Bonham High School Board Report
January 18, 2023

Welcome Back... and lets get to work!
Our BHS staff came back and went right to work as our BHS administrative team began our in-service activities on Monday. It was a day full of learning, fellowship and above all teamwork as we covered our vision for the year to Race to the Top!
Hear No Zeros... See NO Zeros... Speak NO Zeros!
In reviewing our student achievement and progress toward our overall goal to became an "A" campus one thing has continued to be a hinderance... APATHY!
The last few years of teaching have seen an unprecedented shift in student behavior. While many mental health crisis have been brought to the forefront, apathy has had a profoundly negative impact on our students and their academic success. As we continue our assault upon absenteeism, we must step up our efforts to combat apathy. Whether it be not turning in work, work that is incomplete, incorrect, or done with minimal effort, a general attitude of not caring is sweeping secondary schools across our nation and BHS is not immune. We are ready to step up to the task at hand to ensure our students will create the characteristics of successful people. To change this mindset we will no longer hear a grade of zero, speak of a grade of zero or see a grade of zero!
Our new 9th hour, or "No Zero Zone" as we affectionately call it will begin our first full week back on campus. Students who do not turn in work will be required to notify their parents of a thirty minute mandatory tutorial to be held on Tuesday's and Thursday's after school. Twenty four hours notice will be given to all parents to make the necessary arrangements for their student to attend, but once assigned, there is no getting out of it! If they complete their assignment after being assigned 9th hour, they will be required to attend their 9th hour assignment and complete one session of either IXL Reading or Math. We will continue to give all students the required time to turn in assignments due to absences, however if a student does not put forth any effort, a zero will never be given, another 9th hour will be. If students fall 60% for their subjects at progress report times they will also be required to attend tutorials. Our teachers will enter an "I" in their gradebooks for work that has makeup days and an "M" for missing work. Our students are not Zeroes and as we Race to the Top, our gradebooks will no longer have anything that identifies them as such!
FFA and CTE Updates
2023 - 2024 School Year
Mindset change - scheduling for a program of study vs. endorsement.
If we create the master schedule and schedule students for programs of study, students will complete programs of study AND earn endorsements.
Scheduling for an Endorsement area doesn’t necessarily ensure “completers” in the various programs of study.
Increase CTE opportunities for our upper-level students
Eliminate default of multidisciplinary endorsement - no CTE pathway associated with this endorsement
Utilize on an as needed basis for students with unique circumstances.
Changes to current programs of study
High School Level
Agriculture Mechanics and Metal Technologies/Lab to Agriculture Structures Design & Fabrication (Level 2 to Level 3)
Generates an increase in funding of approximately $12,090.
Increases access to Level 3 and 4 courses to facilitate program of study completion
Landscape Design/Turf Management to Horticulture (Level 2 to Level 3)
Generates an increase in funding of approximately $6,960
Increases access to Level 3 and 4 courses to facilitate program of study completion
Utilize iCEV for plant science certification (new certification)
Practicum in Agriculture added as 4th Level to all Ag programs (Level 4 to Level 4)
Additional funds generated in recapture of “early out” students to work based learning experiences (credit) Funding recaptured is approximately $1,450 per student/per period
Currently have 6 students who qualify
The number of periods each student qualifies for will depend on job placement and hours worked.
Provides flexibility in student scheduling
Students without jobs can be placed in-house at the barn or in greenhouse
Fundamentals of Computer Science to AP Computer Science Principles (Level 1 to Level 2)
Both courses are weighted the same
Increases access to AP courses - Can be taken by Freshman as a good AP introductory course
Allows students to satisfy the LOTE requirement for graduation with two computer science courses.
Allows us to offer a complete pathway for Programming and Software Development and incorporate our Tech Aides into a practicum work based learning program.
Update outdated A+ Curriculum - can be used in both Programming and Software and Engineering Pathways
Tech Aides to Practicum in STEM (Local Credit to Level 4)
Generates an increase in funding of approximately $3,184
Gives students a credit towards graduation and completion of program of study
In-house placement for work based learning on campus and at district level.
Change Robotics Pathway to Engineering Pathway from Advanced Manufacturing
Levels of courses stay the same - just PEIMS changes and few minor changes in curriculum.
Encourages our upper level students to complete a pathway
Potential for Fusion 360 industry based certifications
More flexibility in the Practicum of STEM course option.
Still allows for students to compete in BEST Robotics
Change Exercise Science Career Prep to Practicum of Entrepreneurship
Difference in definition and requirements for career prep and practicum. We were doing a practicum type course in a career prep course. (Cleans up some paperwork)
Both courses are on the same level - no extra funds generated, however it does allow us to generate funds through in-house placements for students with early out.
Allows us more flexibility in student scheduling
Change Yearbook to Graphic Design - Change made last year
Local Credit to Level 2 and 3 depending on the # of years student in the program.
Allows students to take Yearbook all four years, complete a pathway, and earn endorsement.
(This year) - Utilize Adobe InDesign to allow for an industry based certification.
Junior High Level
Art 2 at Junior High to Digital Media (Non CTE to Level 1)
Generates an increase in funding of approximately $5,933
Feeds into the Graphic Design - Yearbook Program of study at High School Level
Provides opportunity for students to work on the yearbook, announcements, etc during class for Junior High.
Last year for BIM -
Does not feed into any program of study at high school level
Any IBC earned through this program does not give students a CCMR point - Not complete program of study.
Working with campus principals to determine alternative for class; possible changes include moving to Digital Media or restructuring class to add Principles of Education and Training
Changes made for this current school year could potentially generate approximately $42,000 additional funds. (Based on CTE FTEs, 169 day calendar, and perfect attendance - $37,800 based on 90% attendance)
2024-2025 School Year
Phase in new graduation plans - eliminating requirement for all students to take World Geography and World History. (Multidisciplinary Endorsement)
Utilize Multidisciplinary endorsement on an as needed basis for students with unique circumstances.
Phase in Education and Training classes - potential start at Junior High
Phase in Animal Science Pathway within Ag Program.
Survey students in Principles of Ag classes to determine interest.
Would be a restructure of the program giving students not interested in the welding pathway, but are taking it for “Ag” class another avenue to pursue
Allow growth and work for showing teams and LDE teams
Principles of Hospitality Level 1 Course (possible restructure)
consider allowing freshmen into culinary arts program to prevent gap year between courses
Allow students who took Principles of Hospitality to go straight into Culinary Arts
Cosmetology - (possible restructure)
Evaluate the program and determine if it would be beneficial to add a freshman level course.
Consider adding a freshman level course for the 24-25 school year.
Endorsement Areas and associated CTE Pathways
Business and Industry Applied Agricultural Engineering (Welding)
Plant Science
Animal Science*
Graphic Design - Yearbook
Culinary Arts
Programming and Software Development**⌃
Engineering** (Robotics)
Public Service Cosmetology and Personal Care Services
Exercise and Wellness**
Teaching and Training*
STEM Engineering** (Robotics)

* Pathway would be a new pathway for the 24-25 school year.
** Pathway satisfies requirements for TWO endorsement areas.
