Maize Middle School
A Message From Our Principal Mr. Cramer
Hey MMS Eagle Families!
Thank you for a wonderful first quarter of the school year. We have spent a lot of time fine tuning our routines and getting used to each other. In addition, we have been busy setting important goals for improvement for the 23/24 school year. We are working hard to improve our academic proficiency in key areas and improve school wide behavior support. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve as your MMS principal and am finding joy in each day. Below are a few things to be thinking about as we head into the weeks ahead.
Attendance at Events: Our students have had the opportunity to attend many extracurricular events both at MMS and on other campuses. They have done an exceptional job with their behavior and we are proud of them. As a reminder please visit with your students about our expectation to attend events and participate for the purpose intended. For example, if our student is in attendance at a MHS basketball game we expect them to be spectators of that event and uphold our values and behavioral expectations. Should a MMS student be asked to leave any event outside the school day an administrator will meet with them and may impose a longer term activity suspension. I have great trust in our students, know they will represent MMS well at all events, and appreciate your support in this matter.
Lanyards/ID: One of our new policies to help maintain a safe environment is that all students are expected to wear their photo identification on a school issued lanyard each day. We have worked hard to develop practices and routines with the new process.. Almost all of our students have them each day and are wearing them. We will continue to provide needed reminders and follow up with students as needed including assigning consequences as appropriate for students that repeatedly do not have their lanyard and ID at school, Your support in this greatly valued.
All of our fall sports and activities have wrapped up and we are very proud of all participants. Girls basketball, Wrestling, and Scholars’ bowl are beginning now or have begun within the last week. In addition, we have held several concerts and are preparing for more in the winter seasons.
We continue to focus on telling our MMS story this year. As I have reminded students and staff if we do not tell our story someone else will and they will leave out all of the good stuff! We also invite all of you to be part of telling our story. If you have questions, concerns, suggestions, or affirmations please share with us.
Sincerely,
Chad Cramer

A Note From Our Assistant Principal Paige Hill
It’s hard to believe October is already over! We are officially into the second nine weeks, and we are excited to continue watching our students grow and succeed.
What is CKH? CKH stands for Capturing Kids’ Hearts, a relationship-building approach to discipline that helps create self-managing groups. It shows students how to create high-achieving levels of learning by enhancing students’ connectedness to others through strengthening health bonds with teachers and building an acceptable behavior foundation collaboratively. Please see below for the November CKH Newsletter. I challenge you to ask your student(s) about CKH and how they see it utilized here at Maize Middle.

Nurse Notes
We have been working hard in the Health Office getting all of our screenings completed. We do vision and hearing screenings on all new students, all 7th grade students, all students with IEPs, and students who failed them last year. We hope to complete these by Thanksgiving Break. If your student fails his/her vision test, we will send home a letter of referral, asking you to take them for evaluation. If your student fails his/her hearing screening, we will recheck them in a few weeks and notify you after that re-check if we recommend further follow up. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!
Just a friendly reminder that students are not allowed to carry any medication (over the counter, or prescription) with them. The ONLY exception is EMERGENCY medications that we have Dr’s orders on file for them to be able to carry. If you have any questions, please let me know!
We go through a lot of supplies in the Health Office… if anyone feels that they could help us out by donating some of the basics…. We would appreciate it!

A Note From The Counselors
7 STEPS TO SUCCEEDING IN MIDDLE SCHOOL
1.Need Help? Ask Yourself:
- What information do you need to do this assignment?
- Where are you going to look for it?
- Where do you think you should begin?
- What do you need to do next?
- Can you describe how you’re going to solve this problem?
- What did you try that didn’t work?
- What did you try that did work?
- Develop a system to track important papers
- Use labeled folders and binders.
- Use a planner to track assignments
- Make a "to do" list.
- These are just a few ways to get organized. What could help you stay organized?
- Refers to your planner/calendar on a regular basis. Know when your classes are.
- Divide your work up into manageable tasks.
- Pay attention to how much time you spend on each assignment and studying.
- Start a new page for each new class each day. Date it. Leave space between topics or ideas so you can scan the page more easily later.
- Take down key words and concepts, not sentences. Develop your own system of abbreviations or symbols (such as w/ for with or math symbols such as > or =) to take down key points.
- Listen for word clues from the teacher. Teachers often signal what’s important to note, using phrases such as “The three incidents that led to the War of 1812 were…”
- Review notes after class to make sure they’re accurate and complete. Doing this just before starting homework in a particular subject can help a student focus on the topic at hand.
- Find the times of the day that your efforts will be most effective.
- Practice active learning when studying – highlighting notes, using Post-its to mark key textbook passages, making study cards, and mapping and diagramming concepts.
- Learn to memorize.
7. Get a Tutor if You Need One
Eagles Landing
We are very excited about Eagles Landing again this year! We will continue to focus on character traits through Capturing Kids' Hearts social-emotional lessons on Wednesdays. Mondays will still be devoted to helping students organize their binders and check grades (Making Mondays Matter). Tuesdays and Thursdays will focus on homework help and re-teaching concepts as needed via Study Hall. Fridays will be all about engaging in passion projects and getting to build new relationships within the building. Each month, the building will focus on a new character trait. November is Teamwork. During the month, social-emotional lessons, an optional challenge, and student of the month will be focused around this theme. We are excited to recognize our students that exude these character traits!

KAY Club News
KAY club will be collecting socks, hats, gloves, and scarfs for homeless veterans from November 6-8. Your donation can be given to the office or Mrs. Soukup's art room. The grade level that brings the most donations will get a "No Walk the Track" day later this month. KAY club has a goal of collecting 200 items. Please consider helping us reach our goal!
In other news KAY club teamed up with Maize Intermediate School for their annual Trick-Or-Treat for UNICEF event on October 23rd. Students dressed in costume and collected donations door to door then had a pizza party afterward to celebrate the success. They collected just over $200 for UNICEF in about 1 hour.
KAY club also had a morning of service on October 20th where 16 members went to the Maize Early Childhood Center to play games and toys with the preschools. Then they went to Cedar Creek pumpkin patch where they picked up trash and then had time to enjoy the patch after volunteering. It was a nice day of service and recreation together as a club.
