Hello Tigers,

Nathaniel Hawthorne is quoted, "time flies over us, but leaves its shadow behind". With 10 days remaining, the clock is undoubtedly ticking, leaving a prolific shadow of the 2020-21 school year in its wake. The legacy of this shadow is one of loss and discovery, distance and proximity, sorrow and joy, challenge and perseverance, mundanity and exceptionalism.

We undoubtedly await a summer that transitions us to a state of normalcy, moving us forward in subsequent years with the wisdom and grace of lessons learned. While there are many reasons to anxiously put a cap on this school year, my only caution is to temper hastiness, if for no other reason than to relish these fleeting moments of innocence that will be gone before you have chance to blink.

We plan to have a full day of instruction through the last day on June 18. TENTATIVELY, we will coordinate a device return (Chromebooks and iPads) at the end of that day. Power cords and Chromebook stylus should also be returned. Any family using a District-issued hotspot will need to return the hotspot as soon as the school year ends.

Students who are confirmed to attend Camp Achieve at Raleigh Park will keep their device through the end of the program.

We want to thank you for the work that you’re doing each and every day to support your child’s learning. We appreciate you taking on your role as an instructional guide. We couldn’t do this without your partnership.

This year’s elementary progress report looks a little different. Assessing a child’s knowledge, skills and understanding in Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) has been a challenge, and the assessment tools and assignments we normally use as evidence for progress may not accurately represent how your child is doing this year. Teachers provide feedback to daily work and assess along the way, but we acknowledge that children are still missing the multitude of opportunities to show what they know like they would with in-person instruction; therefore, it’s not equitable to provide a summary judgment.

This year, we’re suspending the practice of assigning proficiency to end-of-year learning targets. The progress report won’t show 1-4 proficiency marks. Instead, each section will indicate which targets have been taught during the semester, and another mark will reflect the student’s learning progress according to the evidence gathered during CDL. The Behavior, Language and Speaking & Listening sections won’t be assessed and will be grayed out.

The revised progress report is a reflection of how we continue to use our equity policy as a guide in our decision-making. And while we are pausing the traditional way in which we assess elementary students, we will return to proficiency-based grading at the elementary level when we move back into full in-person instruction.

We believe that Football is the best possible vehicle to teach these lifelong skills while participating in a tremendous game that teaches teamwork, self-discipline, self confidence while having fun with your friends! We would like to invite you to be a part of this experience at the Youth Level by registering to play this coming fall.

The Beaverton School District is very excited to adopt a new and improved platform for communication. Beginning July 1, we’ll transitionin to a product called ParentSquare to keep families better informed. ParentSquare will replace SchoolMessenger and any other texting/messaging apps like Remind or Talking Points that individual schools and teachers may be using. It will not replace ParentVUE, StudentVUE, Canvas or Seesaw.

ParentSquare provides a safe way for administrators, teachers, staff and parents to:

• Send and receive district, school and class information in your preferred language
• Share pictures and files
• See calendar items
• Sign up for conferences

• And much more… all in one place!

  
  

District, school, grade level and classroom information will be sent to your computer and/or phone via email and/or text. Or you can download the free iOS or Android app.

ParentSquare has a familiar design, similar to a social media feed. Families will only receive notifications that are relevant to their students. In addition to district- and school-wide messaging, teachers and staff will have access to two-way messaging with real-time translation. Families will be able to receive and send information in their chosen languages.

You don’t need to take any action to receive emails, texts or phone calls prior to the July 1 launch. Our student information system will sync contact information directly with ParentSquare. If you’d prefer to use the app, simply download it from the app store on or after July 1 and follow the prompts.

Each year, all K-4 students on an Administrative Student Transfer are rolled back to their neighborhood school; administrative transfers are year-to-year agreements and must be renewed.

There have been no changes to the hardship rules. All students must qualify for hardship in order to be approved for an Administrative Student Transfer, regardless of grade level, sibling status on open enrollment, siblings of students in specialized programs, or parent employment with the district.

The Oregon eviction protections are set to expire at the end of June. This means renters will need to pay back rent that's still due. The state will start taking applications May 18, for additional rental assistance through the Oregon Emergency Rent Assistance Program. People are eligible if at least one person in the household had a financial impact from the pandemic (a lost job, decrease in income), and their household income is at or below 80% of the area's median income (about $77,000 for a family of 4 in the Portland metro, or $51,000 in rural communities).

Tenants can be approved for up to 12 months of past-due rent, and three months' upcoming rent. The payments will go directly to landlords, property owners, and utility companies.

The money will be allocated based on need, so everyone who applies for the program will go through a review process.

Assistance is offered to all renters, regardless of citizenship or immigration status. Please reference the following link for information on how to apply.

Our Nutrition Services Department has been hard at work developing a plan for how to continue to provide free meals for all children during Hybrid and online learning. The USDA has provided waivers for the rest of the school year that allow any child (ages 1-18) to access free meals.

For Elementary Hybrid Students:

• Hybrid students can receive a free daily meal bag with breakfast, lunch and a supper snack to take home.
• Two days of meals will be sent home on Tuesday.
• No registration is required.

If you attend CDL, FLEX Online School or are a non-enrolled community child:

• All Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) students, FLEX students and children not enrolled in the Beaverton School District can access a free 5-day meal bag every Wednesday from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
• Meal bags include 5 breakfasts, 5 lunches and 5 supper snacks. Only children aged 4 and older are eligible for supper snacks.
• Families can select a school to pick up these meals on the Meal Bag Registration Form.
• Registration is strongly encouraged.
• Children do not need to be present to pick up meal bags.
• Anyone picking up meal bags must wear a mask.

Nutrition Services continues to offer free MEALS to all BSD children aged 1-18 with no Meal Benefits application required. This will continue until the end of the 2020-2021 school year.

The Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT)program, through DHS, will offer MONEY to families who qualify for Meal Benefits. The money is being offered to help families purchase groceries during the pandemic. Families who meet the criteria in this list for the 2020-2021 school year will receive P-EBT funds. No application or further action is needed by families who:

• Have students only at CEP schools (families who have students at CEP and non-CEP schools need to apply for the non-CEP students to receive funds)
  Have children who qualify for SNAP or TANF benefits
  Have children with Homeless, Foster, Migrant, or Runaway status
  Have applied and been approved for Meal Benefits at any time during the 2020-2021 school year.
• Families who do not meet any of the above criteria need to apply right away for Meal Benefits if they wish to be considered for P-EBT funds. Online applications are strongly encouraged, using www.schoolcafe.com. The SchoolCafe website supports English and Spanish applicants.
  
• Paper Meal Benefits applications, in both English and Spanish, are available at all meal pickup sites and all school offices.
