Pride,
Happy Sunday! I don’t know about your child, but the staff and I were exhausted when we left on Friday. The first full week of school is always a test of one’s resiliency. From the looks on the staff’s and students’ faces on Friday, the first week of school almost won, but guess what, we prevailed.
All joking aside, last week was a relatively great week. The staff and students appear to be settling into their routines. Sure, we’ve had to make some minor adjustments, but everyone took them in stride.
That’s what I love about Riverwalk Academy’s staff, students, parents. We’re the “drivers of our own bus.” We’re not complacent and we don’t sit back and let our environment control us. We are our own drivers and we’ve done an outstanding job filling our bus with passengers (staff, students, and parents) who fuel us with their positive energy. Everyone’s enthusiasm for Riverwalk Academy does nothing but attract others to us.
Let me explain what I mean by positive energy. One of the best things about Riverwalk Academy is our staff. We have incredible educators with outstanding talents. Yes, they are all smart and know their content, but what impresses me the most is their positive energy. Last Friday, our middle school teachers came to me to reflect about the Friday schedule. To simplify their discussion, they concluded that they really disliked it. Something wasn’t quite “clicking” with the schedule.
I’ve seen teams in the past who would have “dumped” their frustrations on us late Friday afternoon then they would have expected us to fix it.
At some places, the usual approach to problems is to blame others for them, which leads people down a negative path that doesn’t produce good results. Instead, being positive creates enthusiasm, joy, and success.
What actually took place on Friday afternoon was quite the opposite. After having a moment to vent their frustrations, a colleague asked the group, “What do we need to do to fix it?” The team took a deep breath then went to work brainstorming. With very little input from myself or Mr. Graham, the team of teachers, using their positive energy and desire to be their own drivers, found a solution that better meets the needs of the students and staff.
Pride, thank you all for fueling the Riverwalk Academy bus with your positive energy. I hope you and your child(ren) have another wonderful week.
In Strength and Blessings,
~Dr. Compton
