Dear Parents and Staff,

Thank you to our teachers, aides and students who are working hard preparing for Museum day on Sun., Feb. 12, 2:00 - 3:30 pm. Friends and families are invited! If you have some time, offer your help to any teacher. We have some really interesting topics.

Our other arena is the auction. We will meet our goal of $112,000 if everyone helps. Thanks for all that you have done already. Be sure to buy your auction tickets. There is a discount for a table of tickets if you purchase it today.

Keep selling raffle tickets. See Kit at the front desk to obtain tickets.

And finally, you probably have your calendar marked for the auction on Sat., March 11, at 5:30 pm at Laurel Manor. You will also be able to shop remotely on March 10 - 12.

Here are a few reminders from last week:

• You can help by purchasing a toy that your child likes and have it sent to the school. Children's item of all types do really well at our auction.
• As a tradition, our graduating 8th graders are invited to attend with you. You just need to buy them a ticket and have them be with you at the auction. They hear about auction for so many years that in their graduating year, we love to have them attend.
• And last, we are working on publishing a photo book of our first 50 years. If you or someone you know could be a partial sponsor of this book, then proceeds on auction night will go 100% to the school. Just let us know.
• And finally, the auction (for adults only) is a dress-up event - anything from cocktail and formal to Sunday best.

As you know, my role at New Morning as Associate Head of School will move forward to the role of Head of School upon Elaine's retirement in June. Having a year to learn the school community before taking the helm is extremely valuable. I have learned so much from Elaine, the staff and your children so far. I am learning what makes NMS such an amazing community and why it is so valued. I would like to hear more from you, the parents, over the next few months to add to my learning. I want to hear about what is going well and what you would like to see improve. Please join me for a focus group via ZOOM. The focus groups are organized by program. You do not need to attend more than one. If you have children in multiple programs, choose one that you feel you want to speak to the most.

We will send out a Sign-Up Genius and zoom links in a separate email. For now, here are the dates for you to attend to add to your calendar. I'm really looking forward to meeting with you.

Young children and their grown-ups are invited to frolic this Winter at New Morning School. Me and My Shadow is a toddler and parent program designed around 2 and 3 year olds. The program allows toddlers an opportunity to experience a preschool setting. Our Me & My Shadow classes provide special one-on-one time for parents and children and first steps toward socializing with other children.

New Morning School follows Plymouth Canton Schools guidelines for winter weather closures. School closures will also be notified via REMIND. Greetings Preschool Families and Friends

With only two weeks left before the NMS Museum, we continue burrowing deep into the world of guinea pigs. This week for art, we will begin designing and constructing our collaborative 3-D model. Together, our rooms voted to create a Robot Guinea Pig!

At our discovery centers, we will learn where in the world guinea pigs originate, along with culture and celebrations surrounding these critters. We will also compare guinea pigs to other animals in the rodent family. At the end of this week, friends can conduct their own surveys related to guinea pig questions they may have. Play-Doh will continue to be our sensory source for this week.

Teachers of the Week for the letter ‘Uu’ are our unique and upstanding friends, Evelyn and Isaac in Marisa‘s room and Ruth and Charles in Danielle‘s room.

After our big museum event, comes Valentine’s Day! On Tuesday, February 14, we’ll celebrate and share valentines. Everyone is invited to attend that morning, but if it’s not your child’s scheduled day, please plan to stay. We’ll craft, eat special snacks, play a game, and pass out valentine cards. A sign up will be shared in the near future. There are 25 preschoolers. Please only fill out the sender portion of the card and leave the recipient portion blank. Remember, we try to avoid candy or sugary treats.

On snowy days, friends may sled if they have one at school (please write their name on it). Unfortunately, friends may not share sleds.

Dear Parents,

We continue to have a wonderful time getting ready for museum. We have had additional helpers and were are grateful for the extra hands! Ms. Lucy was here last week and will come in this week also, which is a great treat for the kids!

Reading and Writing

Last week we spent time practicing our sounds/letters and rhyming. I sent home some letter sound cards that came with our Jolly Phonics program. These are just for fun, for you to play some games with your child. Kindergarteners could use practice with all of the sounds. First graders can use review with sounds, especially vowels and specifically working with 2-letter digraphs. Feel free to use these as you wish at home.

We worked with each student on listening to kid-friendly videos about their topics and gathering interesting facts. For the next two weeks we'll continue to work with kids to find fun facts and interesting data to add to their museum work this week.

We also read Snowmen at Night and had fun writing in our journals about what WE would do at night if we were a Snowperson. We took the rest of the week to read The Oldest Student: How Mary Walker Learned to Read. It's a story about a young girl that was born into slavery and was not allowed to learn how to read. When freed, she was too busy trying to work and survive, until one day at the age of 114, she finally took the time to go to a reading class. It's a wonderful story about perseverance and never giving up on your dream.

Thank you for bringing your museum boards in. If you haven't done so, please purchase and bring in a 4x3 trifold display board. You can order them online or find them at any office supply store also.

Math

I've introduced some math puzzles to our class, as they practice number sense and using logic to recognize and solve problems. They are finding them fun and a bit challenging as well. Some of the games/puzzles can be found digitally also. If you are looking for a fun way to practice math with your child, check it out. https://tangmath.com/games

Valentine's Day

To get ready for Valentine's Day, please have your child make a Valentine box to bring to school. The box needs to fit 12 cards and small bags of treats that are sometimes handed out (think shoebox size). Please send in the box on Tuesday, February 14. We also suggested writing only their names on their Valentine cards (it makes it easier for them to hand them out).

Museum

We are entering week #3! Everyone is working hard at rewriting their questions or working on their papers, making their maps, labeling their diagrams and finishing up their graphs! As they complete their rewrites, they will start making their paper mache models. Later in the week, we will start pulling together their slide shows for their presentations. We are almost there!

If anyone would like to help with paper mache, this is the week to come in!

Valentine's Day

To get ready for Valentine's Day, we have asked all of our scholars to make a Valentine box to bring to school. The box needs to fit 24 cards and small bags of treats that are sometimes handed out. Hello Middle School Parents!

Two weeks to go until Museum, Sunday, February 12, 2023. Students have been making good progress and most have finished their outlines and have begun the writing process, but we lost a day last week due to our Snow Day, so this week students are tasked with finishing the body and conclusion of their essays. We will dedicate normal Language Arts time as well as Choice Time for students to follow their outlines and work on their writing, which they are scheduled to finish by Wednesday. For the remainder of the week, students will work on the Display Elements of their boards and their board assembly, so it is imperative that all students bring their tri-fold boards to school ASAP if they have not already done so.

In Social Studies we will read about and explore the lives and contributions of significant African Americans as we begin the month of February.

In Math, Group A will continue their study of Unit Rates and Percentages by comparing speeds and prices. Students will decide who is traveling faster or which item is the better deal. Students will also multiply or divide by the unit rate to calculate missing values in a table of equivalent ratios. Group B will use tables to find missing values in a proportional relationship and use the distributive property to rewrite expressions. Students will also be able to understand that “half as much again” and “multiply by 3/2” mean the same thing. Group C will graph and solve systems of equations using algebra. Students will use the structure of the equations to determine how many solutions a system of equations has. They will also write systems of equations from real-world situations. All students will begin working on their graphs and charts for their Museum presentations.
