GLOW GAZETTE
WEEK OF OCTOBER 23, 2023
Message from the Principal
Students & Parents,
We have a fun filled week ahead at GLOW, as this is SPIRIT WEEK! We have designated "dress-up" and "dress-down" days for students that were proposed by our Middle School and High School Student Government Association (SGA) groups and approved by our administrators. You can find the full list of designated days in the newsletter below.
Our culminating activity for the week is our Annual Fall Festival on Friday. Each grade level has an assigned time to attend to enjoy pumpkin painting, games, a bounce house obstacle course, delicious treats, and more! It promises to be a fun time.
We will wrap up Fall Festival and the week with our monthly Senior Spotlight, where we will gather in the courtyard to celebrate our seniors who have been accepted to college throughout the month of October.
While it promises to be a fun week at GLOW, it will continue to be a week of learning for our students. Also, all 10th grade students will take the PreACT on Thursday of this week! We look forward to a week of learning, laughter, and memories made together!
Please note that tomorrow is PICTURE DAY at GLOW for all 6th-11th graders. Please ensure that your child is wearing their purple or yellow GLOW polo for school tomorrow!
Wishing you all a great week ahead!
Kate B. Tayloe
Principal

📣 SPIRIT WEEK 📣
School Picture Day
October 23 also kicks off our Spirit Week. On Monday we are having a "Half Way Dress Down Day." 6th-11th graders must wear their GLOW Polo Shirts, but they can wear "Dress Down" bottoms instead of their uniform skirts/pants.
NOTE: 12th Graders are not taking school pictures, so they may dress down (tops & bottoms), as long as they are meeting GLOW's Dress Down Expectations.
Picture Make-Up Day for Senior Portraits (taken this summer) and 6th-11th grade Picture Day on October 23 is scheduled for November 30th!
Parent Webinar - Countdown to College - Funding Your Student's Education
Funding education shouldn’t be a mystery. Having a better understanding of the funding landscape can help families build a sound plan so students can focus on their studies. As part of Countdown to College, NCSEAA and CFNC are pleased to bring your students the webinar How to Pay for College. In this session we will cover the main ways families and students pay for their education and provide some additional places to look for support that they might not have thought of. The webinar is on Tuesday October 24, 2023, 6-7 pm.
You can join the webinar by clicking on THIS LINK or by scanning the QR code at the right.

Student Attendance & HS Course Credit
We want to remind students and parents of the legislative guidelines and GLOW School Board Policy around student attendance. You can read GLOW's Attendance Policy HERE. The implications for chronic absences (more than 10) are especially important to note, as the policy states:
Grade Level Retention/High School Course Credit:
Middle school students who have UNEXCUSED absences for more than 10% (20 days) in a school year may be retained.
High school students who have UNEXCUSED absences for more than 10% (10 days in a semester course; 20 days in a year long course) shall not be awarded course credit regardless of class average.
For HIgh School students, this means that if a student accrues more than 10 unexcused absences in 1st period, for example, they will not receive course credit for their 1st period course. It is so important that students earn credit for all courses for which they are enrolled to ensure they stay on track to graduate with their cohort.
Please ensure that your child is at school unless an absences is absolutely necessary. Also, please ensure that documentation for excused absences are submitted to the student's Leadership Advisory teacher or the school's Data Manager upon the student's return to school.
Community Connections
GLOW is looking to connect with your Church, Civic Group Meeting, or Business to host an information session and help spread the word about our school, all that we offer, and information on applying for the 2024-25 school year. If you'd like to host an information session for your neighborhood at a nearby park or home, that's great as well!
Please contact Jen Wilson-Mathis by email, or you can call or text 910-707-4474 for more information or to schedule. (And if you know Jen, you know she'll bring the snacks!)
