Principal's Message
Dear Families,
Congratulations to our outstanding Panther scholars who were recognized this past week for their academic achievements. Nearly 500 students earned Honor Roll (3.5-3.79 GPA) or Principal's Honor Roll status (3.8-4.0 GPA). This is an incredible accomplishment and we are so proud of our students! We also recognize that this does not happen without a strong home/school partnership so a big thank you to our families and teaching staff for supporting our students and nuturing their academic success!
Also a huge shout out to our Pershing Foundation and in particular the Foundation's Sixth Grade Camp Coordinators Erika Ohnesorgen and Mandy Wolff - we received word this week that we have enough funds to fully cover the expense of 6th Grade Camp for our students! This is an incredible accomplishment, particularly when you consider we have 80 more sixth graders at Pershing than we did last year! Thank you Erika and Mandy for your tireless work to make 6th Grade Camp a reality for our sixth graders!
And finally, February is Black History Month. It is a time for honoring contributions made by Black Americans to the development of our culture, our community, and our nation as a whole. San Diego Unified is committed to uplifting the stories, achievements and voices of Black people and educating students on the invaluable contributions, struggles and triumphs that Black Americans have had in shaping our nation.
The Board of Education recently reaffirmed its commitment to that mission by passing a resolution honoring Black History Month, proclaiming "our ongoing commitment to fostering an anti-racist, anti-biased and restorative district for all students."
In celebrating the achievements of Black Americans, and recognizing their central role in our nation's history, we encourage you to learn more by exploring the Black History Month Resource Guide
Sincerely,
Melanie Kray
ENCORE ICAC PARENT PRESENTATION ON FEB 15
Pershing MIddle School in collaboration with the Pershing Foundation has invited our local law enforcement to come back for an encore of their Internet Crimes Against Children Presentation for any family in the Henry Cluster. The presentation will be held at 9:00 AM on February 15. We are seeing a significant uptick in social media use among children in middle school and even elementary school. Law enforcement provides some incredibly useful info for parents about the the things to watch out for as well and resources to help parents help their children navigate phones, social media, and the digital age we know live in . Click on the ICAC flyer for more details.
PERSHING SELECTED FOR NAEP TESTING
Pershing Middle has been selected to participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on Thursday, February 15, 2024. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. NAEP is different from our state assessments because it is a common measure of achievement across the country. The results are released as The Nation's Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents/guardians, policymakers, and the public. One hundred of our 8th graders will be randomly selected to take the NAEP. If your 8th grader is one of the students randomly slected for testing you will be receiving an email notificiation this week. If you do not receive an email notification about NAEP your child has not been randomly selected.
CALIFORNIA HEALTHY KIDS SURVEY FOR PARENTS:
Families please take a moment to complete the parent survey for this year's California Healthy Kids Survey. The information you provide is critical and helps our site determine areas of need and how to allocate resources. Our goal is 80% parent participation:

SPORTS PHOTOS FOR THE YEARBOOK
Yearbook needs your help. We are including the Pershing sports teams in the yearbook but we need pictures. If you happen to have any pictures that we can use, please sent them our way. We have plenty of track pictures. We are still in need of both girls and boys basketball as well as the new sports that are starting, soccer and volleyball. You can email your photos to sruckle@sandi.net. Any photos you have will be helpful. Thanks in advance for your help and support.
Our Pershing Panthers continue to impress week in and week out on the athletic fields.
Our Girls Soccer earned two more wins this weekend with their victories over Standley and Correia. Our Boys Soccer team ended the weekend with two ties against tough competitors in Marshall and Muirlands.
Our Girls Volleyball team ended the weekend with two more victories against Pacific Beach and Correia. Our Boys Volleyball team competed hard but fell short against Muirlands and Lewis.
All four teams remain on track for middle school playoffs. Congrats on another great weekend!
