Spooky Season at SHS
The halls were full of spooky spirit on Tuesday. Students weren't the only ones dressed up; SHS had a faculty/staff costume contest, with departments teaming up for some elaborate outfits. During Packer Block, students enjoyed candy, face painting, games and more in the library.
Dia de los Muertos
Spanish I classes created an "ofrenda" for Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Students also took photos with props and a backdrop.

From the Student Health Clinic
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The Code of Virginia (§ 22.1-273) requires vision and hearing screening of all students in Kindergarten, 3rd grade, 7th grade, and 10th grade. Volunteers from the Smithfield Lions Club are partnering with the school clinic to provide these screenings and will be at Smithfield High School on Friday, November 17, 2023. If you choose for your student to NOT participate in these screenings, please notify Nurse Moorefield in writing by _Thursday, November 9, 2023_.
If you have any questions, I can be reached at lmoorefield@iwcs.k12.va.us.

Thank a Teacher Art Contest
Each year through the Thank a Teacher campaign, the Virginia Lottery encourages students, parents and the general public to send thank-you notes to Virginia’s deserving public school teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week. Since 2016, winning teachers have been prized with Virginia vacations, gift cards and money for their school.
Now is the time to submit artwork. We are looking for three students to have their artwork featured on thousands of thank-you notes to be distributed during Teacher Appreciation Week in May.
The contest is open to all K-12 students enrolled in one of Virginia’s public schools (not just art students!). One top-prize winner will be selected from each level: elementary school, middle school and high school. The three winners will see their artwork featured on the 2024 thank-you notes. They’ll also receive a $200 Visa® gift card and win $2,000 in supplies for their school’s art department from the Lottery and our valuable partners at The Supply Room.
Submissions will be accepted now through November 13, 2023. For more information about the Thank a Teacher Art Contest, including official rules, eligibility and entry requirements, visit www.ThankaTeacherVA.com.
