Dear Students,

I hope this letter finds you well and filled with anticipation for the upcoming school year. As the principal of B.F. Terry High School, I am thrilled to welcome each and every one of you to the 2023-2024 academic year, which is set to commence Monday, August 14, 2023.

First and foremost, I want to express my utmost excitement for the opportunity to embark on this educational journey together. The start of a new school year is always a time filled with promise, new beginnings, and endless possibilities. It is a chance for us to grow, learn, and achieve greatness both individually and as a collective community.

At B.F. Terry High School, we are committed to providing you with an exceptional educational experience that will empower you to reach your full potential. Our dedicated team of educators and staff members have been working tirelessly over the summer to ensure that our school is ready to welcome you back with open arms. From meticulously planning engaging lessons to creating a safe and inclusive environment, we have left no stone unturned in our pursuit of excellence.

This year, we are excited to introduce several new initiatives and programs that will enhance your learning experience. Our goal is to foster a dynamic and innovative environment that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. We will be offering a wide range of extracurricular activities, clubs, and sports teams to cater to your diverse interests and talents. Whether you are passionate about the arts, sports, or community service, there will be ample opportunities for you to explore and excel in your chosen areas.

As we embark on this new school year together, I encourage you to approach it with an open mind, a positive attitude, and a willingness to embrace new opportunities. All students are required to wear their smart tags every day.

Students will wear their 2022-2023 Smart Tag until a new card has been distributed. Students must show form of ID before entering the campus. Skyward verfication on mobile phones are acceptable on a short-term basis.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

For the 2023-2024 school year, all required Lamar Consolidated ISD beginning-of-year forms must be completed online through the Skyward Family Access Center.

Offering these forms digitally allows you the convenience of only updating information that has changed from last school year, while also helping us maintain accurate information in our student information system. Instructions, important dates, and technical assistance regarding the online forms can be found here.

Online forms are available through the Family Access Center, and must be submitted to view your student's online schedule prior to the start of the school year. Your student’s schedule will not be available online through the Family Access Center until all of the beginning-of-year forms are completed for your student and after the campus has released schedules. Student schedules will be available online on Wednesday, Aug. 9th if all online forms have been completed.

For those who need access to a computer or the Internet, computers will be available on campus Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Once beginning-of-year forms are completed, students can view their schedule in Skyward beginning Wednesday, August 9, 2023.

All students are expected to view their schedules online prior to the first day of school as paper schedules will be printed for students who could not access their schedules online. Students who need a printed schedule will report to the Auditorium.

Please feel free to access your schedule in Skyward for the most up-to-date information.

To view your schedule - log in to Skyward, click on the Schedule link (left side), then your schedule will appear.

We encourage parents to use Skyward Family Access to monitor student academic progress and attendance. This web-based program lets you view your student’s daily assignments, grades, and attendance. To receive automatic notifications of grades and daily attendance:

• Log into Skyward Family/Student Access
• Turn on notifications for assignments, attendance, and grades

Students will be able to submit the Terry HS Student Schedule Change form after the first day of classes and will close on Thursday, August 17 at 3:50pm. There will be very few allowable changes after school starts.

Schedule change requests will be considered during the first 4 days of each semester for the following reasons only:

• A. Student is a senior not scheduled in a course needed for graduation
• B. Student has already earned credit for a course in which he/she is currently scheduled
• C. Student does not have prerequisite(s) for a class on his/her schedule
• D. Student has previously failed a course with the same teacher
• E. Student has been dismissed from a program where approval must be granted for placement F. Student does not have a complete schedule
• G. Data error (no lunch, class listed twice, free period, etc.)

If your student should need a schedule change, they are required to complete the schedule change form sent to them in their school email. QR codes will be placed outside the counseling office to access the schedule change form. Once the schedule change has been approved, and the student schedule has been updated, the student, former teacher, receiving teacher, and parent will receive an electronic copy of their new schedule. The communication will include the date the student should proceed utilizing their new schedule.

Dear Lamar CISD Community,

On September 1, 2023, House Bill 114 (HB 114), will go into effect, which is a law that aims to address the serious issue of vaping/e-cigarette use among students. Under this law, any student found in possession of any kind of vaping/e-cigarette device on campus premises will face immediate and automatic placement in a Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP).

Furthermore, the law states that a student shall be removed from class and placed in DAEP if the student engages in conduct involving a public school that contains the elements of the offense of false alarm or report under Section 42.06, Penal Code, or terroristic threat under Section 22.07, Penal Code.

The Alternative Learning Center (ALC) is the DAEP at Lamar CISD.

We take the health and well-being of our students seriously, and we recognize the importance of creating a safe and conducive learning environment. Vaping, despite being marketed as a safer alternative to traditional smoking, poses significant health risks. The rise of vaping incidents among adolescents necessitates decisive action to protect our students and promote responsible choices.

Additionally, we want to assure you that our school staff and administrators are committed to creating a supportive environment for our students. If any student is struggling with vaping addiction or peer pressure, we are here to help. Our counseling services are available to provide guidance, support, and resources to address such challenges.

It is crucial that we work together to educate our students about the dangers of vaping and to support them in making positive choices for their health and future.

How does LCISD define an e-cigarette?

• Means an electronic cigarette or any other device that simulates smoking by using a mechanical heating element, battery, or electronic circuit to deliver nicotine or other substances to the individual inhaling from the device or a consumable liquid solution or other material aerosolized or vaporized during the use of an electronic cigarette or other device described by this provision. The term includes any device that is manufactured, distributed, or sold as an e-cigarette, e-cigar, or epipe or under another product name or description and a component, part, or accessory for the device, regardless of whether the component, part, or accessory is sold separately from the device.
  

Students are allowed to bring their own telecommunication devices to school. This includes, but is not limited to: cell phones, smart phones, iPads, earbuds, tablets and laptop computers. All devices must remain in student backpacks for the duration of the day. Students will be allowed to take out and use their devices at lunch only unless otherwise directed by administration. Teachers also have discretion to allow device use in class for instruction purposes only. Students must follow teacher and district rules in regards to using their device. Using a phone in school is a privilege that can be revoked at any time.

Telecommunication devices that disrupt the education process, are used inappropriately or when not directed by a teacher or staff member, or used in violation of the Student Code of Conduct will be confiscated. School personnel will write an office referral and it will be turned into the principal’s office. If this is the students first offense, they will be allowed to retrieve their device at the end of the school day. If the student is leaving early they must return at the end of the school day to retrieve their device, no exceptions will be made. Repeated offenses will require parent/guardian, and/or a third party that retains legal right of ownership to obtain a release of the electronic device for a monetary fee of $15. These items that disrupt the education process by being on will be temporarily confiscated. School personnel will collect the electronic device and turn it in to the principal’s office. Parents, guardians, and/or a third party that retains legal right of ownership may obtain a release of the electronic device for a monetary fine. After a 30-day period has expired, the school shall dispose of the electronic device. A student who refuses to turn over his/her electronic device when asked by a school employee will have a disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, ranging from a major offense to an expellable offense. The use of a mobile telephone or any device capable of capturing images of any violation of the student code of conduct is strictly prohibited while at school or at a school-related or school-sponsored events.

Inappropriate use of Cell Phone Practice:

• 1st Offense – Parent Contact, Phone confiscated and returned at end of day.
• 2nd Offense – Parent Contact, Phone confiscated, and parent must retrieve phone with a $15 fee.
• 3rd Offense – Parent Contact, Phone confiscated, parent must retrieve phone with a $15 fee, and student is assigned ISS.
• 4th Offense - Parent Contact, Phone confiscated, parent must retrieve phone with a $15 fee, and student is suspended.
• 5th Offense - Parent Contact, Phone confiscated, parent must retrieve phone with a $15 fee, and student is recommended to attend ALC.
• 6th Offense & Beyond – Recommend ALC Placement

Many have asked about a school supply list for the upcoming school year. Teachers will share this information during the first week of school, but the #1 item on every high schooler’s back-to-school list is a Composition Notebook.

Most core classes will utilize these for interactive notebooks. Rangers, they’re on sale for just $.50 each at the Rosenberg Office Depot. For just a few dollars, you can load up on these much-needed items in time for the first day of school.

Parking tags can be picked up at our reception area from 8am-5pm. Tags are $25 cash or online payment.

Parking spaces are first come first served or if you have a requested spot and it is available you can be assigned to that spot.

Additionally, Parking passes are avalibale to all students with a drivers license and car insurance, regardless of their grade classification.

Please review the revised parking lot diagram to visualize our morning arrival process.

All students and staff using the main parking lot will be issued a parking tag and assigned a parking spot. This campus safety initiative will allow motorists to move more quickly through the parking lot since their daily spot is already reserved.

Morning Drop-Off: Parents will release their scholars in front of the gymnasium entrance for students who will be dropped off each morning.

The Bus Ramp is for Bus drop-off only.

Additionally, please observe our new entrance and exit-only driveways. This will allow vehicles to exit the parking lot more quickly and safely.

Please be sure to create a Parent Portal Account in Smart Tag, to ensure that you know your student’s bus route, bus stops, and other important information to track your student while riding the bus to and from school.

The B.F. Terry FFA Booster Club will host a back-to-school bash fishing tournament on August 19th from 1-3 p.m. at Matagorda Harbor.

Cost to enter is $300 per four-person team. Half of entry fees paid out in cash prizes. Cash prizes of awarded to best redfish, trout and flounder. Proceeds go to Class of 2024 Senior Scholarships.

Terry High School is a closed campus. Scholars must remain on campus from the start of school until the end of school. Scholars are not permitted to leave campus for lunch.

We will not permit scholars to receive outside lunch delivered from delivery services such as Uber Eats, Grub Hub, Door Dash, etc.

This is for the protection of all of our scholars. We cannot have fast food delivery drivers looking for scholar on campus. If food is delivered to campus, we will refuse to accept it.

We welcome you to come and eat lunch with your scholar. Please contact your scholar’s grade level administrator at least 24 hours in advance and ensure you are prepared with the proper identification to receive a visitor’s pass. You will need your ID or Driver’s License. Please only bring lunch for your scholar.

Only visitors who are listed on the students emergency contacts are able to drop off food items for students.
