’s 7th Avenue Clinic in Hillsboro also offers childhood vaccines and is open to anyone.
Those without insurance or a primary care doctor can call the Washington County Health Care Resource Line at 503-846-8851 to be directed to a clinic location.
