Weekly Updates
Dear Hózhó Families,
I hope everyone was able to enjoy the Thanksgiving break. We have a special request for our families that would help our school. December 1st is bus transportation day. Twice a year, the state takes attendance on the bus (both to and from school) to determine funding. This Friday, December 1st is one of those days! Please, if your child is signed up to take bus transportation, please have your child ride the bus on Friday. As an encouragement and appreciation, we will give out prizes and larger prizes will be raffled off. Students must ride the bus both ways that day to get entered into the drawings. The greater the participation, the greater the funding for our bus program. Please help us by having your child ride the bus to and from school on December 1st. Thank you!
Holiday Craft Fair - Saturday, December 2nd, will be our annual Holiday Craft Fair, 11 AM - 3 PM in the gymnasium. If you are interested in being a vendor, click here to fill out the form and return it to the front office.

Meet our Staff Members
I enjoy hiking, nature photography, writing poetry, cooking, and playing the recorder and saxophone. Three words to describe me would be inquisitive, creative, and dedicated. My favorite book is Jack Kerouac’s Dharma Bums. I love Ryokan’s poetry collection One Robe, One Bowl. And my favorite Primary Phonics book is The Cod and the Fat Cat. A fun fact about me is that I have lived in three foreign countries—France, Burkina Faso, and Mali—and eight US states—New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Georgia, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New Mexico. My husband’s family lives in Nagaland, India. As a child in France, I ate snails and pigeons. I ate sautéed lizards and fried termites in Africa and fried silkworms in Northeast India.

Silent Final E Part One!
Did you know there are six reasons why an English word could have a silent letter E at the end (or even the middle) of a word? You may have even heard your child talk about the "Silent Final E" rules. By the end of 3rd grade, Hozho students can recognize and recite the silent final E rules in any given word. Let's start with the first two!
Silent Final E Job #1: Vowel Consonant E; The E makes the vowel say its name
Often times, when a consonant follows a vowel, it forces the vowel to say its first (or its 'short') sound, such as the sound /a/ for the letter A. However, if that consonant is followed by a silent final E, the vowel says its second sound (or its name). We mark this by underlining the vowel (because it is saying its name), we underline the consonant the E is 'skipping' over, and we double underline the E because it is silent, marking it with a one because it is doing job one.

Silent Final E Job #2: V or U, think job 2!
English words do not end with a V or a U so we add a silent final E. We mark this by underlining the v or u at the end of a word and then double underlining the silent final E. We then mark the E with a 2.
H a v e2
B l u e2
Now sometimes, when practicing this rule, I ask my students, "but what about Tiramisu?" and they respond, "It's not an English word!!"
The wording we use when teaching our students, the rules of the English language is very intentional. English words do not end with a v or a u, but sometimes we use words from other languages where this rule would not apply.
Tune in next week for Jobs 3 and 4!
