ACHIEVING SUCCESS TOGETHER - RÉUSSIR ENSEMBLE
October 14, 2021
Dear École Charlie Killam School Community,
It's great to connect with you again.
We hope you had a great Thanksgiving weekend.
We have been reaching out often as of late but always want to make sure you stay connected and informed with what is happening in our school.
Emergency Preparedness!
Dear ÉCKS School Community,
Battle River School Division has an emphasis on safe and caring schools. Part of providing a safe learning environment is helping students and staff be prepared for an emergency.
Our school holds six fire drills each year and we will also be holding two lockdown drills – one in October and another in the spring.
A lockdown is when all the students and staff are tucked into their classrooms (or another safe, lockable area of the school) to avoid an intruder inside the building. This is not a situation we expect our schools to encounter but, just like a fire drill, practicing will help us all be better prepared if such an incident does occur.
When we hold our lockdown drill, discussions will also take place with students in a calm, sensitive, age-appropriate way, so as not to generate anxiety or fear. If you’d like to speak to your children ahead of time, to provide additional reassurance that they are safe at school and drills are what we do so we are prepared ‘just in case’, we would welcome your support.
It is possible we will have police officers present for the drill, as well as representatives of the school division. Their role is to help us evaluate our preparedness and suggest any changes we might make in future drills.
Thank you for your cooperation. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact us at the school at 780-672-7785
Sincerely,
ÉCKS Administration
Student / Parent / Teacher Conferences
When: October 21, 2021 (4:00 - 9:00)
How: As you know, student-parent-teacher conferences will look different this year. Instead of in-person meetings, we will be doing them virtually through Google Meet.
Focus: The focus of this conference will be on connection. We want you, as parents/guardians, along with your child, to lead the conversation. We would like you to identify your child’s strengths, areas for growth, goals (academic, social, emotional), and strategies for success. It would be beneficial to discuss these with your child ahead of time.
Who: We are hopeful that parents/guardians, along with their child, can be part of the Google Meet.
How: If you are interested in booking a conference appointment, you can reach out to your child’s teacher by finding them in our staff directory. The teacher will then provide you with a 10-minute time and schedule a Google Meet invite for the evening of October 21st using your child’s school email address. We strongly encourage your child to present in the conversation. If your child is unavailable or you wish to provide us with an alternate email address to join Google Meet, please discuss this with your child’s teacher. If Google Meet is not available to you, please inform your child’s teacher and alternate plans can be made.
Next Steps Following Student - Parent - Teacher Conferences: This information will be valuable when our staff engages in collaborative responses to student learning. As we value parent communication, we encourage you to reach out to teachers at any point throughout the year to discuss student learning and student progress.
We have confirmed a date for our school pictures!
Soccer Academy - Last Call for Students to Register!
The Soccer Academy program runs from February to June. The deadline to register for the program is October 31, 2021.
VIP Meat Fundraiser
The Ecole Charlie Killam Music Parent Association is happy to announce that we are once again running our popular VIP Meats fundraiser in partnership with Ecole Charlie Killam School Council. The profits realized will be split between the Grade 7 and 8 band students, the Music Parent Association, and the ECKS School Council.
Money raised for the music program will be used in two ways:
- For grade 7 and 8 band students, their money raised will go towards their band trips and camps
- The band program will utilize their portion of the general profits for instrument repairs, and any other necessary expenses to help in rebuilding the program.
- Money raised for the school will go towards enhancements to the Learning Commons which all students use and love as well as towards more outdoor activity equipment.
Order forms will be given out to students on October 6, and all orders will be due back in by October 21, 2021. (Only e- transfer will be accepted as payment for orders.)
Please send orders to ckmusicparents@gmail.com (please remember to put the student's name and grade in the message area of the e-transfer and on the order sheet).
The orders will be delivered to the school on November 2, 2021. As we have nowhere in the school to store items, orders must be picked up between 3:45 - 6:00 on November 2. Please make arrangements to have these items picked up if you are unable to be here yourself. We appreciate it.
Should you need a new copy of the form or one to reference, I have attached a PDF version!
