June 15, 2023
Dear PV Families,
I hope you are enjoying the first week of summer break. Last Friday night, June 9, we had the pleasure of celebrating the graduation of 442 PVHS students! It was a wonderful ceremony, and we were fortunate that the steady rain held off until after the very last name was called. Below, please find a collection of pictures capturing some of the great moments of this memorable night. A heartfelt congratulations to all of our 2023 Viking graduates! You will also see a photo from the graduation ceremony of North MontCo Technical Career Center on May 31. The students in the photo graduated from the Protective Services program and Perkiomen Valley High School.
I would like to provide you with some general information as we move through the process of concluding the 2022-23 school year and preparing for the 2023-24 school year. Final student report cards will be accessible next week on Thursday, June 22, starting at noon via ParentVUE.
Additionally, I wanted to provide you with some important updates on various topics, including transportation, changes to school handbooks, and other matters of interest.
1. Transportation - On Monday, June 12, our Board of School Directors approved providing bus transportation for all students, K-12, who reside in Cranberry Estates beginning in the 2023-24 school year. Stay tuned for additional information in advance of the start of the school year.
2. Student Handbooks - The handbooks were updated in the areas of cell phones (elementary and middle), attendance (all levels) and discipline consequences (middle level).
- Cell phones will not be permitted to be in use during the school day at the elementary and middle levels, unless they are necessary for medical purposes. They are expected to be stored in a student's backpack or locker. In the event smart watches are deemed disruptive to instruction, teachers will ask that students put them away in a bookbag, cubby or locker.
- Attendance requirements and supports have been reworded. In Pennsylvania, attendance at school is compulsory. The District recognizes that some students have difficulty attending school on a regular basis for a variety of reasons. There is updated language about when a note from a doctor is required as well as and when conversations with the school may be appropriate and helpful. Our efforts are to partner with you when students are challenged to attend school.
- Discipline Code in the middle school handbook has been updated to articulate more clearly the consequence that will be assigned for a specific infraction. The goal is to bring clarity to infractions and consequences for middle school students and parents.
In other matters of interest, I would like to thank you those of you who completed the school police officers survey shared earlier this spring. The data will serve as a baseline and assist the District in knowing where our parent and staff communities are in their thinking about school police officers. The survey is now closed. Administration anticipates distributing the survey on an annual basis and using the feedback to guide appropriate improvements.
Situating armed school police officers at all schools over the course of next year is a major step for the school district. We look forward to the enhanced safety and security these individuals will provide our school communities as well as the relationships they will build with students. In preparation of school police officers in our schools, the District has focused intently on developing policies that will guide the work of the officers. While the school police officers will carry a firearm, no others on site or visiting any of our schools are permitted to do so. This language is included in Policy 218.1 Weapons, and Policy 904 Public Attendance at School Events. In the event you have any questions about school police officers or the policies guiding any aspect of their work, feel free to contact Mr. Dean Miller, Chief of Police, dmiller@pvsd.org, or me, brussell@pvsd.org.
Thank you for a wonderful school year! It was great to have parents on site at all of our schools more frequently this year and we look forward to more of the same in 2023-24.
Have a safe and enjoyable summer!
Sincerely,
Dr. Barbara A. Russell
