NEW WORKSHOP
Livestock Achievement Program 2023
Livestock Achievement Program is an additional opportunity for enrolled livestock project youth, is designed to promote all educational aspects of 4-H livestock projects including selection, production, leadership, and exhibition by recognizing youth striving to improve in their livestock project knowledge and leadership.
The program recognizes Members of Excellence across all 4-H livestock project areas, including: beef, sheep, meat goat, swine, dairy cattle, dairy goat, rabbit, and poultry.
The program consists of two levels that require 4-H members to plan and report a broad range of age-appropriate and project-related accomplishments. For each level, the Livestock Achievement Program provides a list of accomplishments from which 4-H members choose their goals. Each accomplishment is worth a specific number of points. Intermediates, ages 10-13, must complete 100 points worth of activities to receive the distinction of Intermediate Member of Excellence. Seniors, ages 14-18, must complete 150 points worth of activities to receive the distinction of Senior Member of Excellence. The Plan and Reports, linked on the webpage, show examples of the project related accomplishments they can choose, or they can identify their own with approval of their local educator.
Applications/Sign up are due June 15th through the application form link on the website. Participants should work on their yearly plan and set their goals at the beginning of starting the program. Plan and Reports, as well as Project Records are due August 1st and sent to 4hlivestockachievement@unl.edu *note this is a change in process from previous years. Youth completing the achievement program and receiving member of excellence recognition in the various species will be recognized during the Parade of Champions, 4-H weekend at the Nebraska State Fair.

FAVORITE FOODS REVUE- June 8th
The Favorite Foods Revue combines food preparation, menu planning, and table setting skills. 4-H members participating in the Favorite Foods Revue need to plan a menu suitable for an indoor or outdoor meal. The 4-H member should prepare one food item, which should be brought along to the Revue with the selected table service, centerpiece, menu card, recipe card, and card table/picnic blanket. 4-H members enrolled in any 4-H foods project are eligible to participate.
The Favorite Foods Revue will be Thursday, June 8th, with set up beginning at
6:30 p.m. The Revue is at the Kimmel Center in Syracuse. Pre-register by Thursday, June 1st by calling the Extension Office at 402-269-2301. Clover Kids are also eligible for this project.
Culinary Challenge
The 4-H Culinary Challenge Contest will require youth to demonstrate healthy decision making through nutrition, food preparation, menu planning, and food safety, utilizing foods and nutrition curriculum. They will apply healthy living knowledge and skills by planning a nutritious menu, demonstrating their understanding of time management skills in the kitchen, and expressing their originality and creativity through an appropriate themed and properly set table. To showcase these skills, youth will create a menu, prepare a food item, and choose an appropriate theme for their occasion while expressing their food, nutrition, and food safety knowledge during a live interview with a judge at the contest. In order to highlight knowledge and skills acquired during pre-contest preparation, youth will utilize technology as part of their interview.
Rules
Winners at the Favorite Foods contest may advance to the 4-H Culinary Challenge Contest, but participation at the county level is not required. The 4-H’er must be enrolled in a Foods and Nutrition project to enter the Contest. Each County is eligible to submit up to 4 teams of two 4-H members for the 4-H Culinary Challenge Contest State Fair 4-H Foods Event to be held during the Nebraska State Fair. Selection of such eligible teams shall be at the discretion of the county.
STATE CONTEST
County teams of two 4-H members will have the opportunity to advance to the 4-H Culinary Challenge Contest, which will be held the first weekend of the Nebraska State Fair. Teams will be determined by the oldest 4-H’ers age and will be placed as follows: Intermediate – ages 9 - 13; and Senior – ages 14 - 18.
CHALLENGE INGREDIENT/ITEM
A challenge ingredient will be selected each year, highlighting a Nebraska commodity food product. The 2023 challenge ingredient is SUNFLOWERS. Please keep food safety in mind when selecting the recipe used for the Challenge. Foods must be able to be kept chilled during transport to the contest, then be able to be re-heated in a microwave if needed. Each team must incorporate the challenge ingredient into their food item they will be presenting during the contest. This may require altering a recipe or creatively incorporating an item into their overall table theme. The challenge ingredient must also be included in the interview presentation, demonstrating youth knowledge of the ingredient, such as nutritional value, a farm-to-fork concept, or how to adapt a recipe to include the ingredient.
Save the Date! June 26- Livestock Showmanship Clinic at Kimmel ....
