Surfside Shark Bites
Week of September 18 - 22
A Note From Principal Frandsen
Happy Friday, Sharks and families!
Our soccer team has been practicing and they look strong, Art projects in all grade levels are looking good, and the vibe across campus is strong and positive. Even though there are lots of great experiences at Surfside, School is not always easy, and sometimes it may not be fun, the goal is to prepare students for the next year and ultimately life after high school. When things get hard, we are here to support you with a variety of resources including tutoring, counseling, and mentoring. If you need something let us know.
For those students enrolled in Surfside's direct instruction learning, please know that we are only 2 weeks away from the end of the quarter. This leaves just enough time to complete any outstanding assignments in order to bring those grades up. Please remind your student to attend every class, every day and get that work done. Of course, we are here to help should questions arise or if help is needed.
Thank you and have a great weekend!
Principal Frandsen

Student Writing
This year, we are focusing on student writing goals and writing proficiency. Some of these include punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. Students always amaze us as they strive to meet their goals! Students in Kindergarten are trying to write 5 words on their own and they receive help as they orally share their story and have a teacher write for them. 1st grade students are trying to write 10+ words; 2nd grade students' goal is 20+ words; 3rd grade is 30+ words; etc. We have been learning about characters and settings as we incorporate art and students have already been very successful. Virtual students at home are provided the same lessons. Please ask to see their stories because many want to keep writing and have fantastic ideas. We will continue to build as the year continues, and some students are already close to writing 200+ word stories in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. Our goal is to inspire young minds to write great stories and research papers. Great job, everyone!
Our Community
We are proud of how well our students learn to work, adapt, and build a safe community for all learners. K-5 students learn to interact with each other in healthy ways and how to problem solve, if conflicts arise. We strive to help students learn to talk about their feelings and ideas on how to solve any problems that may arise. Students really enjoy coming to Surfside because they feel valued and cared about. As teachers, we strive to build a safe learning environment and we appreciate your child using the strategies we have taught them to build lifelong friendships.

NCTD Rail Safety Month
Throughout the month of September, NCTD is actively participating in a nationwide effort to remind the public of the importance of rail safety. The NCTD Board of Directors also unanimously adopted September as Rail Safety Month to educate the public about dangerous behaviors that lead to tragic and fatal incidents on and around railroad tracks.
We hope you will partner with us to change the staggering rail incident statistics. California continues to have one of the highest numbers of trespassing and rail-related deaths in the nation. In 2022 alone, there were 256 rail incidents in the state, of which, 97 resulted in injury and 159 were fatal. These incidents could have been avoided by following rail safety practices.
You can help ensure that our children and community members know the importance of being safe near train tracks year-round by learning more #RailRules at GoNCTD.com/Safety, and by following @GoNCTD on social media.
