AUSD Connection
Alhambra Unified School District News for Parents
Volume I, Issue 4 - November 18, 2022
Message from the Superintendent
Dear AUSD Families,
This time of year, we get the opportunity to take a moment to reflect and to focus on the good in our lives. I am deeply thankful for your partnership in your child’s educational experience and mindful of the sacrifice, dedication, and love you have for your child and family.
One of the biggest gifts you are giving to your child is in the ways you help create a spirit of community, connection, and belonging in their classrooms, in their schools, and around our district. At the heart of all academic and life success is learning the art of navigating relationships with grace and compassion.
Your relationship-building willingness to seek common ground, see a situation from the perspective of others, and take note of how aspects of the situation may affect others is one of the most important skills we can model for our children.
It is an honor to work in a community that so values children, education, and relationships.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends.
With warmest gratitude,
Denise R. Jaramillo, Superintendent

EVENT HIGHLIGHT: EQUITY SUMMIT
On October 31st, Alhambra Unified School District certificated staff members gathered at Alhambra High School and San Gabriel High School to embrace equity, diversity, and inclusion at the AUSD Equity Summit. It was a day filled with intellectually engaging sessions to inspire our staff to grow personally and professionally. Sessions featured nationally-recognized experts, along with our own amazing home-grown AUSD staff presenters. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and we look forward to the "next steps" as we work together to create a community where differences are respected, valued, and celebrated. Special shout-out to Dr. Lily Jarvis and the Educational Services division for such a well-organized and powerful event!

COVID Testing Kits for the Holiday Breaks
Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) and the Department of Public Health (DPH) recommend COVID testing kits be distributed to students with the holiday breaks coming up. Kits were distributed to students this week. Each box includes two tests: one is recommended to be taken prior to your child's return from Thanksgiving break on November 28, 2022, and the second prior to your child's return from winter break on January 9, 2023.
Please Note: Results do NOT need to be submitted to the school/District; these kits are being distributed per LACOE/DPH recommendation.
Have you received a notice from OneHealth Telemedicine?
Some of you have recently received an email or written communication from OneHealth Telemedicine about COVID testing and payment checks you may have received from your insurance carrier. These checks are intended to be forwarded to the provider, OneHealth Telemedicine. Please follow the instructions below to forward payments to the provider:
- Make copies of checks for your records.

Small Spotlights
Little Bits of Good News & Information from Around the District
Brightwood principal Mrs. Candace Griego & assistant principal Dr. Monica Solorzano agreed to get "slimed" by the students if they made their "Fun Run" PTA fundraising goal of $50,000! The students SURPASSED that goal, so the administrators kept their promise!
Last month, students gathered together for the District's 10th annual Woodworking contest. Although this is considered a "friendly competition," there were serious stakes as the contest determined who qualified to compete in the SkillsUSA-CA Regional Conference. Thank you to woodworking teachers Paul Lam (MKHS), John Mason (SGHS), and Carlos Sanchez (AHS).
SGHS was honored to be a small part of the memorial service for El Monte Police Chief Ben Lowry, a fellow Matador from the Class of 1995, who lost his courageous battle with cancer last month. If you would like to donate to his memorial fund, please click HERE. All proceeds go directly to Chief Lowry's widow to assist with funeral expenses and raising their children.
Did you know fourth graders can get FREE access for their entire family to 19 California state parks? Apply HERE to receive your California State Parks Adventure Pass!
Thank you to everyone who came out for this year's ALHAMBRA PUMPKIN RUN and help raise funds for the Alhambra Educational Foundation. Special shout-out to Ramona School who had a total of 36 staff members, students, and parents on their team!
