Patty Smith, M.S., is the Director of HR Learning and Development at Express Employment Professionals. Regarded as an HR expert, she offers clients extensive leadership and organization development solutions. She is known as a dynamic and strategic innovator with extensive experience in change management, organization development assessments and transformation, executive coaching, emerging brand strategic planning, succession planning, and knowledge management.

A Pennsylvania native, Smith holds a Bachelor’s of Arts in English with a focus in Sociology from Millersville University in Lancaster, PA. She also holds a Master’s of Science in Organization Development and Knowledge Management from George Mason University in Arlington, VA.

With ten years of experience as a strategic Human Resources professional, Smith has led full scale HR departments and has worked across several industries including: legal staffing and recruitment, healthcare and hospitality. Smith specializes in implementing, analyzing and measuring the success and ROI of organization development initiatives while still having an eye for impactful engagement programs and strategic, forward reaching ideas for organizations.

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day at UNL Innovation Campus

The University of Nebraska College of Engineering is co-sponsoring "Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day" at Nebraska Innovation Campus. The event is part of a national initiative and is run in conjunction with E-Week.

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day is free for girls in grades 3-12, will take place in two sessions,

• 2-4 pm
• 3-5 pm

at Innovation Studio, 2021 Transformation Drive, Suite 1500, Entrance B, Lincoln, NE 68508. There will also be a Parent & Educator Program in conjunction with the sessions.

SWE Officer Elections – May 2018
Have you thought about getting a little more involved with SWE? Have you ever thought about how your involvement in SWE could help you boost your career at work?

As a member, you probably already know that SWE is a great opportunity for you to meet and socialize with other engineers, share your skills and enthusiasm with our youth and introduce them to future careers in engineering. But, SWE is also an excellent organization to build and sharpen your management skills in a less stressful way than at your work.

You can build these skills by joining a committee or becoming an officer in our SWE Section. Most of the committee and officer positions require only an hour or two every month. This is a great way to learn more about SWE and get involved with this great organization. And it will look great in your portfolio at work!

Nominate Educators for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics & Science Teaching

The 2018 cycle of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is in full swing and we need your help! Today, the PAEMST team is launching our 2018 Nomination Drive.

We hope that you will help us spread the word about PAEMST by sharing information with your network of members and encouraging them to nominate a teacher or apply themselves.

Nominations can be submitted here. The nomination deadline is April 1, 2018, and the application deadline is May 1, 2018.

Did you know SWE's FY19 starts July 1st? Your SWE membership is not only crucial to your career and/or education, but it’s important for advancing STEM diversity all over the world.

Here’s a look at what SWE accomplished during the 2016-2017 membership year:

• Launched the SWE Research site, where we share studies that provide insight into workplace experiences and culture, and aim to improve the rates at which women pursue engineering careers.
• Hosted our very first WE Local conferences in San Jose, CA and Pittsburgh, PA – 2017 marked the year where SWE brought learning, networking and growth opportunities of the annual conference to your backyard!
• Hosted over 1,000 attendees at conferences and roundtables in locations around the world, including countries like India, China, Malaysia and the Netherlands.
• Solidified our place as the largest scholarship program for female engineers by awarding over $750K in scholarships to members and non-members!
• Got over 5,000 participants involved in the SWENext K-12 Outreach program, including K-12 girls and K-12 STEM adult advocates.

In addition to continuing current programs, SWE will offer even more innovative and inspiring benefits in the coming membership year.

You can look forward to WE Local conferences in five locations around the US, monthly orientations for new members, a SWE Training Program for executives and the expansion of our STEM Re-entry Task Force program.

The SWE Outreach Tool is a simple 10 question survey to complete after any of your STEM outreach events.

Volunteer for work? Yes - that counts!

You are a regular computer teacher at the library? Log your time!

Volunteer to judge at your child's science fair? Absolutely counts!

Help out the local 4-H Robotics Team? Yes - this too!

Any events that focus on students ages 4-18 and/or their adult advocates such as parents, educators, and group leaders. The data you enter will be used internally by the SWE Outreach Committee to set goals and make strategic decisions. The data will also be used externally with sponsors to show the impact of the outreach that all SWE members do. Many grants require the information we are collecting, and we need accurate information to share with them. Here’s the information you should gather together before you use this tool:

– Event name and date(s)

– Section name: I002 Eastern Nebraska

– Event type

– Number of girls who participated in the event

– Number of boys who participated in the event

– Age of students who participated (Estimates are okay; report the age range of the majority)

– Number of Adults who participated – These are Parents, Educators, and other non-volunteers who participated in the event.

– Number of SWE Member volunteers

– Number of other volunteers – not SWE members

– Name of Partner Organization(s), if applicable

Over 10 years ago, SWE launched an initiative designed to foster inclusiveness and engage the diverse members of our organization – SWE Affinity Groups. Affinity Groups are growing and members are sharing and embracing a common element of diversity to work collaboratively and support each other. The current Affinity Groups are: African-American, Latinos, Native American, Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender/Queer and Allies, Global Women Engineers, Women in Government, Small Business and Entrepreneur. These teams are working to enhance and promote networking mechanisms to connect members. These Affinity Groups are a great way for members to share knowledge, concerns, and experiences with each other and SWE partners and to provide feedback to SWE on making the networks a more powerful resource.
