THANK YOU everybody for your amazing generosity with our Cans on Court day.

We were able to pass on over 2000 food items to the St Mary’s parish foodbank!!!!!!!!

Your donations filled more than 15 supermarket trolleys – a good work-out for our House Captains as they lifted, carried, pushed, and helped sort all of the cans and food packets.

Chavoin House had the most donations followed by Austin, Bernard and Pompallier.

Chavoin House will celebrate by having a comfy colourful clothing day this Wednesday (17th August).

A big thank you to the House Captains and to each one of you for your aroha to our parish whānau.

We are very fortunate to have some of our children begin work with renowned NZ artist Peata Larkin in bringing to life our children's plans for a Prayer/reflection area behind the church. The student leaders of 2021 (unfortunately Covid interfered with our plans to complete this in 2021) came up with the original designs and Peata will work with the 2022 Manaakitanga team and Cultural Leaders to bring this space to fruition. Peata and the children are very excited about working together on this Visual Arts/RE project. We thank Peata for her time, passion and commitment in working with our tamariki.

Peata Larkin (b. Rotorua, Aotearoa New Zealand) graduated with a Master of Fine Art from RMIT, Melbourne in 2009, after receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland (2004). Peata Larkin’s work operates in a space between binary constructions – Māori/Pākehā, past/present, art/science, matter/spirit – weaving cultures and spheres of knowledge together into new hybrid forms. In 2018, Larkin was the recipient of the Kaipara Wallace Arts Trust Award Residency at Altes Spital in Solothurn, Switzerland and awarded the Molly Morpeth Canaday Award in 2006.

In 2013, Larkin completed the large-scale commission, Piki Ake – Rise Up, for the ANZ Tower in Auckland’s central business district. Following the success of this project Larkin has received consistent public and private commissions including Westgate, Newmarket (2018), Park Hyatt, Wynyard Quarter (2019) and a new large-scale commission for the International Conference Centre, Auckland, which opened in late 2019. Recent exhibitions include, Tauhere, Auckland Arts Festival, Silo 6, Wynyard Quarter, Auckland (2018), Auau_I Repeat, Pataka Art and Museum (2016), Ngā aho tāruarua, Corban Estate Arts Centre (2016). Her work is held in the collections of Memphis Museum of Fine Arts, USA, Rotorua Museum Arts Trust, Pataka Art + Museum, Waikato University and Massey University.

We are making a slight change to our use of the entry gates on Kitenui Avenue for your morning drop off.

The large double gates will remain closed before school in order to allow netball and football games to be played.

Children and/or accompanying adults can continue to gain entry to the school through the single gate beside the Church or through the gate from the Staff carpark.

End of day pickup from Kitenui Ave remains unchanged however we again ask you to consider the overall safety of all our tamariki and park further away in order to lessen congestion and minimize the risk to all whānau.

We have become aware that, once again, some parents and caregivers are risking the health and safety of our children at pick up and drop off times. PLEASE REMEMBER:

• NEVER pull in/park in the church driveways

• NEVER park/drop off/pick up on yellow lines

• NEVER use the school driveways OR STAFF CARPARK for pick up/drop off

• NEVER park on berms

We need to take responsibility to keep our children safe.

Mrs Phillips is a Nana! Meadow Phillips arrived safely on Wednesday 10 August! Meadow is the daughter of Carolynn's son Christian and his partner Holly. Congratulation's Phillips family - Meadow is just gorgeous!

We also welcome Caiden's wee brother Koa and Genevieve's little sister Alice! We know what an amazing big brother and big sister you are Caiden and Genevieve - Congratulations!

CALL OUT FOR AUCTION ITEMS

The Marist PTFA is planning its major fundraiser and also its annual Golf Day in Term 3. You have heard about the exciting plans to upgrade our school hall, so we have a key fundraising target to meet. Donations of any items which could be used for auctions would be appreciated: vouchers to businesses, the use of a family bach for a weekend, even services which you could provide to the community. Any items can be left with the school office.

As you may be aware, we had to postpone the annual Marist Primary Golf Day earlier this year from its traditional March date due to Covid. However to give you something to look forward to, we now have a date for this years event!

For those who haven’t attended before, it is an awesome, fun, social day for men and ladies, from those who have never played, through to pros.

Tickets are $110 per player and the entry fee covers green fees, generous beers and snacks on the course, and supper afterwards.

We are looking for both players and sponsors. In terms of sponsorships we have:

• The naming rights - $1,200 which gets you four entries and two carts, in addition to naming rights.
• Holes sponsorships of $200 for the 18th hole and $100 for every other hole.
• Auction / prize donations also gratefully accepted.

A reminder that if your child is away from school for any reason you must let the office know. It is good to let your child's Hub teachers know too, but it is essential the office is included in the communication.

At Marist School we use Spotlight to upload and share your child/rens ongoing progress and achievement throughout the year. The last couple of years have been so disruptive but it is really important that you download the APP in order to see your child’s learning progress.

If you have not set up your Spotlight App yet or have not been using it, please contact Beth in the office on b.lockie@marist.school.nz for your unique ID. Once you have your ID you will be able to follow the instructions below to set up the app.

If you want to order school lunches we have a couple of options...

The most popular is the corner dairy! You can pop in there in the morning before school and order pies, sausage rolls and samosas. The lovely dairy people take the children's names and Hub numbers and deliver the orders to the office at lunchtime. You can also order drinks (juices or flavoured milk), cookies, bags of nuts etc

On Tuesday the 2nd of August The Marist Chess Team went to the regional chess tournament that was held at Cornwall Park School. The names of the members in the team were Caitlin, Kowhai, Maddy, Tas, Caiden, Aiden, Benjonas, Liam, Francis, and Nico. We felt nervous and a bit scared but we were happy to get the chance to get some more experience. We all played 7 matches of chess.

There were 6 schools competing at the chess tournament. During each match we had a chess clock that we had to press after each move. After you played a game of chess if you won it you would be playing someone that won their last game. For a win you got one point, a draw 0.5 and if you lost you got no points. You could earn badges for different things relating to chess.

Our team scored 32 points. The highest score in our team twas Aiden who got 4.5 and Caitlin got 4 points. At the end they gave out the awards to the schools that got into nationals. Sadly we came 5th and didn’t make it into the next tournament. After they called out the other teams to get their certificate we received merit certificates. Caitlin got at least 4 points so she was invited to the next tournament in Rotorua. Thank you to all the parent helpers who volunteered to help at the chess tournament.

Caitlin and her family will be travelling to Rotorua for the Champion of Champions Tournament to represent Marist School. They are a family of 5 and are wondering if any one from our community has a holiday home, or knows of any reasonably priced accommodation for the

weekend of the 28th October. Please make contact with the office if you can assist in any way.

A few weeks ago, we did our altar serving training for St Mary’s Church with Father Carlo.

On Sunday some of us did our first altar serving. We were given special necklaces with crosses on them from Father. It was pretty fun and nerve racking.

Olly: It was fun and slightly hard because you had to remember everything and I mean EVERYTHING!

Katherine: It was a very fun and a little bit scary experience.

William: I was nervous but in the end it was really fun to help out the Parish.

Hana: I felt very confident because Father was helping us. It was also very fun to learn.

Hub 1 began their science inquiry locating information about plants and biodiversity in our environment.

We drew on Mrs Dot’s expert knowledge of native plants. She brought native cuttings in from her garden and took us on a tour identifying plants in our school environment. Thank you Mrs Dot!

We carefully observed and classified them into groups according to their leaves: leaf shape, size, edges, stem, placement.

We also did some scientific sketching:

We learnt more about the different parts of flowers and their different jobs when dissecting lillies.

We are learning to use coordinates and use North, East, South and West to give directions and positions on maps. This is Ethan Profit challenging us to decode his secret message using his coordinates!

In Hub 1 we have been learning about life in the early Church. This week, we have been focusing on the journeys of St Paul and how he relied on his faith to help him to spread God's word in very difficult circumstances. We used our research to plan and present interviews about the life of St Paul.

In this video, Jayson, William and Ed share a little about the life of St Paul.

This week at Garden to Table we explored some different pizza bases. We used a pasta sauce we had made and kept from our tomatoes and used yummy vegetables from the garden as toppings.

In the garden, we were busy keeping the garden weed free and cleaning up the paths and walkways. We also put some straw around our strawberry plants to help them grow.

This year we are continuing with Marist Meals - a pastoral care initiative. These meals are provided to families in the school & parish community when a little extra support is needed (e.g. a new baby, sickness, bereavement). With the impact of covid and many of our school and parish families isolating or unwell, it would be great if we could fill up the freezer so we can help lighten the load for families during these challenging times.

If you would like to contribute, we welcome any homemade, brought meals or baking for our freezer. Meals can be dropped off to the school office.

In addition to medical masks, P2/N95 particulate respirator masks are also available from the providers mentioned.

P2/N95 masks will be prioritised for those people at higher risk of severe illness if they contract COVID-19. This includes people:

• who are older
• who live in aged care facilities
• who are pregnant
• with a disability
• who live with mental health conditions or addictions
• of Māori and Pacific ethnicity
