Happy New Year and welcome to 2022! The staff and I hope that the Hathaway community had a peaceful, safe and wonderful Winter Break! We are all looking forward to seeing you soon and hearing about you spent your break!

There has been a lot happening in our community and world related to COVID-19 and the Omicron variant. Please read below for important information and reminders

We start the year off right Monday, January 3rd, at 8:05 am!

Students should not come to school if they have any COVID-19 related Symptoms such as:

• Runny Nose/Congestion

• Cough

• Sore Throat

• Headache

• Fatigue/Muscle or Body Aches

• Fever above 99.5 degrees

• Loss of Smell/Taste

• Difficulty Breathing

Remember that every Wednesday of the year is an early release day. Kindergarteners dismiss at 11:26 am and ALL other grades First - Fifth dismiss at 1:02 pm.

Hathaway community, FREE at home COVID test kits for students available at Hathaway!

Distribution will take place between 1:00pm-3:30pm at Hathaway Library’s BACK DOOR.

• Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade, Tuesday, January 11
• 3rd, 4th and 5th grade, Wednesday, January 12
• All Students: Thursday, January 13
• All Students: Friday, January 14

Hathaway community, the Hueneme Elementary District is in frequent contact with Ventura County Public Health (VCPH) and the Ventura County Office of Education (VCOE) regarding new and updated information as it relates to the health and safety of Hathaway students, staff and community.

Dear HESD Community,

We had a successful day distributing the at-home Covid-19 antigen test kits on Sunday. For families who were not able to pick up test kits on Sunday, the test kits are available for pick up this week at your child’s school. Principals will share school specific pick-up information. Each test kit contains two tests.

Last Friday we received updated COVID-19 guidance from Ventura County Public Health. The new guidance allows at-home antigen test kits to be used to reduce or end the isolation or quarantine period for COVID-19 positive or symptomatic students. Isolation and quarantine are defined as follows:

• Isolation means you have a positive COVID-19 diagnosis.

• Quarantine means you have been exposed, and you do not know yet if you are COVID-19 positive yet.

  
  

If families feel that their student is now cleared to end isolation or quarantine based on an-at home test kit result, please write your student’s name, date of birth, and test date on the test cassette and have a photo (or the cassette) ready for the health office.

As a reminder, at no time is it acceptable to send students to school when they are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, and especially if they have received a positive test result (laboratory based OR at-home test). Please make sure to report all positive cases to your students’ school.

Below are a few scenarios based on the January 7, 2022 VCPH guidance.

SCENARIO 1 - STUDENT HAS A CONFIRMED CASE OF COVID-19:

The current 10-day isolation period for students who have a confirmed case of Covid-19 will remain at 10 days unless BOTH of the following conditions are met:

• The school is provided with negative test results from ANY Covid-19 test (including at-home Covid-19 antigen test kits) taken on day 5 after exposure or later, AND

• The student's Covid-19 symptoms are improving.

This will reduce the length of the quarantine period to 5 days and they can return on day 6. If a family chooses NOT to test their student, the quarantine period will remain at 10 days.

SCENARIO 2 - STUDENT IS A CLOSE CONTACT WITH SOMEONE OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL BUT NOT IN THEIR HOUSEHOLD WHO HAS A CONFIRMED CASE OF COVID-19:

Students who are at home for being a close contact with a confirmed Covid-19 case outside of school but not in their household will remain at home for 10 days unless:

• Your school is provided with negative test results from ANY Covid-19 test (including these at-home Covid-19 antigen test kits) taken on Day 5 or later, AND

• The student is asymptomatic.

The student can then return to school on Day 8, OR

• If the student is fully vaccinated they are allowed to be at school unless they develop symptoms. They must test on day 5 after COVID exposure.

  
  

SCENARIO 3 - STUDENT IS CLOSE CONTACT WITH SOMEONE IN THEIR HOUSEHOLD:

• Students will quarantine at home and can test on day 10 after the first day of COVID exposure to the household member (any test accepted). They must have had NO symptoms and if the test on day 10 is negative then can return to school on day 15, OR

• If the student is fully vaccinated they are allowed to be at school unless they develop symptoms. They must test on day 5 after COVID exposure.

  
  

SCENARIO 4 - STUDENT HAS COVID-19 SYMPTOMS:

If a student has Covid-19 symptoms, to return to school the student will need:

• To be fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication; and

• other symptoms have improved; and

• ONE of the following:

  • Confirm alternate diagnosis, with a doctor note OR

  • A negative result from any COVID-19 test (including at-home Covid-19 antigen test kits)

Without a negative test result, the at home quarantine period will remain at 10 days.

Two testing locations:

• Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays: Blackstock Junior High School, 701 E. Bard Road
• Tuesdays and Thursdays: Haycox Elementary School, 5400 Perkins Road

Testing hours are 10:00 am. - 3:45 pm. at each location. Both testing sites are walk-up only, no appointments necessary.

Martin Luther King Day is observed every year on the third Monday of January — on January 17 this year. King was an influential civil rights leader — best known for his work on racial equality and ending racial segregation in the United States. His life and achievements are remembered and celebrated on this day.

Each year on the third Monday of January we observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and reflect on the work that still needs to be done for racial equality. This January 17, make the holiday more than just a day off and take time to reflect and take action on civil rights issues across the globe.

All K-12 students in California now have free access to a huge library of digital books to help improve literacy and build a love for reading.

The California Department of Education has partnered with Renaissance Learning to make their myON digital library free for the months of December and January. The myON library has thousands of books for all grade levels in English and Spanish that can be read on computers, tablets and phones.

Let’s work together to ensure that our students are in a safe and secure learning environment. Here are a few tips for students and parents to keep in mind as they spend time online.

Students

• Don’t make irresponsible, frightening, or threatening posts on your online accounts as they will likely result in serious legal and school disciplinary action.
• NEVER forward or re-post an inappropriate or threatening post or message that you see or receive online.
• Instead, report that post and/or message to an adult and/or school staff member immediately.
• Encourage your friends to be responsible internet and social media users.

Parents

• Be familiar with your child’s online activity, including all social media accounts.
• Don’t be afraid to “follow” or “friend” your kids on their personal social media channels.
• Talk to your kids regularly about their use of the internet and social media and create a safe environment for your children to report internet activity or online posts/messages that make them uncomfortable.
• Be aware of the consequences (legal and school-based) of inappropriate use of the internet, including forwarding or re-posting of inappropriate or threatening content, to your child and your family.
• Report inappropriate or threatening online content immediately to law enforcement or school staff.

Hathaway community, please ensure that our students arrive to campus no later than 8 am. Arriving on time allows students time to walk to their line and be ready to be picked up by their teacher. Students should be in their seats by 8:05 am. Students arriving after 8:05 are marked marked tardy.

Reminder to all that we will be continuing to practice safety first for all staff and students:
