District Promise
Every student in the Stanwood-Camano School District is empowered to learn in an inclusive setting and is prepared for the future of their choice.
Stanwood High School Vision Statement
Stanwood Spartans are united in cultivating character, modeling respect, teaching leadership and connecting to community.
I hope you all have had a great holiday season. As we return to school after a two-week break, I wanted to reiterate expectations. We will continue to enforce our closed campus policy during lunches and our behavior expectations during games and events. Please see below:
SPECTATOR EXPECTATIONS
Be kind and respectful to EVERYONE on the court, mat, or in the pool. There is a shortage of coaches, officials, and event staff, without which our athletic programs couldn’t operate. We ask that you practice kindness, follow directions, and respect others.
Leave coaching to the coaches. It creates a negative situation for our student-athletes when spectators coach from the stands. If you have questions or comments for coaches, please feel free to reserve them for a scheduled meeting.
Using vulgarity, profanity, or noisemakers is prohibited at all times. Negative words can create a negative environment for players and spectators of all ages. The WIAA prohibits the use of noisemakers.
Be an advocate for positivity. Cheer for our team only; do not call out opponent names or numbers. If you see or hear anything offensive, please report it to the nearest event personnel to address it promptly.
If a spectator cannot adhere to the expectations set forth by the District, they will first be issued a warning. If the behavior continues, an administrator will ask them to leave, and gameplay may be suspended until they are removed from the premises. Once removed, they cannot attend the next athletic event until a parent meeting with an administrator is held to discuss behavior and decide when to return. This applies to all Spartan spectators attending home and away events.
Here are a couple of additional reminders for entering home events at SHS:
Students must present their ASB card for entry (not a picture)
Booster Club members must show Passes for entry.
No outside food or drink
No student re-entry
No bags/backpacks
No sports equipment, such as balls
I look forward to returning to school. Have a Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
Mike Washington
Principal
Interventions By Identified Period
The Spartan Leadership Team reviewed data from 1st quarter, and it was noted that 20% of our students received an F during 1st quarter. To address this issue, we are implementing an intervention for during certain periods on January 9th (1st period), 11th (2nd period), 12th (3rd period), 16th (4th period), 18th (5th period), and 19th (6th period). During these days, students can make up missing assignments approved by their teachers and receive additional assistance during the identified period for that day.
Emergency text alert sign-up
Thank you to those who have already signed up for our emergency text alerts. However, many have not confirmed the service by replying Y or YES to the text from 67587. Alternatively, those who have signed up already and did not confirm can simply send a text with Y or YES to 67587 to officially opt-in to the service.
If your student has not signed up to receive emergency alerts, they can sign up anytime! Signing up for these alerts is a two-step process:
- SIGN UP — Students who want these emergency alerts should complete this form: https://forms.gle/Ng63ucUA2CDbA4ee7
- CONFIRM — They'll later receive a text from 67587 requesting they opt-in by replying Y (messaging and data rates may apply) to officially receive these important informational text messages
Parent cellphone numbers are already configured to receive these alerts when needed.

A Few Reminders
Parking Lot Safety
When driving on campus, please drive slowly and look out for our students. Students walk all over campus throughout the day; one may walk across the street at a moment's notice, so please be aware. Thank you for helping to keep our students safe.
Drop Off and Pick Up
Students may only be dropped off and picked up in our Main parking lot off of 272nd. Please DO NOT use the lower parking lot to drop off and pick up your student, that area is for busses and staff only. Thank you!
Payments in the Office
Just a reminder that we cannot take payments from students during class time. We can take payments before and after school and during lunches. If you have a Running Start or Lincoln High student, we can accept payments before class or before they leave campus. Parents can pay at any time during the day (the register is closed between 12:30 and 1:15 pm). Parents/Guardians can pay online at any time by selecting the Online Payments button on our webpage. Thank you!
Two important Updates Regarding Bus Passes and Attendance
We have two changes in protocol that we would like you to be aware of; both will begin on our return from Winter Break on January 3rd.
The first will be that we will accept bus passes via email. If a parent/guardian calls in before 12:30 pm, they can be instructed to send an email to office staff taking the call. We will verify the parent's name and email address and send a response that we have received/accepted the emailed request. We will still only accept requests from a parent or guardian. Please include in the email: your student's name, the name of the friend they are riding with and bus route they will be on.
The second update will be that we will accept any tardy or absence due to car or traffic issues as excused. If a parent or guardian calls in, sends a note, email, or enters on Skyward that their student is late due to vehicle or traffic issues, we can excuse that tardy or absence.
Performing Arts Course Interest Survey - For Students
The Stanwood High School Fine Arts Department is looking for student feedback about what kind of performing or non-performing musical arts courses they would like to explore at SHS. We will pursue creating potential new courses based on this data. All proposed course options would allow any student to be successful regardless of previous musical experience.
We hope all students look at the options presented in the survey and rank the options from the course they are most interested in to the least interesting. Students must log into their SCSD Google accounts on their internet browser to access and take the survey.

Mark Your Calendars!
Is your student struggling? When are teachers available for assistance?
Students who are struggling are strongly encouraged to ask their teachers for assistance. Teachers are available for extra support from 7:10 am to 7:40 am and 2:10 pm to 2:40 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and 8:30 am to 9:00 am and 2:10 pm to 2:40 pm on Wednesdays. Students should work with teachers to schedule time.
You Are Not Alone
The Snohomish County Youth Suicide Prevention Taskforce is hosting a youth suicide prevention event February 3rd, 2024 from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at Rosehill Community Center in Mukilteo. Although this is not a Stanwood-Camano School District program, we want to share this opportunity with our families.
There will be workshops, resources, art, therapy dogs and more. We hope to provide much support. Please see the attachment below for additional information, including registration.
Staff By Department
Applications available for our Highly Capable program
The nomination period is open for Stanwood-Camano School District’s Highly Capable Program. The class is for exceptionally advanced learners in reading and math for students in grades K-12.
Consider making a nomination if you believe your student is performing significantly above grade-level in reading and/or math and possesses the following learning characteristics:
Capacity to learn with unusual depth of understanding, to retain what has been learned, and to transfer learning to new situations;
Capacity and willingness to deal with increasing levels of abstraction and complexity;
Capacity to make unusual connections among ideas and concepts;
Capacity for learning at an accelerated rate;
Capacity for intense concentration and/or focus.
Nomination packets are available from school building secretaries or on the district’s Teaching & Learning webpage. The nominations are due by January 26.
The District Selection Committee screens all nominations. Students meeting the screening criteria will complete further assessment to determine eligibility for program services. Assessment of nominated students is scheduled from March 4-22. Families are then notified between May 8-12

WESCO Spectator Guidelines & Sportsmanship Code
The essential elements of character-building and ethics in interscholastic athletics are embodied in the concept of seven core principles: sportsmanship, discipline, leadership, teamwork, responsibility, dedication, and respect. To demonstrate sportsmanship in the stands, we ask all spectators to adhere to these 5 basic guidelines:
- I will appreciate all good plays and players, whether they compete for my team or my opponent.
- I will remember that school athletics are an extension of the classroom and that learning is taking place.
- I will be positive and use respectful language towards players, coaches, officials, and other spectators.
- I will respect the abilities and sensitivities of our opponents and officials, regardless of the outcome of the contest.
- I will remember that my actions reflect on others, including students, school, and the community.
