ABC Student Featured in “Every Student Succeeding”

Congratulations to Ashlynn-Smith Asharri from Cerritos High, who was recently featured by the Association of California School Administrators “Every Student Succeeding” program. From shelters to motels to nights in the family car, Ashlynn has lacked a stable place to call home. And yet, you would never know it in the way she carries herself. Teachers describe her as a “model student.” And this fall, she’s headed to Cal State Long Beach, where she plans to major in marine biology.

Bullying Prevention

We all play an important role in preventing bullying. Parents, school staff, and other adults can help kids prevent bullying by talking about it. According to StopBullying.gov, when adults respond quickly and consistently to bullying behavior, they send the message that it is unacceptable, which can stop bullying behavior. Attendance Matters!

September is Attendance Awareness Month. Every absence is a missed day of learning. Let's work together to make daily attendance a top priority. Too many absences, excused or unexcused, can keep students from succeeding in school and in life. How many are too many? 10% of the school year, that's 18 missed days or 2 days a month, can knock students off track.

Summer Student Writer Winners

Last summer, ABCUST, in partnership with TutorZone, hosted an enrichment program for 7th and 9th-grade students focused on writing. The culmination of the program was a writing contest. We’re proud to announce the winners of the program in this video.

Bragg’s Green Team Recognized for Planting Trees

The Arbor Day Foundation, an international conservation, and education organization dedicated to making our world greener and healthier, recently named Bragg Elementary School in Cerritos as a 2021-2022 Tree Campus K-12. The Tree Campus K-12 program is designed to support primary, middle, and secondary school teachers and staff as they bring the benefits of trees to life both inside and outside the classroom. Schools must meet four goals to be named a Tree Campus K-12. The school must have a dedicated tree campus team and an education plan connecting students to trees and their global benefits. Students must also have hands-on experience and celebrate the meaning and history of Arbor Day.

In the program’s first year, Bragg Elementary was recognized for planting trees throughout campus and in neighborhoods across the region. They also sold trees to community members. The efforts were led by the school’s Green Team, a group of students who work on projects throughout the school year to make their campus more environmentally friendly. In past years, the Green Team has significantly reduced the usage of single-use water bottles and has implemented no-wast lunchtimes.

The ABCUSD Board of Education held a regular meeting on September 6, 2022, and took the following actions:

Heard a presentation about the ABC Adult School LVN program
Recognized recently promoted and newly hired administrators
Read and approved new Board Policies 0520 - Intervention in Underperforming Schools and 0520.1 - Comprehensive and Targeted School Improvement
Eliminated Board Policies and Administrative Regulations 0520.2 - Title I Program Improvement Schools and 0520.3 - Title I Program Improvement Districts
Approved a contract with Campus Safety Group
Approved unaudited actuals financial report for Fiscal Year 2021-2022
Adopted Resolution 22-12 Fund Balance Commitment
