LCPS COMMITMENT TO EQUITY
LCPS centers equity as one of its foundational core values. For our community, equity means being committed to providing a safe, supportive, inclusive, affirming, and respectful environment for each student and staff member that fosters success, growth, and academic rigor.
The cultivation of this environment requires us to reject and condemn the use of hate speech, racial slurs, antisemitism, and any action or behavior that discriminates based on race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, orientation, gender expression, socio-economic status, religion, ability, or other cultural identities or expression. Such noninclusive speech, behavior, and actions do not reflect who we are as a learning community.
We embrace and value the unique identities, backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and needs of each student and employee. Celebrating our diversity is important and helps define us as a school division. Demonstrating the courage to address inequities and remove barriers represents an integral part of our collective effort towards excellence in education. Equity is the vehicle that leads to greater access, opportunity, and equality so that each student is
empowered to make meaningful contributions to the world.
ALL IN FOR STUDENTS!
Dear Parents,
LCPS will offer tutoring in reading and math for selected students in grades 3 through 8 as part of the Virginia Department of Education’s All In VA plan. On January 23, 2024 Evergreen Mill Elementary School will begin providing high dosage tutoring in reading and math for select students who qualify based on a review of standardized data points including SOL tests in reading and math taken in the spring of 2023, the Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA), and the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP). Our staff, under my direction and the leadership of our Academic Dean Mr. Huey, is currently working through a detailed process to identify which students we feel would most benefit from high dosage tutoring in reading and math beginning in January.
Some of our students in grades 3-5 have been identified as in need of additional support based on their SOL or VGA scores, however their MAP scores and all other indicators based on their daily academic performance do not indicate a need for high dosage tutoring for a variety of reasons. Other students in grades 3-5 who have been identified as in need of additional support will be recommended for high dosage tutoring beginning in January. Regardless of whether or not your child has been recommended for tutoring, if your child was identified based upon the state criteria, you will be informed.
If your child was identified based upon these criteria, you will receive a letter from me in early January that will indicate whether or not your child is being recommended for high dosage tutoring. That letter will provide all the details you will need to know about how these services will be provided at Evergreen Mill. Please note that parents will have the option to decline these tutoring services for their child. Additionally, all students, regardless of whether or not they have been identified to receive tutoring services, will have access to free online services. For more information about LCPS plans for All In VA tutoring and the free services available to LCPS families, please visit www.lcps.org/tutoringva. You may also want to review our October newsletter which provides additional information about how we already provided targeted intervention to many of our students during the school day.
Please take a few minutes to view the video below for additional information about how this program will apply to third through fifth grade students at Evergreen Mill. In addition, I will hold a parent information session at 6:30 PM on January 8th to provide additional information regarding this initiative. You may also attend that parent information session virtually at this link.
Expecting Success!

IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THE EMES HOUSE SYSTEM!
The addition of the House System as a major component of our Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports (PBIS) practices has been a fruitful and engaging one for students and staff. As with all new initiatives, we are constantly monitoring, gathering feedback, and reflecting on how to make things even better for our students. Our PBIS committee meets monthly to review our entire system and to recommend changes. During our November and December meetings we were especially reflective about our House System. As a result, the following changes are being instituted upon our return to school in January.
- We will shift from weekly to monthly house meetings on one Tuesday per month.
- Students and staff are to wear their house shirts on the dates of their monthly house meetings.
- Our new monthly house meetings will be cross grade level meetings were students from grades K-5 will meet together as a house.
- Monthly house meetings will incorporate a short focus lesson, house pride activities, and a special monthly house challenge or activity.
The dates for our monthly House Meetings are listed below. These will be well publicized to students and weekly in the Sunday Scoop for parents.

THE SPELLING BEE IS COMING TO EMES!

At the school Spelling Bee Championship we will crown our school champion and a runner up who will then move on to compete in the county-wide competition on March 21, 2024 at Independence HS.
