IB Biology and the Internal Assessment
Students in IB Biology are tasked with finding a topic in Biology that interests them and then pursuing a semester long independent investigation into the topic. Students drive the design and analysis decisions for their project and watch a spark of an idea turn into a full blown research project. Year 2 IB student, Naomy Lafond read an article last year about the concept of ‘Hidden Hunger’. Hidden hunger occurs when soil depletion results in a crop of food that is lacking in nutrients. This is a serious concern in many developing countries. Here is what Naomy had to say about the investigation she designed to explore solutions to the problem of hidden hunger.
"For my biology IA, I decided to investigate how the concentration of sulfur affects the vertical growth of cherry tomatoes. Sulfur is an important mineral that plants require to form their enzymes, proteins and take in sunlight energy. A control of 0ppm and concentrations of 20, 40, 60, and 100ppm were given to 6 different plants over 5 weeks. The null hypothesis was rejected as higher concentrations of sulfur demonstrated the most growth. Hidden hunger occurs when there is a lack of vitamins and minerals in the food people eat to meet their nutrient requirements. Tomatoes are a great source of nutrients and minerals for humans, however, due
to crop degradation in low-income countries sulfur deficiency is often present which is why it inspired me to do this experiment."
Naomy’s hope is to learn enough about enriching soils in cost effective ways that she can develop inexpensive fertilizers that could curb the effect of hidden hunger.
Teacher Feature
Mrs. Peloso
Here are a few interesting facts about Mrs. Peloso, in her own words:
"Like most teachers I love the 'Aha moment'. The exciting moment when a student pieces together all of the little components of their learning to make true meaning of your course. I love seeing it and hearing it. I love watching students experiencing something new in science and hearing comments like "that is so cool!". I often wonder how much of that excitement makes it home to family and friends.
I love food and I love to cook.
My favourite pastime is to attend live music events and I can't wait for that to return to my life. All live music is great music!
I have a twin sister who is a math teacher.
I teach grade 9 science and IB Biology. I am the Program Leader of Science and I am the staff member in charge of the NEO Kids committee.
Biology Holiday Activity
Grade 7 Pen Pals
From Ms. Sivazlian's Grade 7 Class:
We were very excited to have the opportunity to work with Pen Pals who live in Edmonton! We have been patiently awaiting their letters and this week they finally came in!
For the past few days, we have been hard at work drafting, revising, editing, and writing our responses. We are supper excited to create friendships with students a few provinces away! Stay tuned for more on this story as our friendships develop.
Lots of Leading Going on in the Leadership Class!
What have our leadership students been up to? Leadership students have been busy this week running events for our school community.
Intermediate Basketball Clinic
Callum, Anthony, Charlie and George have been busy running a basketball clinic for our intermediate students every Tuesday and Thursday after school.
OFSAA Try Day - Pickleball
Carling, CC, Jill and Sophie G. applied and received OFSAA Try Day grants. The girls spent this week introducing Pickleball to our grade 9 english and french immersion classes. The girls have ordered outdoor equipment so the sport can be run all year at Lo-Ellen Park. They plan to run an outdoor Spring event in the new year.
Yoga
Jessica, Sophie M., Maika and Mia have been running Intramural Yoga on Wednesdays and Fridays at lunch. Come join the fun!
Basketball Clinic for our Life Skills students
Rhys, Ally, Charlotte and Sophie M. have been having a blast organizing fun basketball activities for Ms. Gielselman's students.
Futsal
Dax, Ethan, Carter and Patrick wrap up Intramural Futsal this week. Stay tuned for the playoff matches!
Spirit Wear - As indicated on the online order form, Spirit Wear will be delivered to the school next week. Emma and Kayla will be packaging up orders. Orders should be ready for distribution by Tuesday, December 15th.
