High Performance Learning Pathway School
Introduction by Mrs Rowley, Acting Associate Assistant Headteacher KS4
Hope you all had a lovely Bank Holiday last weekend.
Students have quickly settled back in after the break with lots of preparation for the Art, Graphics and Food exams. As chief taste tester, the food that our budding chefs produced was a delight to sample and I look forward to seeing them in the future on Masterchef!
The Carnegie reading group has begun in the Library during our Enrichment time for selected KS3 students who are reading, reviewing and discussing the shortlist. Our library has fantastic resources that is available to all students, so please ask your child about the book they are reading and the progress they are making on Bedrock. Our library is open before and after school to change books and complete quizzes.
This half term is all about High Performance Learning and our current focus is ‘Practice’. As exam season begins fully on the 15th May, we encourage our students to practise those skills, that research tells us, improve attainment.
We are also looking forward to celebrating King Charles III’s coronation in school with decorations, ceramic afternoon tea on display in student reception and a British dining room fare!
Finally, on 3rd May we welcome parents, carers and guardians to the Year 10 ‘Progress Evening’ to discuss the academic progress of your child with subject teachers. We wish everyone (another) lovely Bank Holiday weekend!
Celebrations for the King's Coronation
We LOVE our latest King's Charles III's coronation themed tea party display in our student reception zone, courtesy of our very talented and creative Year 8 and 9 Art students. The pastries and cakes look incredibly life-like and we are looking forward to celebrating the monumentous event with the rest of the nation! Our kitchen will also be putting on a special British menu to mark the special occasion, which include quiche and trifle.
Royal Visit to Wolverhampton
On Tuesday, 2nd May, Mrs Ireland and Ms Heeley took a small cadre of cadets to the Royal School Wolverhampton as part of their CCF partnership. Whilst there, the cadets were delighted to meet Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh as part of their Wolverhampton tour. The Duke has been a patron of the Royal School since 2002.
This was an epic occasion in many ways, with our cadets proud to belong to an organisation thoroughly endorsed and supported by the Duke. Our cadets: Ekiuwa, Jelli, David, Sofia, Emma and Olga, had the chance to speak to the Duke and share their enthusiasm. It was wonderful to see their evident enjoyment and pride in their school and their contingent. As you would expect, their conduct was exemplary. A lovely, once in a lifetime experience and a great way to begin Coronation week.
Colton Hills Success Story
We want to share a Colton Hills success story. Gurshinder Kaur, who painted our School of Sanctuary mural and went on to study Chemistry, with a placement at Astra Zeneca, has just secured a PhD in supramolecular chemistry at University of Oxford. Congratulations Gurshinder!
“I became a part of the Colton Hills community at a very vulnerable and tumultuous stage in my life. I had moved to the UK in 2015, from Italy, and enrolled in the school, with very little and basic knowledge of the English language, into the Year 10 class. I found the first 2 years to be very challenging and stressful because of the nature of my situation, and I would be lying if I said that I never thought of just giving up. But the support and the encouragement that the staff members gave me never failed to make me think: ‘But what if I just gave it my best shot?
To date, my best academic years have been the three years I spent at Colton Hills whilst doing my A levels. It wasn’t just because of my good grades and progress in the subjects, but also because of the interactions and activities outside of the studies, that enriched my experience at this school.
My fondest memory of Colton Hills does not reside in something I experienced in just one moment in time, it’s more like a collection of events. I don’t remember exactly who had said it first, but I recall someone referring to me as a scientist, a mathematician, and an artist. Many of the teachers from the Science and Maths department would show an interest in viewing the work I created in the Art department. This blew my mind because I had always assumed that I had to be one thing or another and that Science and Art couldn’t coexist. It taught me that I didn’t have to sacrifice anything at all, I could be both because both were part of me. I felt seen, I felt appreciated, I felt respected, and I felt valued."
