PSAT8
March 9, 2023
Hello Students and Parents,
We will be administering the PSAT8 to all 8th-grade students on Wednesday, April 12. This is a required state test for all of our students. Testing will begin at 8:00 AM and conclude by 11:05 AM.
The PSAT8 is the first test in the SAT Suite of Assessments. It sets a readiness baseline, allowing students and teachers to pinpoint areas for focused practice as students progress through High School (Michigan Coordinator Manual, College Board Pg. 3)
This paper and pencil test covers Reading, Writing, and Mathematics and is composed of both a calculator and a non-calculator section of the test.
Students will be sent home with the PSAT 8/9 Study Guide within the next few weeks. This guide contains valuable information about the nature of the test and tips for a successful test day. I will put something in the newsletter to let parents know the guide has been sent home.
Students should come to school on the day of the test fully rested and with the following materials:
No. 2 pencils (x2)
Scientific Calculator (Not graphing)
Water bottle clearly labeled with the student’s name
If your student does not have these materials, they will be provided by the school.
For additional information about this test, please see the CollegeBoard website at: https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/psat-8-9
Please let me know if you have any questions about the PSAT8 or any of our testing procedures.
Sincerely,
Scott Stockwell
HMS Principal
SRO Announcement
HPS SRO Announcement Hopkins Public Schools was fortunate enough to receive a grant from the Office of School Safety that will allow for the addition of a School Resource Officer (SRO). The SRO position is partially supported by the FY23 grant funds awarded by the State of Michigan and administered by the Michigan State Police.
According to Superintendent Gary Wood, the district has entered into an agreement with the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office to provide a full-time deputy for this purpose beginning March 1, 2023. The SRO will service all of the schools in the district.
Deputy Tracey Keefauver has been selected for this position. Deputy Keefauver has worked for the Allegan County Sheriff's Office for two years. When asked about her new role, she stated, “I've enjoyed working as a Road Patrol Deputy but I'm so excited to step into the school resource officer position. I can't wait to work with the students and get to know them all. I've had extensive training to prepare me for my new role and I look forward to working with HPS making the school a safe environment for everyone!”
The SRO will assist the district in ensuring the physical safety of the individuals in its schools. They will help to develop and update safety procedures, emergency operations plans and implement best practices. They will help educate students in law-related topics and provide staff with safety training as needed.
“Not only is this a great opportunity for the district, but also for the community. Just think, there will be a deputy in our community every school day that can rapidly respond to emergency situations that occur.”, Wood stated.
Please Welcome our New and Returning Staff Members
Please help me welcome, parent, and current Hopkins Bus Driver, Maegen Houseman. Maegen will be here in the Middle School on Thursdays and Fridays. She is a welcome addition to Hopkins Middle School paraprofessional team.
