Principal's Message
Dear Medford Elementary Families:
We hope you were able to enjoy the amazing weather we had in September! However, we do live in Minnesota, and the cold weather will be here soon enough! Please note the important cold weather information below as well as our school cancellation policy information.
Winter Will be Arriving; Let's Be Prepared!
School Cancellation and Delay Information
Student Dismissal and Early Dismissal
Students are required to leave the building immediately upon dismissal (classroom dismissal times will be staggered) from school. Students who ride the bus should board the bus promptly after dismissal by a teacher. Students who walk or ride their bicycles should leave school grounds as soon as possible. Students who are waiting for parents, guardians, or baby-sitters to pick them up can wait by the Elementary office exit. Students are discouraged from being in the High School area at dismissal time.
The community will be notified through Radio Stations KDHL (920), KRFO (1390), and WCCO (830) as well as Television Stations 4, 5, 9 and 11 when weather conditions or other emergencies make it necessary to close school or start late. The Medford School District also uses an automated e-mail/voice service to communicate with families.
It is extremely important for families to have plans communicated well with their children in the event of an early dismissal at the beginning of each school year.

Flexible Learning Days at Medford Elementary
What is a Flex Learning Day?
Medford Public Schools uses Flexible Learning Days so students can still be engaged in learning on inclement weather (snow) days. We also have a built in Flexible Learning Day on November 27th. On a Flex day, students in grades K-12 will continue learning from home with support from their teachers instead of going into school. Teachers will share curriculum-aligned assignments and be accessible by email during regular school hours so they can provide learning support to students. In other words, students would still have school even if inclement weather prevented them from being in the school building. Therefore, these days would count as a student contact day and would not have to be made up at a later date. The learning activities may include enrichment assignments, extensions to a current lesson or continuation of acquiring concepts and skills.
The announcement to transition to a flexible learning day will be made between 5:15 a.m - 5:30 a.m. the morning of. Ideally based on weather forecasts, we will prepare our students the prior day before they leave school with essential materials. The actual announcement will come in the form of an email and voicemail shortly after the decision is made. IT IS VITAL THAT YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION IS UP TO DATE IN OUR SYSTEM. Please check with the elementary or high school office and verify that your contact information is current. The message will also be on our webpage and posted on all MN news stations under their School Closing tabs.
Why Do We Have Flex Days?
The benefits of Flex Days include keeping everyone safe and off the roads when there are poor conditions, allowing for the continuation of learning when school is closed due to weather, and building skills that will be beneficial for students’ future success. Additionally, Flex Days make it more likely that the district will not have to schedule make-up days during the school year or add days to the end of the year due to inclement weather.
Flex Day Checklists for Students and Families
On a Flex day, students and families can refer to the following checklists to ensure they know how to access learning activities to do at home and what will happen at school after a Flex Day. Teachers will be available via email to answer any questions during a Flex Day from 8:00am-3:00pm.
