The Pulse of the Pride

June 2, 2023
Lyme School Friends,
It is hard to believe that we have arrived at June!
We have a lot happening as we conclude our year together.
We hope you will participate in bike/walk to school on June 7th! Details in the PTO section below.
We will be celebrating as a school to close the year with Field Days on June 14th and 15th.
Our 8th graders will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 14th. Our celebration and recognition will take place at 5PM in the gymnasium at school.
Reminder that our last day of school is Thursday, June 15th with a 2PM dismissal. Our 7th graders will be ringing the bell to conclude the year, so please arrive around 1:30 if you would like to see this tradition.
Please help remind community members that we'd prefer dogs are not present on campus during school hours, especially at recess. A reminder to owners to clean up after their dogs when strolling through the playground after hours is also greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for spreading the word!
Campus has definitely become more active with the nice weather! Check out our new friends in the video below close by to our gaga ball pit.
The next newsletter will hit your inbox on June 16th where we should be able to provide some updates on the 23-24 school year.
As always, please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions.
Regards,
John P. D'Entremont, Principal

Summer Program Update
Last Friday we sent letters to parents/guardians of students who qualified for the Title 1 Summer Program. We do ask that you return those forms to the front office. If you do not want your child to participate, we can offer that spot to another student. Also, if anyone wants their child/children to attend summer programming, but did not receive a formal letter, please contact me at your convenience (gtomlinson@lymeschool.org, 603-795-2125 ext. 106).
We will be holding a Title 1 Summer Programming information night next Thursday June 8th, at 5pm in the multi-purpose room at the school. We will explain the requirements to be eligible for Title 1 funds, how we determined what formal assessments to use, why some students qualified even if not recommended by the classroom teacher and answer any questions you may have.
Warmly, Geoff

Thank you for your understanding.

- Carry a water bottle.
- Drink water at lunch.
- Make use of our water bottle filling stations.
Please remember if your child is experiencing symptoms, please test for COVID. If a person is not positive but has any symptoms, we kindly request a mask.

Happy June, Lyme Families!
I wanted to share some podcasts that I have referred to parents the last few years. These podcasts target parenting challenges, child and adolescent anxiety, big feelings, teen mental health, and our own wellness as caregivers. Caregiving/parenting is a tough job! There are lots of resources out there, it can be overwhelming to sift through them so here are some you might want to check out!
Parenting isn't easy, and it's normal to worry. Lynn Lyons, therapist for over 30 years, author, and speaker is one of the world's experts on helping parents, kids, and teens manage anxiety. She talks with co-host and sister-in-law Robin Hutson in a weekly podcast full of laughs, and practical advice without the psychobabble. At the beginning of the pandemic, Lynn and Robin started the Flusterclux podcast - talking about anxiety and worry, their love for Mr. Rogers, and the crazy things the mental health field gets WRONG about anxiety. Each episode is filled with practical advice for parents how to better manage their worry and big feelings like anger and sadness so that they are modeling healthy emotional awareness. Lynn answers listener questions and gives parents concrete strategies for developing the traits that are their kids' best defenses against anxiety and depression later in life: flexibility, resilience, autonomy, and problem solving. Free at Spotify, apple podcasts, or wherever you consume podcasts.
Clinical psychologist and mom of three Becky Kennedy, Ph.D. (aka Dr. Becky) is out with a weekly podcast to give expert tips to parents everywhere. Good Inside, available on Apple and Spotify, dives into questions about topics like forming stronger relationships with kids, handling bedtime battles, and helping your children grow—all in under 30 minutes.
Every week co-hosts Kaanji Irby and Tara Campbell cover topics such as motherhood, race, and pop culture on a podcast that's more important now than ever: Motherhood in Black & White. Exploring every person's unique parenthood journey, diversity is the name of the game with this podcast—plus it hones in on raising race-conscious children. Free at Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, and other places.
WOW in the World! “Technically, it's designed to teach kids, but it's perfect for adults with a zest for learning weird stuff like where stinkbugs come from," says Shayna Ferm, co-author of Parentally Incorrect. Free at Apple Podcasts, Audible, Spotify, Stitcher, and Tinkercast.
Lisa Damour, Ph.D., a New York Times Adolescence columnist and author of bestsellers Untangled and Under Pressure, and Reena Nina, a world-class journalist, co-host the podcast Ask Lisa: The Psychology of Parenting, all about family mental health—and your top parenting questions. Subscribe for free on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and iHeart Radio.
Two recent episodes that were recommended that I found very insightful and interesting were from the Ezra Klein Show - Teen Mental Health Crisis Part 1 and Teen Mental Health Crisis Part 2. I would recommend listening to both - the second episode provides a very interesting perspective to teens and screen/social media that is worth consumption!

Safe Social Network Resources
It is important families are aware of what is out there and it is hard keeping up with technology.
We understand that all families are different. Some families decide to give their child a phone earlier than others. Some families have iPads, iPods, chromebooks, tablets and other devices at home and others do not. Regardless of your situation, it is important to keep the lines of communication open with your child and to pay attention to their online activities regardless of device. There are tons of resources out there for you.
This site has some basic general information about social media: what parents should know.
This site is helpful to reinforce messaging at home about social media.
This site is quite useful for families to navigate different platforms and parental controls.
There are also resources out there to help stay connected with your teen. Here are some helpful tips. Here is an example of more formalized training.
Thank you for your partnership and continued communication with us to ensure our students are being responsible online.
Neuroth's Library and Media News
As we approach the end of the school year, I will be working with students and families to locate all overdue books. Any books that have been checked out for more than 8 weeks and cannot be located will incur a replacement fee. Please help students scour homes, vehicles, and anywhere else library books may be hiding!
Summer reading lists and media resources for students and families are available here!
Ms. Judy is also putting together the summer reading program at CFL - stay tuned for more information about that!
The second graders wrapped up their climate zone research with presentations for first grade and families yesterday. After spending weeks researching, they turned their notes into an informational paragraph, and worked with a group to create dioramas with Ms. G in art class.
Teaching and Learning by Mrs. Foxall
Summer Slide
Summer slide, also known as summer learning loss, refers to the decline of academic skills and knowledge that can occur when children are out of school for summer vacation. Research shows that students, particularly younger ones, can lose a significant portion of what they have learned during the previous school year over the summer break.
To help avoid any learning loss, parents can incorporate learning activities into their children's routines, such as reading books, engaging in educational games, participating in summer camps or programs that focus on academic subjects, and encouraging real-world learning experiences. Obviously, summer is also a time for relaxation, play, and exploration. By striking a balance between fun and learning, parents can help prevent summer slide while still allowing their children to enjoy their break.
The Converse Free Library runs a summer reading challenge that many of our students take part in. Here are some links to research about summer learning loss and a few resources for some summer academic activities.

The Specials Spotlight
¡Loteríá! by Mr. Harkins
Loteria is a Bingo-like game that has been played in Mexico for hundreds of years. Instead of ping-pong balls, the "caller" uses cards to give the clues that the players can mark on their boards. We play Lotería in Spanish classes from time to time - on holidays, to mark special occasions, or just for a fun game. It provides the opportunity for students to listen closely to a description of an item (because they want to win first :), and to learn about some cultural differences between Mexico and the US. We'll be playing Lotería in our classes to help celebrate the end of the school year and the start of summer!
Music Update by Ms. O'Leary
Congratulations to all the students who participated in the Music for a Spring Evening violin and piano concert last night with Ms. Damaris. Thank you for sharing your hard work with your families and the community at this lovely event!
The Upper Valley Music Center is hosting a mini summer camp for youth fiddlers happening the week of July 31st - August 4th. Here is a link for more details if you're interested: UVMC- Youth Fiddler Summer Camp

K-2 PE by Mrs. D.
Students in the primary grades have been learning about the many events in the sport of track and field. Events such as running long distance and sprinting, long jumping, and hurdling. These are just some of the fun things that students have taken part in to learn about in the wonderful world of track and field.
Disc Golf in Team Tournament Play and Grade 5 PE by Mrs. D.
Don’t let our tech guy fool you! He has some mad disc golf skills! This week in TTP elective and 5th grade PE, Mr. G joined us to teach the middle school kids some of the techniques involved with the increasingly popular sport of disc golf.
Combining frisbee and golf, this sport requires being able to “drive” a frisbee long distances and being able to “putt” into a small chained stand. No small feat and quite challenging.
Several courses have been created around the Upper Valley, thanks to Mr. G’s organization and high level of interest in putting tournaments together.
A big thanks to him for allowing us to do something new and different that uses a combined set of skills to extend the art of sport play at Lyme School and in our local area.

Spanish Summer Camp is Back!
Spanish Summer Camp is open to current 1st through 5th graders, and will run from June 26th to June 30th. There are half and full day options.
From Señor Harkins:
At Spanish Summer Camp, we play a lot. We do a lot of the same activities and games that we do during Spanish class at school, but it is much more laid-back and summery. We spend a lot of time outdoors, we make up stories, play games, sing songs, and it's a great way to kick off summer. It happens right here at the school.
To register, you can fill out this google form, or contact Señor Harkins for a paper registration form (or for any other questions).
