Special Education Scoop
June 2023
Welcome to Summer Time!!
As the final few days of the 22-23 school year come to an end, please take a moment to value the huge impact you have had on the students you teach each and every day. Thank you for all the hard work to support your students at achieving their accomplishments. Your dedication to helping others has allowed our children to master new learning and take steps forward towards achieving life goals.
This month's Special Education Scoop is dedicated to helping us recognize how far our students have come. Please enjoy the pictures and the video below. Be proud of the opportunities that students were able to participate in, all because of the hard work of our exceptional Special Education Staff!
Take some time this summer to recharge, rest, and enjoy time with the people you love.
Thanks for all of your efforts this year!
22-23 Recap Video
Thank you for another great school year. Please view the highlight video we put together:
IEP Completion Reminder
It is the expectation that all IEPs and 3-years that are due before 10/31/23 will be completed this spring. If that expectation is not met, the current case manager will be held responsible for completing this obligation next year, it will not be the newly receiving case manager.
Unified Sports Recap
Upwards of 20 students participated on the Bocce Ball team this spring. Highlights were: Hosting other schools at WMHS and the season end matches at UWM in Pontiac.
The season end banquet was a great celebration of bringing the teams together to recognize their accomplishments.
Many thanks to Larry Lyman and Ra-Mon Watkins for their dedication to our Unified Sports teams this year. Next year we are looking to add soccer and/or E-sports.
Next Step Celebration
On May 25th, 2023 we celebrated the students finishing the Post Secondary Transition Program at the annual Next Step Ceremony. This wonderful event brought all of the classrooms together at the Senior Center to celebrate together. The highlight of the program was the speeches from friends of the graduates as well as the honoree's themselves. Good luck to each of them as they take their own next step!
Act 18 Unified Prom
On May 19, 2023 our awesome students in the Act 18 program celebrated their annual prom. Students were awarded a certificate of completion for completing 4 years at the high school and moving on to adult services/programs. Other students were exiting the program as they had reached the age of 26.
This was a fun event, celebrating staff and students!
Thank you to all those who helped to make this day possible!
What is work-based learning (WBL)?
Work-based learning is real-world job training experiences students will engage in at any time during their day. The placement, length of time on the experience, or the number of experiences may vary based on the outcomes aligned with the student's transition goals. These experiences may be paid or unpaid.
This school year, 100% of our Non-CTE students, on a certificate of pathway who were able to engage in WBL this school year, did so successfully!

Para Retirement Dinner Poem from Ann Heinicke
Written by Emmalee Hardman
Somewhere out there,
There’s a Para,
A Teacher’s Aide,
A Paraeducator,
A Para-Professional.
Somewhere out there,
There’s a Para wiping a nose,
A Para wiping tears,
All for the love of a child.
Somewhere out there,
There’s a Para pushing a wheelchair around 3rd base.
A Para cheering and yelling, “go straight.”
All for the love of a child.
Somewhere out there,
There’s a Para repeating a math problem,
A Para sharpening a pencil,
All for the love of a child.
Somewhere out there,
There’s a Para showing a student how to go through the lunch line,
And how to make new friends,
All for the love of a child.
Somewhere out there,
There”s a Para teaching the student the box step,
so he can ask a girl to dance.
A Para reminding students to be kind.
All for the love of a child.
Somewhere out there,
There’s a Para teaching a student how to tie their shoes,
Or change their clothes.
All for the love of a child.
Somewhere out there,
There’s a Para repeating a zoom lesson.
A Para cleaning a classroom.
All for the love of a child.
Somewhere out there,
There’s a Para making games out of homework.
A Para striking clover deals to see progress.
All for the love of a child.
Somewhere out there,
There’s a Para lying awake at night,
A Para anxious about a new day.
All for the love of a child.
Somewhere out there,
There’s YOU.
A Teacher’s Aide,
A Paraeducator,
A Para-Professional.
The Backbone.
The silent force that moves quickly and quietly through the school.
This is my shout out to you!!!!!
You are forgotten by many,
But most importantly,
A HERO so some.
For those who are or who ever have been a PARA.
I know you do this each and everyday,
All for the love of a child.
