End of the school year newsletter!
Hello King Families,
As we begin to think about summer vacation, students are hard at work in class. Students in kindergarten and grade 2 continue to develop their English language in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. We begin each class with a daily routine. This involves a combination of a classroom expectations, calendar, letter identification, sounds, and the reading of common sight words. Students are introducing themselves to partners and telling each other about themselves while learning common vocabulary. Students have reading partners, read messages, and learn to read "just right" books.
In writing, students continue to use sentence starters, word banks, and sentence frames. There are five word lists that will be reviewed and can be found further down in this Smore. Many students are working on mastering list A. In writing, students will continue to practice how to label a picture, write letters on lined paper, and will learn to talk out ideas before trying to put those ideas onto paper. We are learning about capitals, spacing, and punctuation. Some students may draw a picture, write letters to resemble writing, or will be writing simple sentences to a picture. Others are beginning to develop a beginning, middle, and end to a picture using transition words and details. Students with higher proficiency levels are writing five sentences that can answer who, what, where, when, and why about a book they read with a partner. Additionally, with practice and participation, students are improving social and academic vocabulary, common greetings, and how to advocate for themselves when they need help.
ACCESS testing finished in February and assessment scores were just delivered. Parents will be receiving these scores on your child's language proficiency soon. Students demonstrated skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The remainder of the year students will focus on topics of writing to a prompt, reading passages with repetition and further difficulty, and continue to develop language around colors, food, greetings, and introductions. Over the summer I encourage you to practice reading and writing with your child, naming common vocabulary, and practice sight words.
Warm Regards,
Ms. Colby
