Rake a Difference Day
It's Rake a Difference Day!
We are excited to recognize our Lake Shore servant leaders and philanthropists who participated in the district's 6th annual Seasonal Cleanup. Lake Shore be-leafs in helping their community.
Mrs. McGuire, Mr. Warehall, Mrs. Kemner, Mrs. Wentworth, Ms. Fox, and Mrs. DeSandre's classes from Kennedy Middle School, armed with rakes, reminded our community why it is important to give back to homes and areas through #PositivityInAction. North Lake High School students visited neighborhoods, too.
Saint Clair Shores residents were quite pleased with their work. We heard comments like "Mom is 98 this year and she really appreciates what you have done for her over the last few years. Thank you again." and "Thank you for all your help. I’d like to have it done once or twice. I have a lot of trees I could use help right now. I am disabled." These words truly fill our hearts with such joy!
Eighth graders Nicko Pliva and Carson Hunt were eager to help. "It was fun. I got to hang out with my friends and make a difference." Nicko shared. Carson added, "This was my first time participating and it didn't feel like work at all. I'm having so much fun!" Teacher Mrs. DeSandre commented, "Getting out and doing something good for the community is enjoyable for everyone. This is the best group of kids that I've had in a long time. They will do anything asked with a smile."
Positivity Project co-founder and CEO Jeff Bryan visited Saint Clair Shores in 2022 to pitch in and see how we incorporate #PositivityInAction in our community. He applauded our administration and staff for setting a culture that develops good people. "I enjoy seeing schools modeling the P2 traits in the community. Lake Shore does such a great job and this is an example of that."
Everyone can be great because anyone can serve. You don't need a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love.
We are grateful for our Kennedy Middle School and North Lake High School students for raking. We also appreciate Bus Drivers Doug, Dave, Kelly, and Don for transporting Clippers to neighborhoods.
The Saint Clair Shores Resident's Group Facebook page gave us a lot of love with their comments.

Touchdowns for Teachers
The Detroit Lions Touchdown for Teachers program is designed to celebrate and support outstanding educators by providing them with Lions experiences and classroom grants to enhance their teaching experience while benefiting their students. This initiative aims to recognize the hard work and dedication of teachers who go above and beyond in their classrooms.
How It Works:
- Nomination Process: Students, parents, school staff and community members can nominate a teacher who has made a significant impact in their lives or in the classroom.
- Grant Selection: Nominations will be reviewed by a committee, and selected teachers will receive grants to fund innovative projects, resources, or activities that will enhance student learning.
- Celebration of Teachers: Recipients will be recognized, showcasing their contributions and the positive effects they have on their students.
Why Nominate?
- Empower Educators: Help your teacher gain the resources they need to implement creative ideas and improve their classroom environment.
- Acknowledge Dedication: Show appreciation for the time and effort your teacher invests in their students every day.
- Developing the Future: Grant-funded projects can lead to innovative teaching methods and inspire students in their learning journey.

School Closings for Inclement Weather
We wanted to talk about the topic of snow and proactively thank those who provide snow removal services.
Over the years, the first snowfall has created some beautiful wintry scenes at Lake Shore Public Schools. Snow will be here on a regular basis before we know it and you may be wondering about our procedures for school cancellations.
Decisions made to cancel school due to inclement weather are a reality as we approach the winter season. Student drivers and parent chauffeurs, please drive slow in these slick conditions and leave early so that you have plenty of time to arrive before school begins.
In extreme conditions, we make every attempt to inform our community as soon as possible of a school closing. Communication will be deployed using SchoolMessenger, the district website, Facebook, X, and local media outlets to keep you informed.
Bonus: Mt. Lake Shore, our snow day hill, is ready for use again this Winter! Here are some answers for all of the inquiring minds:
- When will the hill be ready for use? This winter as soon as there is enough snow!
- Where is the hill located? West side of Kennedy Middle School on Masonic Blvd
- How large/tall is the hill? 15’ above elevation of land of the school.

Positivity Project
P2 Calendar
Under the guiding principles of our districtwide initiative, the Positivity Project, the #PositivityInAction mindset is our top priority. Because of our goal to inspire students to build positive relationships and become their best selves, we invite you to follow this Positivity Project Calendar. Note: We have made a few changes to this calendar; All adjustments are located on our District Events Calendar.
This calendar outlines all 24 character strengths, 1 highlighted per week. Our teachers create engaging and impactful lessons — differentiated by grade-level — and share through presentations, student recognitions, classroom discussions, and building-specific displays.

People with the character strength of bravery act with mental, moral, or physical strength even when they know things are difficult or scary.
Lake Shore Public Schools honored and remembered our veterans, reservists and the family members of active duty military members by celebrating with musical performances for our community inside our schools and activities that commemorate the day.
At Masonic Heights, 2nd grade families were invited to honor and celebrate their Veterans with a few musical selections and memorized words from student leaders. They brought tears to every eye with a thoughtful slideshow presentation honoring Veterans of the Tigers family: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3KUvKw6HuY
Bristol Biondo's dad Senior Airman Anthony Biondo served in the United States Air Force for 6 years, Mrs. Courtemanche's Mom Linda Habrowski served in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman, and Jayden and Skylar Taylor's grandfather SGT Jacques Royal served for 18 years in the United State Army. These are just three heroic examples from the slideshow.
Thank you, Ms. Wischmeyer, for organizing such beautiful performances.
Our 31 5th graders from Violet Voices Choir sang today at the Veterans Day Ceremony, located at the VFW Bruce Post.
Fifteen year Army Veteran James Hermes was delighted to see students in attendance again. He explained, "My kids, Jackson, Meghan, and Hannah, were all Violet Elementary students. They never had the opportunity to perform at the VFW, but it means a lot to me to see the students here today."
All-Star Gabby Schnitz's grandma Jackie Anderson works at the VFW and so she has visited the CPL Walter F. Bruce Post #1146 and Auxiliary many times. She described the hug she received from Jackie upon arrival and the performance of Thank You, Soldiers as "very special moments."
Thank you, Mrs. Rueger-West, for your preparation and execution of this event! We also appreciate Bus Driver Dave Gill for transporting the kids to the event. Dave served for 4 years in the United States Army and was stationed in Vietnam.
Kennedy Middle School partnered with DAV to raise money, $2,767.30, for Disabled American Veterans Field of Flags. DAV Field of Flags empowers our community to set up fields of American flags, all to honor local veterans and raise critical funds to support our ill and injured heroes. Each flag in the Field of Flags honors a different hero. Behind each of the 240 flags is a unique story — a story about courage and freedom. A story about sacrifice. A story worth honoring. On the DAV website, KMS is listed as one of the top fundraising schools!
In addition, Counselor Bob Plotkowski shared a recent noteworthy experience while on the D.C. field trip. He explained, "We were at the Arlington National Cemetery at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider watching the changing of the guard. This group of Honor Flight Veterans were watching as well. After it was over Mrs. Holtz spoke with their leader and spontaneously, we set up a line of our students to thank the veterans for their services. It was one of the coolest experiences that I've been involved with D.C. trip."
Lake Shore High School regularly invites military recruiters in as guest speakers and lunch room presenters. It is a great way to learn more about these heroes.
These activities support the social and emotional wellbeing of all stakeholders while honoring #VeteransDay.

People with the character strength of gratitude are aware of and thankful for good that happen.
Showing gratitude is one of the simplest yet most powerful things humans can do for each other.
Starting November 1st and lasting until November 22nd, we invited all stakeholders in our community to write a brief letter to one person who has made a difference in your life at Lake Shore Public Schools and beyond.
Template: https://www.lakeshoreschools.org/.../pages/GetFile.ashx...
At the end of November, we will gather all of these letters and deliver to their recipients.
Kaylee Rose from Lake Shore High School selected her then Kindergarten and Second Grade Teacher Ms. Wilson from Rodgers Elementary. In her letter she wrote: "There was never a moment that I didn't like you as my teacher. As I'm getting older, I am realizing how much your kind heart and patient teaching helped me grow as a person. Because of you, I know that it's okay to be myself." Kaylee hopes that her little sisters Lillian and Kelsea will be lucky enough to have Ms. Wilson as their teacher, too. What a profound impact Ms. Wilson had on this current 9th grader.
Kolton Dafoe from Rodgers Elementary selected Ms. Domagalski. Upon visiting her classroom to show her his gratitude letter, both Kolton and Ms. D felt immediate excitement. It is clear that they have a close bond. Ms. Domagalski explained, "Kolton is the sweetest kid. I've had the entire Dafoe Family in my 6 years of teaching at Lake Shore. Dawson (4th), Kolton (2nd), and Jackson (1st) are all awesome!" She enjoys hanging these letters in her room as a proud display of love and her good fortune. She continued, "The letters make me feel good about being a teacher and remind me that I am making a difference."
Looking forward, we are excited to celebrate GRATITUDE (11/25-29) and KINDNESS (12/2-6).

OK2SAY Student Safety Program
See something? Say something.
OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at school students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
Anyone can report tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at students, school employees, or schools. Tips can be submitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
While continually evolving and reviewed annually, on this Safety and Security webpage you will find a list of recent and current safety measures implemented by Lake Shore Public Schools to provide the safest environment for our students and staff.
Inspiration
Safety Patrol
Safety starts with our students, but what is the job of our Safety Patrol?
Safety Patrol members from our elementary schools contribute to the 654,000 students nationwide who are helping keep other students safe on their way to and from school. Our Patrollers direct peers, teaching them about traffic safety, protect students from hazards of crossing roads, and serve as role models, helping inside classrooms or hallways, too!
Safety Patrol member Maia Snodgrass at Masonic Heights Elementary loves talking with peers, being their first smile of the day at school, and of course, ensuring safety. She explained, "My job is to help pass back papers and prepare the materials for the day in Art."
Sara Phillips puts a smile on our face every morning with her friendly wave and concern for kids. Sara is employed through the City of SCS to serve as a Crossing Guard for Violet Elementary. She's served at this post for 1.5 years. She said, "I enjoy when elementary kids roll down their window to say good morning. It makes my day." This 77-year-old used to be a teacher and even in her retirement she felt the need to continue to serve kids. "I begin at 7:30am, but will not leave Violet Street until the final student crosses. I know who the stragglers are and I want to ensure that they are able to cross this busy street safety, too."
Thank you to our Safety Patrol teams for watching over us this year!
Creating a Better World
We are inspired by this next generation's efforts to build a future where people and nature thrive. How does Lake Shore put in the work to create a better world on World Kindness Day today and everyday?
Mrs. Boren, Ms. D'Ambrosio, and Ms. Hoover's Kindergarten classes at Masonic Heights Elementary raised money to help protect the future of nature. Their symbolic Manatee named Cookie, Red-Eyed Tree Frog named Unicorn, and a Panda Bear called Coco are "class pets," secured by donations from the PTO to support the World Wildlife Fund and protect these animals and their habitats. Students enjoyed keeping track of their monetary donations through a graph, meeting their goal, and hugging their stuffed, mail-ordered friend.
These animals will spend their weekends with a student. Upon their return to school on Monday, presentations will be shared about those Saturday and Sunday adventures which may include new people he meets, places he travels, and things he does.
What a great way to meet comprehension, collaboration, and presentation of knowledge and ideas benchmarks!
Bonus: Mrs. Fain's MiCI students help make the world a better place by running a weekly recycling of aluminum, plastic, and fiber at Lake Shore High School.
Animals, nature, and the environment are all important in our district. Check out the many Lake Shore schools that made Macomb County's Green School list: https://www.facebook.com/myLSPS/posts/pfbid02DLeoKKYhGdiqLWNDnSNmir4DayW7PhGgntLVKN4FqiTp1HVCKYdZUgt4ogT5ihjfl
Innovation
Art
To practice any art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow.
One year ago a kiln was installed inside Mrs. Kamis' Art room at Lake Shore High School. A generous grant from The Lake Shore Foundation is the reason why her classes are able to create pottery project.
As an anticipatory set and to give background on the lesson, high school students learned about famous artist Maria Martinez who introduced the unique Pueblo style of ceramic art. Mrs. Kamis' also read Clay: The History and Evolution of Humankind's Relationship with Earth's Most Primal Element to her class as a way to give them context and background knowledge.
Students were excited to create their own vase from scratch. They explored clay techniques and designed a vase with the freedom to be creative.
In Mrs. Rhadigan's Art special at Masonic Heights Elementary, Mrs. Peacock's 3rd graders were completing a lesson on the Northern Lights using oil pastels!
The northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, are a natural light display in the night sky that occurs when charged particles from the sun interact with Earth's atmosphere. In short, the sky becomes a beautiful color explosion.
Save the Date: We are excited to announce that our District K-12 Art Show is scheduled for Thursday, April 24th from 6-7:30pm inside Lake Shore High School's Hub.
Learning Centers
In Mrs. Post's classroom at Rodgers Elementary, 1st graders are working on Core Knowledge Language Arts curriculum.
Elementary teachers continue to complete Amplify CKLA training in August. Amplify CKLA is based on research showing that closing the background knowledge gap is necessary for closing the reading gap and ensuring equity for all students. To that end, Amplify CKLA teaches literacy through the lens of cross-curricular domains in science, history, literature, and culture. It was developed in response to research that shows the critical impact of background knowledge on reading comprehension and college- and career-readiness.
Learning centers are used to support classroom instruction and promote critical thinking. Students showed improvement in their engagement in learning center activities and quality of work as they rotated through the following five stations: work on writing, listen to read, read with the teacher, teach to a buddy, and word work.
The lesson focused on reading The Bug Glass with the purpose of answering oral and written literal and evaluative questions about the story. They learned that bug glass is known as magnifying glass, a tool used to make smaller things look larger so they are easier to see.
We enjoyed watching students reread the story in their Readers together and work together to demonstrate understanding of new vocabular.
Thanksgiving Parade
Happy pre-Thanksgiving, Shorian Nation, a perfect time to share our own Thanksgiving parade!
Our 3rd grade team, consisting of 9 classrooms districtwide, designed and built their own miniature floats for a Thanksgiving Day Parade. First, they studied different types of floats. Next, they came up with four possible parade themes. After, they narrowed their choices, completed an organizer to share their ideas, and drew and built their prototype floats using household supplies.
Students from Violet Elementary even had the opportunity to visit the Parade Company in Detroit which helped to inspire their float designs. Kaden Pomerson plays on the Little Saints Hockey team which influenced his decision to create a hockey rink float. Carissa Hachey dreams of visiting Paris one day so she took us there with her float. She even included the Eiffel Tower. Sophie Korby's turkey-themed float has us all excited for Thanksgiving dinner. Vincent Harrison claims he is the biggest Lions fan ever so that float was fitting for his interests. Jace Britton's favorite game is Sonic the Hedgehog so he transported us into the video game series.
We hope you enjoyed all the creative floats from Masonic Heights Elementary, Rodgers Elementary, and Violet Elementary. Spending time with family and friends while being grateful for these moments is what this holiday is all about.
Celebration
School Psychologists Week
School psychologists are crucial in supporting students by addressing learning and behavioral challenges. Whether through group or one-on-one counseling or providing students with the tools needed to build social skills, their contributions are essential to the educational process.
This week, and every week, we are grateful for our incredible team of school psychologists, Sarah Bowe at the elementary level and Andrew Campbell at the secondary level, who work tirelessly to uplift and customize resources to meet students' needs.
Mrs. Bowe earned a Bachelor's degree from Western Michigan with a double major (psychology and sociology) and Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, as well as School and Community Psychology. She has been a school psychologist for 24 years. She is married and has two children (ages 24 and 22 years) and two dogs. She loves to travel, read, go to theater/musicals and spend time with family and friends.
Mr. Campbell is a transplant from Hickory, North Carolina. He moved to Detroit in 2013 and began his career in School Psychology in 2018. He enjoys the service element and working with youth the most.
Mrs. Bowe works at the three elementary schools and the early childhood program at North Lake while Mr. Campbell serves Lake Shore High School, North Lake High School, and Kennedy Middle School. They collaborate with staff to create support and educational plans for at-risk and Special Education students. They also evaluate students who may have a suspected disability to determine if additional interventions and specialized instruction are needed to support that student.
There are many rewarding aspects of their career. Sarah explained, "The most rewarding part of my job is working with the students. I enjoy building relationships and developing educational plans to support students who may be struggling. I also enjoy sharing ideas I have learned through my education and experience, and collaborating with staff and parents to utilize those strategies."
Most recent, Mr. Campbell helped a 10th grader get back on track toward graduation. He said, "When I met with the student, he had a reduced schedule because he wasn't finding success in his general education classes. After many meetings, evaluations, testing, and interviews, the student has set and met some incredible goals and is making progress."
Interestingly, Mrs. Bowe completed her internship in Lake Shore while she was in graduate school (20+ years ago). She said, "I feel like I have returned home! I feel so blessed to be part of the Lake Shore community and working with such amazing staff and families."
Lake Shore has comprehensive teams that are skilled and extensive. Mr. Campbell complimented, "The district has paid careful attention to the educational backgrounds and skillsets of their people and placed each of us appropriately around the district. Administrators are often receiving special education training and can be seen at our meetings. We are one cohesive unit and I feel so grateful to be a part of it."
Thank you, LSPS team, for everything you do!
Substitute Appreciation Day
It is Substitute Appreciation Day and we certainly appreciate our subs.
We count on our substitute teachers, the people who teach a class when our regular teachers are unavailable.
Substitute teachers maintain classroom discipline and carry on the classroom procedures so that instruction isn't interrupted. Lake Shore subs are kind, caring people who adapt to any situation and are always up for a challenge.
We are so lucky to have substitutes like district sub Amanda Hubbard who loves to serve where she's needed. She explained, "I've been subbing with Lake Shore for 5 years and thoroughly enjoy the connection with kids and being of service to staff." She has served in a variety of long-term sub positions, but she struggled to decide on her favorite memory. She loves it all. The best part of her day-to-day job is getting hugs and hellos from former students!
Shannon Gillis subs regularly at Lake Shore High School. She decided to serve in this role for the past 2 years because she wanted to be present for and with her own kids, Donovan and Addison. She said, "I love all kids at Lake Shore and getting to know them is so much fun." She also serves as a hall monitor at the building.
We also appreciate Jeanenne Cappo, Employee Services Coordinator, for securing our classroom substitutes. She started at Lake Shore Public Schools in 1986 and has been dedicated to her roles and has the best interest of the district in mind.

Athletics
Athletics Website
We have built an online home for our athletic department. Our goal is to bring our athletic programs to life by sharing schedules, scores, and social media while ensuring our athletes get the promotion they deserve. Visit the Shorian Sports website for 24/7/365 access to the information you have always wanted and follow along with our sports action.
We have partnered with Kroger to help fund our athletics. Please read this letter from our Athletic Coordinator Rich Bowers.
We believe a balance of academics and athletics creates a well-rounded student. Students who participate in sports not only gain the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle, they also learn lessons about sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, cooperation, respect, and knowing how to win and lose.
Save the Date: Winter headshot photos for all LSHS athletes except Varsity Boys' Hockey are scheduled for Wednesday, December 4th during all lunches inside the Hub.
