Hubbard Woods Update

Principal Update
Hubbard Woods Families,
Despite the rainy weather, I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. With any luck, the weather will improve soon! With nicer weather, an increase in bike riding occurs. Please remind your bike riders to park their bikes on the bike racks and to lock them up! Thank you for helping us keep them off the sidewalks!
I am looking forward to the Strings concert tonight!
Sincerely,
Beth Carmody
Spring Sing Information 1st-4th Grade
Dear HW Families:
Our Spring Sing is upon us! It may seem like it is shrouded in mystery, but it is a new process for us and we have been having SO much fun building this plane as we are flying it. Here is what you need to know before the show:
• The kids wrote, composed, and produced everything during their music class times. When I worked with the Metropolitan Opera in NYC for a number of years, the Creating Original Opera curriculum they developed was focused on the creative process being owned by the kids, from the creation of the script and the composing of the melodies to the management and direction of the production company. This is our first year immersing our entire school in this process!
• If you receive a "costume and prop request" from the student designers this week, we are hoping you do *not* feel as if you need to purchase anything. Please ask your child(ren) to do the searching, scrounging, and borrowing to make our low-budget, recycled materials show a little more detailed.

Phones/Smart Watches Reminders:
This is a reminder about smart phones and watches at school.
Phones are to be kept on silent or off and put in student backpacks during the day. They can come out of bags after dismissal as students leave school.
Watches can be worn for the purpose of telling time ONLY and should be put into airplane mode and the wifi access turned off while they are in school.
Students are not to call, text, or message their family members during the school day. If students need to reach a member of their family, they can ask Mrs. Kannellos for help.

Elementary Math Core Values in Winnetka D36
Communication
Communication plays an important role in our math instruction. Through communicating about their thinking, students strengthen and demonstrate their understanding. They also learn to think critically and flexibly by working to understand another’s thinking and approach. Our classrooms are filled with whole class and smaller group discussions around math problems facilitated by the teacher. One of the key ways teachers respond to students’ needs for challenge or additional support is through the types of questions they ask them in these conversations. Students are frequently asked to share how they are thinking about a problem, what strategy they are using and why they chose it, and how their thinking is similar or different from their classmates. These conversations are opportunities for higher level thinking and challenge. Not only are students asked to communicate their thinking verbally, but also to represent it visually through pictures, equations, and models. This written communication is important and challenging work. Finally, our classrooms provide continual opportunites for collaboration between students encouraging them to learn with and from one another. Through games, discussions, and partner work we strive to build a mathematical community that is simultaneously rigorous, supportive, and engaging.
