Raleigh Hills Newsletter
December 11, 2020
Weekly Message
Dear Raleigh Hills Community,
Thank you so much for the decorations and treats that were provided by the PTO on Wednesday. We all felt so pampered as we were welcomed to school with beautiful banners and a delicious breakfast! We'd like to thank all the parents who were able to make this possible including Holly Magalen, Liz Delapoer, Shannon Walcott, Emily Monsere, Brittney Clark, Amanda Coen, and Allyson Austin. Thanks also to the many, many families who donated to the Winter Warm Up drive. We will be able to deliver much needed supplies this week.
I would like to direct your attention to the link below this message called Lessons from the Past. Click on the picture to hear the story of our very own PE teacher, Mr. Onishi. It describes how his parents and grandparents were sent to a Japanese internment camp during World War II. Watch as his daughters interview him about his parents' experiences and Jon's experiences with racism. Mr. Onishi will be sharing his family story and artifacts with the Japanese American Oregon Museum and with our entire district later in the Spring. We appreciate Jon bravely sharing his story with us and with you. It is through learning about our past that we inform our choices in the present.
This will be the final newsletter for 2020. I am wishing your family health and happiness in the new year. Be safe!
Warmly,
Jennifer

Tech News - Zoom Tip
I recently learned a new trick to try if you are having problems with Zoom. Try using it in your browser instead of using the Zoom app. Here are the steps to follow:
Joining a Zoom meeting from the browser
After clicking on a Zoom link, the Zoom app will open on the Chromebook
Close the Zoom app
Behind the Zoom app should be a Chrome browser tab
Click the option to Join from Your Browser
This will open a Zoom session in the browser, which is less buggy than the Zoom app
You may be asked to enter your name, verify you aren't a robot, and enter the meeting's passcode
Upcoming Screening for Kindergarten and New 1st Grade Students
Dear Caregiver,
Starting in December and ending the first part of January, staff will be screening kindergarten students for potential reading difficulties as required by Senate Bill 612. We have been doing this test since 2017, but it will be more visible during CDL. The screening will happen online during the school day. A reading support person will join the kindergarten teacher on their Zoom session and students may be put in a break-out room to read to the adult. The test should take no longer than 5 minutes as each of the 3 parts are timed for 1 minute. All grade K (and students new to 1st grade) will be getting screened for potential reading difficulties before the end of January.
Please don’t coach your child during this test. The distraction could hamper their score more than help, as the assessment is timed. It will be important we get an accurate picture of their reading abilities. If any concerns surface for your child, you will receive a letter by the end of January, along with a plan for supporting your child.
Thanks for your support.

Snowflake Hunt Challenge
This month Beaverton Safe Routes to School invites your school community to go on a Snowflake Hunt! To participate make a snowflake and place it in a window facing the street and then go for a walk and count how many snowflakes you find. We hope this provides your family with a fun activity and a little encouragement to get outside for a walk or roll. Use the link below for a snowflake making tutorial and make sure your trip is counted in the following ways:
1. Send an email to bsdsaferoutes@gmail.com with the number of snowflakes you found. BSD students (or parents) please include how many students participated and what school they are from.
2. BSD elementary students can also log their miles on their Marathon Kids account. If you need information on how to set up a Marathon Kids account, contact your PE teacher.
3. Post a photo to social media with the following hashtags #BSDsaferoutes #BSDtogether#BSDmarathonkids
