THS College & Career Center
Third Edition Newsletter
A letter from the College & Career Center
Hello Tennyson Community,
We're also happy to announce the we made it past our March 2nd financial aid application priority deadline for four year colleges! Over the past couple weeks, I've also had quite a few seniors coming into my "office" asking about scholarships. So, to make scholarships easy to find, we have created a Weekly Scholarship Announcement Document for students to explore recently posted scholarships. We also have our complete database of scholarships and I highly encourage students to check it out! There are a lot of scholarships available; many having due dates in March & April.
And finally, we are so excited to present Spring College & Career Exploration Month, which is here and in full effect for the entirety of March! In our first week of the month, we encouraged students to explore careers with personality and work interest quizzes. And, as I write this newsletter, we are now in the midst of week #2 which highlights Alumni Career Panels every day! Lastly, next week will be dedicated to college experience stories; with college readiness workshops to end the month off right. Please explore the Career and College Panels Here to see what is in store. Enjoy!
Warmly,
Danielle DuPee

Featured Article: School is Almost Out! Now how should I Spend my Summer??
Now is a great time to start Your Summer Program Search!
This summer will surely be different with many programs being virtual and others temporarily unavailable. But you can still use the Summer break to explore a new interest or pursue a passion!
Are you wondering about what kind of Summer activity would best add value to your college applications? The good news is, from a college admission perspective, there is no wrong activity. As long as the student is engaged in something, whether it's staying home to babysit siblings, taking care of family member(s), taking a class (non-academic is fine), working a job or an internship, attending a virtual summer program, it can all be valuable.
Rising Sophomore Summer: Explore! Try different things, follow your interests to find out what resonates with you. Some ideas: go to camp, do things with your family, attend a virtual summer enrichment program, volunteer or get a job if it sounds interesting.
Rising Junior Summer: Delve into what interests you, get curious, dig down a level. Is there a volunteer opportunity, internship, job or class that relates to your interests?
Rising Senior Summer: Continue to do something meaningful with your interest. Perhaps it's continuing your job or internship from last summer, perhaps it's engaging with another aspect of your interest through research or volunteering. Just remember, leave time this summer to start brainstorming and outlining your admission essays!
Bonus Article: SAT vs ACT - How to decide which one is best?
Should I take the ACT or the SAT? How do I know know which one is better? Do schools favor one over the other? For juniors, and some sophomores, these questions are likely circulating around in your head. The answer to all is "It really just depends." Let me explain:
Determining which test to take really becomes an individual decision. Since all colleges within the US accept either one, the choice truly becomes yours. The first step in sorting through your personal answer is to take a practice test for both. Once you receive scores for both practice tests there may be an obvious choice, however, it's possible it still remains unclear. If you find yourself in that position here are some questions to consider:
- Did you prefer the format of one over the other?
- When looking deeper into the subcategories of the tests, what stands out?
- Which math did you prefer? The ACT has a heavier focus on Geometry, tends to go broader and not as deep and allows calculators on all sections. The SAT has a stronger focus on Algebra and data analysis and only allows calculators on certain sections.
- Does taking the science section help my application because of my field of interest?
Note: College entrance exams may be an important part of your college application and the admission decision. However, Due to Covid 19 the requirements have have changed at some institutions:
SAT/ACT Recent Updates
UC: test scores are optional for Fall 2022 (can be considered for admission); will not be considered for Fall 2023 admissions.
CSU: test scores will not be considered for Fall 2022 nor Fall 2023 admissions.
Private/Out-of-state/HBCU's: Check each school you're interested in to see their requirements. Some are still considering scores for admissions.
- Keep in mind that SAT & ACT scores will continue to be accepted on the application. Even if it's not for admissions purposes, they can be used to qualify you for scholarships and to help with course placement.

SENIORS
March Senior Checklist:
- Check college portals and emails regularly for to-do list items, admission status updates, and financial aid award letters. Don't miss any deadlines! You don't want the chance of your admissions being revoked.
- Apply for financial aid if you haven't already. March 2nd was the priority deadline for 4-year universities, but you should still fill it out to qualify for some aid. If you're intending to go to community college, the financial aid deadline is July 1st. For those who applied to independent universities, be sure to submit your CSS Profile if required by your university.
- Actively make efforts in trying to weigh your college options and try to figure out which college you would like to attend. Ongoing support through workshops and events from The College & Career Center will happen. Contact Ms. Stacy or Ms. Danielle in the College and Career Center for any specific questions or if you're seeking guidance.
- Keep applying for scholarships – view scholarships at the THS Scholarship List, the uAspire Bay Area Scholarships List, and view weekly updates at THS Scholarship Newsletter. Pay attention to emails from Ms. Danielle, Ms. Stacy, your counselors, as well as check The College & Career Google Classroom.
