A Message from your School Leaders
Dear Wentworth Families,
How is it already December?! Our busy weeks are just flying by, and these past few days have made it clear that winter is upon us! Here are a couple of winter weather reminders so everyone knows what to expect for a safe and healthy season.
First, a reminder that the first three times school is canceled due to inclement weather will be traditional "snow days." That means there is no school, no remote school, no blizzard pack, no attendance check-in, and so on - school is just closed and there will be plenty of time to focus on building snow forts, having hot chocolate, playing games, clearing walkways, and being cozy! After three traditional snow days, should there be further cancellations, Scarborough Public Schools will have "remote" learning days. This will look different K-5 and 6-12. K-5 students do not routinely bring home their devices, need more support in accessing technology, have childcare considerations, and more. Therefore, stay tuned for a "Snow Day Packet" or "Blizzard Bag" that will be coming home in the weeks ahead. This will be a paper packet of review work that students can accomplish with a high degree of independence. More information coming soon. To stay up to date on all communications, including cancellations and delays, click here to access the Scarborough Schools PowerSchool Parent Sign In page to update your contact information including, phone numbers, email addresses, street addresses and emergency contact information.
The second reminder is about winter apparel for Wentworth students. Recesses will be held outdoors daily, weather permitting. We will not hold recess outdoors if it is too wet or too cold. We monitor conditions closely and building/teacher leaders determine inside or outside recess.
When preparing your child for school each day, keep in mind that coats, hats, mittens, snow pants, and boots are still very appropriate for this age group. Because the safety of our students is our first concern, students who are not wearing proper gear for winter safety will be sent inside and may miss outdoor recess. A student outdoors in 20 degree weather without a jacket, for example, is a potential safety issue. This is a bit different from a student who forgets (or refuses) to wear gloves when it is 34 degrees. They will be encouraged to borrow some of our loaner gloves, put their hands in their pockets, or have the natural consequence of cold hands. We have some items to borrow, and will also gladly accept additional donations of items in good condition that your child has outgrown. We spend time teaching students about the guidelines for what to wear at different temperatures, and we could use your support in reinforcing the expectation that recess is more fun when you are warm and in the right gear!
Like the dress code, what your child wears to school and for outdoor play is a parent responsibility, and we seek to partner with you. Having a conversation with your child about the expectations, which you can review by clicking the link to the Winter Recess Outerwear Guidelines, and ensuring they have the proper gear helps us to reinforce "please wear all that you have" and eliminates unnecessary back and forth when students know their parents and teachers are on the same page. The image below is the poster we use in each hallway to indicate the guidelines based on the daily weather. If your family would benefit from assistance in acquiring appropriate winter gear please contact our school nurses at 730-4610.
Respectfully,
Kelli Crosby ~ Principal
Brem Stoner ~ Asst. Principal

Wentworth School Yearbook Cover Contest
Calling all Wentworth Students!
You are invited to design a cover for the Wentworth School 2023-2024 Yearbook!
Entries for the contest must follow these guidelines:
- Use 8 1⁄2 x 11-inch white paper.
- Portrait layout (like the image to the right.)
- Include only your original artwork- no stickers, clip art, or images that are not your own creation.
- Bright and colorful! Use crayon, marker, paint, or pastels. You can create a digital design if you wish. Stand back from it and be sure your designs and letters show up boldly!
- Fill in the page- Leave little to no blank space on the page. The bigger the design, the better!
- Your cover design must include Wentworth School and 2023-2024 in a clear, easy to see manner. Fireworks would match the "theme" the Yearbook Club selected.
- Make sure all spelling is correct.
Do NOT write your name or teacher's name on the front or on the back - see this attached slip to complete the bottom portion with your submission. Paper copies of this form are available in the office or ask your teacher.
We are looking forward to seeing your creations!
