News from the Library....
This week Kindergarten has been talking about their favorite things to do over vacation time. We read the book "The Best Vacation Ever" by Stuart Murphy. The students discovered that sometimes the best vacations are those that happen closest to home, especially when you live in such a wonderful place like Cape Cod.
Grade 1 is working on their culminating project from their Animal Research unit. The students are creating a visual display of facts, important and interesting discoveries, and illustrations to showcase their animal of study. This will take us a few classes to complete.
Grade 2 is presenting their first "Book Talk" this week. Students paired up with another classmate, chose a short fiction or nonfiction selection, read the book and prepared a short book talk about their book. Each group had to give the title, author, genre, a brief description and their recommendations for their chosen book. It's been fun to see the students all have a chance to shine as the presenters this week.
Grade 3 and 4 have started a poetry unit this week. Students have been discussing the elements of poetry, different kinds of poetry and have started writing some poems of their own. It is exciting to see the creativity and ideas flowing!
Also, a reminder that we are quickly approaching the end of the school year and it is a great time for students to start bringing in any Library books that need to be returned.
Thank you,
Mrs. Whitney
First Grade Anti-bullying Lessons with Grade Four This Week
Mrs. Cleary’s fourth grade class and Mrs. Hanson’s first grade class paired up for a MARC bullying lesson this week. Each student told their buddy three things about themselves and discussed how to be a good friend. Then each pair made a poster together representing one of the ways to be a good friend. Everyone had a great time and look forward to another paired activity next week.
Author's Celebration in Kindergarten
We were so happy to share our personal narratives with our families. We have been talking a lot about the role of the author and illustrator. We began this process by reading several stories that shared some important small moments in a person’s life. We sketched out four ideas of our own and chose one of those the be the topic of our personal narrative. We then created a story map that we completed with the characters, setting, beginning, middle and end of the story. The next step was to make a practice copy. Our goal with this was to just get our thoughts down on paper. When this was complete we talked about the conventions of grammar. Each day when write we begin by reciting our chant, “Uppercase, space, space, space, period in its place. Don’t forget the lowercase!” We used this to help us create our published copy complete with an About the Author page. We practiced reading our books several times and were ready for our author's celebration.
The children all received so many wonderful compliments on their writing!
"Connor, I love how you found a secret passage. It was mysterious!"
"Nice Story Emily. Well written and sounds like a fun Christmas memory."
"Chloe-Ann, Awesome job. I like pirates too. They are so cool and interesting! Aargh!"
"Matthew. Great job! Good luck collecting coins!"
"Ryder, you wrote about my favorite time of the year! I also like the pictures."
"Sonia, fun story. I love your Disney adventure"
"Angel, nice description words! I like how you saved the wallet until the very end. Your story was suspenseful. Nice spelling and writing."

Students in Art grades 2-4 have been learning and exploring Fiber Arts.
Grades 2 have learned how to weave using cardboard looms and how warp and weft threads can create a weaving.
Grade 3 has been weaving on plastic cups which has been a twist of a traditional loom. Grade 4 students are working on embroidery and sewing to create pillows. First each students created sketches of their image design. Then they cut their pieces from felt and are currently using a bit of embroidery and appliqué to attach their design onto the front of pillow. Finally they will be sewing and stuffing their pillows for completion.

Sun safety! From the Nurse's Office:
We would like take a moment to remind you to help us protect your children from sun exposure. Please apply sunscreen daily. Over-exposure to ultraviolet (UV) causes damage to our skin. Don’t forget that it also causes damage to our eyes.
For optimal eye protection wear sunglasses which block 99-100% of both UV-A & UV-B rays.
Make sure the sunglasses fit well and are large enough to shield your child’s eyes from most angles. Wrap around glasses are best for active children.
Wide-brimmed hats greatly reduce the UV radiation that reaches your child’s eyes. Baseball caps are good too.
The Environmental Protection Agency has excellent educational materials for teaching sun-safe behaviors in children. You can access the SunWise Program at www.epa.gov/sunwise
The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention has designated the Friday before Memorial Day as “Don’t Fry Day.” The goal is to make sure people stay safe in the sun and protect their skin while enjoying the outdoors—on “Don’t Fry Day” and every day. Here’s why. Skin cancer is on the rise in the United States; the American Cancer Society estimates that one American dies every hour from skin cancer. In 2012 alone, the American Cancer Society estimates there will be more than 76,250 new cases of malignant melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. “Don’t Fry Day” offers simple steps that you and your family can take to prevent sun-related skin cancer, such as:
Slip! Slop! Slap! Wrap!
• Slip on a shirt
• Slop on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher
• Slap on a wide-brimmed hat.
• Wrap on sunglasses. www.skincancerprevention.org.

Box Tops
Clipping Box Tops is an easy way to help earn cash for our school. Each one is worth 10¢ for our school!
Just look for the pink Box Tops on hundreds of products. All you have to do is clip them and send them to school. Please attach them to the collection sheet being sent home or put them in a Ziploc baggie. The PTO would like to get as many Box Tops as we can in Oct for our first submission deadline. This is a great way to help the PTO earn money for important supplies and equipment for CES.
