The Southview Scoop
September 2023

Welcome to Southview 2023 - 2024!
The Southview School community prides itself on the accomplishments of the students it serves. It is through the celebration of each individual student’s self-determination in meeting their personal goals that our mission to assist students to become independent, responsible, productive citizens and to reach their personal potential is achieved.
It is the belief of SSD, that the participation of the entire educational team is crucial. Staff members, families, and students are involved in making decisions that impact students. Collaboration strengthens the structure of the school and increases the quality of instruction.
Southview Vision
We prepare students for their post-school outcomes by creating productive members of their community.
Southview Mission:
The Southview Learning Community provides a safe learning environment in which all students are treated with dignity and respect. Through high quality research and data based interventions; we ensure individualized academic improvement and social-communication development for students age K-21 in order to attain successful post-school outcomes.

Cougars ROAR!
Our school motto is ROAR- Respect Others Accept Responsibility. Our PBIS programming assists us in establishing and maintaining a school climate where the social culture and behavioral supports reinforces an effective learning environment for all students. ROAR is a fun and easy way for our students to remember that we should all be respectful and responsible.

Inside the Classroom
Welcome to the Service Learning Center
The Service Learning Center is Southview's career skills training classroom. Kristen Schaffer, the SLC's teacher, helps students develop pre-employment skills such as focus, stamina, communication, and appropriate workplace behaviors. Currently, SLC students are working on a bulk mail order for a local organization and marketing materials for non-profits. Local businesses can send jobs to Southview for students to complete by contacting Kristen at 989.8922 or kschaffer@ssdmo.org.
Students in the SLC also work the Cougar Coffee Den. The Den sells beverages and snacks to staff during the day. The Den provides students with the opportunity to work on retail and food industry skills such as costumer service, food handling, and inventory.

Simply put, transition is change — movement from one situation to another. For students with disabilities, one of the most significant transitions in life is moving from high school into the adult world. By the minimum age of 16, federal law mandates that the IEP for every student address post-secondary transition needs.
