Celebrating Black History Month
February is Black History Month, and EMS's celebration theme will be "Black Excellence in Education." We will highlight various HBCUs in Maryland, Virginia, DC, and Pennsylvania and how they have been vital to educating excellent leaders in America and around the globe. We would also like our EMS families to be a part of this celebration. If you, family members, or friends have attended or graduated from an HBCU, please send pictures to the EMS media center or email photos to Dr. Johnson (wnjohnson@smcps.org) so they can be added to our fantastic community bulletin board.

Career Advisor Update
During the month of January, Ms. McGhee continued to meet with 7th and 8th grade students to complete the Learning & Productivity Assessment in Naviance. This assessment helps students understand their preferences for how to learn (seeing, hearing, or doing). The student is also given strategies to be more successful through changing their study environment.
In February, the 7th graders will complete a lesson on RIASEC or Holland’s Code. Understanding their work personality type, or Holland code, will help them focus on types of careers that will better suit their interests. The 8th graders will complete a Naviance lesson on time management, an important skill for everyone. The 8th graders also completed a personality assessment with their guidance counselor, Ms. Abney. Ask your child about their results!
