Instrumental Music Semester Spotlights
Our Ridgeline HS instrumental musicians have been hard at work this semester. Not only have they produced four fall and holiday concerts, and two stunning school-wide assemblies of exciting and dynamic repertoire, but many of our individual students have pursued opportunities outside of our school campus. Several musicians have been nominated or selected by audition for various honors ensembles throughout the pacific northwest region. It started with five band students being selected to the University of Montana All Star Band. These students worked with the incredible Hollywood composer, Julie Giroux and the University of Montana Music Departmental staff.
At the end of 2023 we had a student selected to the Western International Honor Band held in Seattle, WA. WIBC features conductors from around the world at both the professional and collegiate level, working with 500 of the best HS musicians auditioned in the United States, Canada and Australia. Ridgeline trumpeter, Josh Parker was able to be guided under the baton by a handful of world-class conductors from Central Washington University, University of Southern California, Rowan University, the University of Northern Colorado and the United States Marine Corps.
And to kickoff the start of 2024, thirteen students were nominated and selected to the Pacific Lutheran Honors Weekend early this January. Working with legendary composers and conductors, members of the orchestra and band were able to prepare a professional concert with ensembles of 100 and 150 students selected from across the state. They also were able to perform in the historical Lagerquist Concert Hall - a stunning venue for the eyes and ears to experience live music.
We are so blessed to have so many students recognized throughout the region for their musical ability. These events are private pursuits for the individuals, but they are ambassadors of Ridgeline HS to countless teachers, students and administrators quite literally from around the world. We would like to thank all of our students who pursue excellence through the exploration of music. You help us live our department creed: Ubuntu ("I am because we are") by sharing your personal artistry with all of your equally amazing and dedicated peers here at home! Best wishes at this weekend's Solo and Ensemble Regional Qualifier for the WIAA State Contest this spring. The prize is in the effort and the journey!
RHS Debate
Ryland Jacoby (11) and Sienna Shadd (10) each collected first-place awards at the Southside Invitational speech and debate tournament on Jan. 19-20 at Shadle Park.
Jacoby won the novice Congress Debate division and was also named the top presiding officer. Shadd took first in novice Impromptu speaking.
Alyssa McSwain (10) finished in third place in Informative speaking, and Alaina Mitrovich (11) and Kaylee Roome (9) were each a finalist in novice Impromptu speaking.
The team's final regular-season tournament is the Thomas S. Foley Memorial Tournament at University High School on Feb. 1-3 before the district tournament at North Central on Feb. 10.
On Thursday, January 25, the RHS Accounting and Financial Algebra classes participated in Gesa Credit Union's Bite of Reality Fair which gave our Falcon students a reality check when it comes to planning and executing a monthly budget based on a given occupation, family size, and monthly income. Each student received a different scenario and had to travel to various tables representing the expenses we all encounter in real life. They had to make important decisions about what to purchase based on what they could afford. It was a great finance-focused semester culminating experience for our students. We want to give a big shout out to the Gesa Credit Union volunteers for giving an entire day of their time to our students for this awesome event. We appreciate you, especially Ryan and Greg, for organizing the Bite of Reality Fair. THANK YOU!
