The Best Gift of All
Dear Atholton Families,
The time between Thanksgiving Break and Winter Break is always a tough time for students. They are coming off an extended time away from school rules and routines and an even longer break seems so close; but the four weeks can feel so long for them, for you, for the staff, for all of us. As I shared with students today, we're entering a season with various holidays being celebrated and the best gift they can give the staff here at Atholton is to "keep it together" these next four weeks!
For the most part, students have been doing a pretty good job with most of the school rules. There were only 9 suspensions for the first marking period compared to 22 last year. The "big stuff" is definitely noticeable, but it's the classroom behavior that makes the biggest difference for staff each day. We appreciate you encouraging your student to give their teachers and all the staff the best gift of all by:
- Coming to school and class on time and ready to learn
- Putting their cell phones in their backpacks during class
- Taking off their earbuds/headphones in class
- Refraining from using profanity
- Treating classmates and staff with respect
- Making good decisions
This gift is absolutely free. No need to purchase anything online for Cyber Monday (and you wouldn't find it in stores on Black Friday or Small Business Saturday)! Thanks for helping us make the next four weeks as productive as possible! Go Raiders!
Sincerely,
Nick Novak
Principal

Inclusive Schools Week Starts December 4th
Best Buddies is preparing for National Inclusive Schools week and wants you to know about their spirit days, so you/your students can join in:
Monday---Pajama Day
Pajamas can be the battle uniform for children with cancer and too often kids fight that battle; isolated in hospital rooms or when they are home for months at a time.
Tuesday---Tie-Dye Day
Tie Dye represents the infinite potential of individuals with autism as well as their limitless possibilities and abilities.
Wednesday---Mixed Match Socks Day
The first World Down Syndrome Day was held on March 21, 2006. Chromosomes are shaped like socks. Wearing mixed-match socks shows off and celebrates how cool our Down Syndrome students are with their extra chromosome. “Be a homie with an extra chromosome!”
Thursday---Green Glow for Mental Health Awareness Day
The color green symbolizes the continual awareness of mental health in order to help fight the stigma that is often associated with it.
Friday--- Best Buddies Pride Day/Twin Day
Best Buddies is our inclusive friendship club at Atholton High School. It is an opportunity for everyone to create life-long friendships between students in our academic life skills program and the greater Raider community.
Service Hour Opportunity
If you/your student needs service hours, please contact Friends of Rabbits, Ms. Wendy Woods @ 410.802.3921. This non-profit organization is the largest rabbit rescue organization in the Washington DC/Baltimore region.
