Health & Safety
Masks Required on Buses and Inside Schools
State officials have given school districts the responsibility to determine COVID-19 mitigation strategies at the local level this school year. The 2021-22 COVID-19 Operational Plan for Families, Students and Visitors to Schools that was unanimously approved by our School Board on August 26 requires all students, staff and visitors in all District 196 buildings to wear a face mask indoors when the local transmission level is “substantial” or “high” as measured by the CDC transmission matrix. Currently, the transmission level in Dakota County is high, meaning face masks will be required in our schools to start the year, just as they are required to enter a growing number of businesses, government buildings and on all public transportation and airline flights.
Your partnership is critical to the success of our students. We expect students, staff and visitors to comply with the mask requirement, as outlined in Administrative Regulation 708.7, COVID-19 Masks, until the COVID-19 spread in Dakota County drops to the “moderate” level of transmission. Masks help reduce spread and give us the best opportunity to provide consistent in-person education all year. Just like last year, students will have opportunities for mask breaks during the day, such as at lunch or while outside. If parents and guardians are concerned about their child’s ability to safely wear a mask, they should refer back to Administrative Regulation 708.7 COVID-19 Masks.
Our district is committed to doing all we can to ensure students can continue learning in person this school year. This includes HEPA filters in all learning spaces, social distancing, recommending COVID-19 vaccinations for those who are eligible to receive them and requiring masks when the local transmission level is substantial or high.
Review and Update Emergency Information
If you haven’t already done so, please update your family’s information on record with the district by completing the online review in your Infinite Campus Parent portal account. This is the one time each year the district asks parents to complete the review to ensure schools have up-to-date contact information, emergency contacts, student health records and more. It is important for schools to have current information in order to be notified in case of emergency, changes in the school schedule and to receive regular communication from the schools and district.
All District 196 parents and guardians are encouraged to have an Infinite Campus Parent account of their own to stay involved in their child’s education, and to access end-of-term report cards, transcripts, attendance and other important information. Parents who do not have their own Infinite Campus Parent account can request an activation key from the office at their child’s school. For information on setting up an Infinite Campus Parent account and completing the online review, visit the Family Resources page on our district website.
We look forward to partnering with you to make 2021-22 a safe, fun and productive school year for all of our students and families.

SPORTS SCOREBOARD
Lightning Boys Hockey at Eagan, Sat., Jan. 22
The Lightning Boys came to play at Eagan taking it to the Wildcats in all three zones en route to a 4-0 victory on Saturday. From the puck drop the Lightning were on their toes with an aggressive forecheck that smothered the Wildcats, leading to a seven to one shot advantage five minutes into the game. The Lightning had several “grade A” chances including a Gabe Tritschler stretch pass that sprang Tyler Cords for a breakaway but were unable to solve Eagan’s goalie in the opening frame. The Lightning posted a twelve to six advantage in shots on goal in a fast moving strong period.
The Lightning continued to push aggressively at the start of the second, keeping the Wildcats on their heels as the visiting team failed to register a shot for the first six minutes. Tanner Kronberg opened the scoring seven minutes in on a nice shot from the left dot. Assists went to Tyler Cords and Ryan Moline. Jordan Brothers scored just 30 second later on rebound off a point shot by Logan Opgrand. Assists went to John Kisch and Brayden Kaldenbach. The Lightning outshot the Wildcats 14 to five during the period and were also strong on the penalty kill.
A Lightning penalty at the start of the third gave Eagan some life but Eastview’s penalty kill was strong and the Wildcats took a five minute major. Eastview was unable to score on the ensuing four minutes of power play time and the Wildcats had another power play but the Lightning penalty kill was once again up to the task. Eastview net-minder Jay Svaren stood tall throughout the period including a 2-0 opportunity for Eagan. That sequence was followed by the second goal of the game for Brothers on a rocket past the Eagan goalie. Assists went to Tritschler and Kisch. Kronberg got into the action with his own second goal on a spinning rebound that went in just off the right post. Assists went to Kaldenbach and Tritschler.
The Lightning played solid offensively and defensively with a strong penalty kill and limited Eagan’s chances dominating the shot total 35-14. Svaren was strong between the pipes and offensively it was nice to see some even strength goals. The victory was also critical with implications for section seeding as well as the South Suburban Conference standings.
The Lightning next take on the Farmington Tigers, Tuesday evening at 7pm at the Apple Valley Sports Arena. Superfans needed to keep the Lightning rolling!
1/20: The Eastview Boys Varsity Hockey team got back on the winning track on Thursday night with a 4-1 win over Burnsville. Eastview controlled play for most of the game outshooting the Blaze 44-11. The Burnsville goalie made a couple early point blank stops on Billie Downs in the first period to keep scoring down. Jordan Brothers scored in the first period with assists to Zach Wooten and John Kisch. Then with 17 seconds left in the first period, Tanner Kronberg scored on a nice deflection from Charlie Ortman and Nick Karam.
Only one goal was scored in the 2nd period with Ortman netting a powerplay goal on a pass from Kisch and Gabe Tritschler. Ortman wrapped up the scoring with his 2nd goal of the game in the 3rd period with an empty net goal assisted by Brothers and goalie Jay Svaren. Just before the final goal, goalie Svaren nearly scored a goal of his own with a shot from his own crease the length of the ice toward the Blaze net!
The win was an important section win for seeding at end of season. Eastview plays at Eagan on Saturday for another conference and section matchup.
Boys Hockey v. Park Cottage Grove, Tuesday, January 18
The Lightning Boys Hockey team battled back to tie Park Cottage Grove on Tuesday before losing 4-2 at Hayes Park Arena.
The Lightning came out strong and carried the play early but it was Cottage Gove who scored first on a hard low shot halfway through the opening frame. The Lightning bested the shot total at 10-7 and committed the lone penalty toward the end of the first with the man-advantage carrying over to the second period. That penalty would prove costly as Park scored less than a minute in and gained momentum with a 2-0 lead. The Lightning drew a penalty and Charlie Ortman scored about five minutes into the period on a laser that rattled off the post and in. The lone assist went to Jordan Larkee. Eastview scored again on the power play when Zach Wooten found himself all alone on the backdoor off of a rebound. Ortman and John Kisch assisted on the goal and the period ended 2-2 with Eastview leading the shot total 22-18.
The third period began with the same strong push by Eastview but Park’s goalie made several pivotal saves. Unfortunately, Park scored an even strength goal midway through the period when the puck took a fluky bounce off of a face-off. Just a minute and a half later, the visitors notched another goal on a power play, taking a 4-2 lead with five minutes left. Despite a strong effort to tie the game, the Lightning were unable to score again for a 4-2 loss. For the game, Eastview outshot the visitors 30-23 but could only muster two goals on the power play while yielding two power play goals and two even strength goals.
The Lightning have a busy South Suburban Conference stretch upcoming with games at Burnsville and Eagan on Thursday and Saturday, and a home game against Farmington on Tuesday. Calling all Superfans to support your Eastview Lightning as they hit the second half of the season!
1/22/22: Eastview High School Girls Varsity Hockey beat Eagan High School 5-2
The Lightning renewed its long-time and often testy rivalry with the Wildcats, this time, at Eagan Ice Arena. The game was a tense affair, with Eagan racking up 21 penalty minutes. Eastview led most of the way and headed home with a 5-3 win. Senior Captains Avery Chesek and Nora Stepan recorded 4 and 3 points respectively and senior Assistant Captain Dani Farrington posted her first 2-goal game.
At 6:22 of the first, junior Jessica Wilhelm fed Chesek behind the Wildcats’ goal. Chesek wheeled to the top of the right circle and fired the puck to the net. Sophomore Erin Hayward picked up the rebound and put it by the goalie for a 1-0 lead. Eagan tied the score less than a minute later, but the Lightning took the lead for good before the end of the period. At 15:18, Stepan hit Hayward moving through center ice. Hayward found Farrington in the slot and she ripped it five-hole for a 2-1 lead. With less than 10 seconds in the period, Chesek pulled an offensive zone draw back to Stepan at the point. Stepan targeted a laser toward the net that Wilhelm deflected past the helpless goalie. After one, it was 3-1 and the shots were 17-9.
There was no scoring in the second. The Lightning killed two penalties, senior Assistant Captain Angie Lombardi was strong in net, and Eastview kept the Wildcats at bay. After two, the shots were 26-15.
The Lightning worked a power play less than 2 minutes into the third. With the player advantage, Chesek and Stepan moved the puck back and forth, wing to point, before Chesek carried it from wing to slot. As she moved through the zone, Chesek left a drop pass for Stepan who ripped a shot toward the Eagan goal. Chesek got her stick on the puck as she crashed the net and deflected it passed the net minder to make it 4-1. Eagan cut the lead to 4-2, but Farrington struck again with her second of the game to make it 5-2, assist to Chesek. Eagan added a goal late to make the final 5-3. The shots were 32-21.
The win moved Eastview to 11-7-1 and 10-4 in the SSC.
It’s a busy week ahead for the Lightning as they host Farmington on Thursday at 7:00, #1 (A) Warroad on Friday at 2:30 (Hayes Arena), and Prior Lake at 2:00 on Saturday. Saturday is Senior Night and we will celebrate our seven seniors, Betsy Bjerke, Mackenzie Henning, Assistant Captains Katherene DeBoom, Dani Farrington and Angie Lombardi, and Captains Avery Chesek and Nora Stepan. Get to AVSA early to salute and cheer on these ladies who have given so much to EVGH! Let’s Go!! Go Lightning!! #OurTime
1/20/22: Eastview High School Girls Varsity Hockey beat Shakopee High School 4-3
The Lightning visited Shakopee for the first time since 2020 and skated away with a 4-3 conference victory. Senior Captain Avery Chesek and sophomore Erin Hayward led the way with 4 points apiece.
Eastview started the scoring at 12:53 of the first. Chesek gathered the puck deep in the Sabers’ zone and fed senior Captain Nora Stepan at the point. Stepan launched a missile to the net and Hayward tipped it by the goalie at the edge of the crease. Shakopee knotted the score at 1 just before the first period horn. Shots on goal were 6-12, per the SIA shot counter who is notoriously stingy with the visitor’s shot totals.
Eastview took the lead for good at :26 of the second. Chesek netted her first of the night with assists to Hayward and 9th grader Sari Cords. The score stood 2-1 going to the third. Shots were 15-23.
Eastview tallied twice more to make the score 4-1. At :41 seconds in the third, Chesek and Cords combined to get the puck to the front of the net where Hayward potted it past the prone goalie for a 3-1 lead. Mid-way through the third, Chesek found the back of the net again with assists to Hayward and junior Meghan Keating. Shakopee pressured late, scoring two in the waning minutes, but it was not enough for the Sabers. The final was 4-3 and the shots were 20-35.
The win moved Eastview’s record to 10-7-1 and 9-4 in the South Suburban Conference. Let’s Go!! Go Lightning!! #OurTime

Halfway through the first, Caleb Nelson was next on the board when he walked it in through the slot and scored to put Eastview in a 2 – 0 lead. Nelson was assisted by linemate Billy Downs. Eastview was scored on during their first penalty kill to bring it to 2-1 in the first period. The Wolfpack evened it up against the Lightning at the end of the period and ended the second period with a score of 2-2. Both teams had 5 shots on goal with each goalie racking 3 saves in the first.

At the end of the second, the Lightning were in the lead again 3 -2. Shots on goal at the end of the second were 13 each.
Just 2:24 into the third period, Park tied it up again after an icing call brought the puck back in the offensive zone. After strong goal tending by both Park Cottage Grove and Eastview, the Lightning took the lead again when Kalthoff scored a short-handed goal. Woehler had his second assist of the night and helped put Eastview ahead 4 – 3. The Wolfpack pulled their goalie, and Eastview quickly took advantage of the open net. CLUB SPORTS
NEW: HIGH SCHOOL RUGBY
Rugby registration is open for our Girls and Boys high school teams.
Our Varsity Boys are looking to defend their State Championship, and are ranked 31st in the Nation in pre-season rankings. Our Varsity Girls program is up and coming, and we expect to challenge at the top in Minnesota this year in building up to our 2023 Scotland Tour.
WE NEED PLAYERS. No experience is necessary. We have many holes to fill and first-year players will get significant playing/starting time. In rugby, everybody plays, everybody carries the ball, and everybody tackles. Rugby suits all body shapes and sizes, and teaches explosiveness, decision-making, and agility. Rugby is the only spring sport that teaches safe and highly effective tackling to improve HS football player performance and to help avoid injury. We are an ISD 196 club sport, meaning Varsity players may earn their letter.
Practice begins on March 6th and the season runs through the end of the school year. More information, including registration links, may be found at https://www.eaasports.org/rugby.

On January 18, Eastview Blue, representing the State of Minnesota, defeated Visitation in a strong round. Sophomore Raavi Singh was named “Best Attorney” and Junior Ian Machalek was named “Best Witness,” giving the (mock) Defendant a hefty prison term for swindling donor contributions from the dog rescue charity at the center of this year’s case. On the Defense side, Eastview White managed to keep “Best Witness” and Defendant Junior Neha Ravella out of (mock) prison, defeating the team from Totino-Grace High School. Sophomore Lily Boyd was named “Best Attorney” for that trial.
Both cases were tried before 3-judge panels, with attorneys from each school presenting opening statements, closing arguments and objections. 3 witnesses from each side testify about the facts of the case and are cross examined by the other team.
The teams will be back in the virtual courtroom next Tuesday night for Round 3.
