𧑠Principals Corner:
πAs the weather gets cooler, I wanted to remind Rex parents/guardians to please make sure that your student is dressed appropriately for the changing weather. Layered clothing is best so if it gets warmer in the afternoon, students can take off their coats/jackets. However, please mark them with the student's name. Our lost and found is already getting full of items and the colder season is just starting for us!
Also, just another reminder that doors do not open until 8:10 a.m. for breakfast. This is district policy. Please don't have your student here too early because there are no teachers contracted to supervise them. It's not safe to have a large amount of students running around outside as well as it's going to get cold.
The best time to have students here to school is between 8:10-8:20 a.m. Any later makes it difficult for them to get to class, put down their things, get to the breakfast room, eat, and get back to class before 8:35 a.m.
Finally, breakfast starts at 8:10 a.m. when the doors open. We want to make sure that everyone gets a chance to eat a good breakfast. So you know, the Roadrunner Show starts at 8:35 a.m. and MTSS, which is a time where students work on their reading skills individualized for him/her, starts at 8:45 a.m. Please have your student(s) here in plenty of time to eat and get to class so they don't miss anything important!
I hope to see everyone at the fourth grade music program or the Rex Tailgate later this month. See the calendar for details!

𧑠Instructional Coach Corner:
What does retelling, summarizing, main idea, predicting, clarifying and questioning all have in common? These are essential comprehension skills that every child needs in order to understand the text that they read.
Teachers use a variety of tools to help your child comprehend such as graphic organizers, modeling βthink-aloudsβ while reading, activating their prior knowledge to help βhookβ your child to the text and asking higher-level thinking questions.
Some ways you can help your child comprehend the stories or passages they are reading are to start with that emotional hook. Ask your child why they chose the book they picked out at the library. What do they know about the topic or some key vocabulary words? Model a βthink-aloudβ such as βIβm wondering why there is an empty lake on the front coverβ¦β Ask your child to identify some words that they might need clarified. Have them predict what will happen before they start the next chapter.
Showing in interest and engaging in your childβs reading will help cement those comprehension skills and instill a love for reading.
Each month I will post information regarding literacy strategies or math skills that might be helpful for you and your child at home. If you have any questions, please call me at 554-2281 or email brlolling@usd261.com.

𧑠Counseling Corner:
Hi Rex Families,
We have started the second nine weeks and they will surely go quickly with all the Holidays and days off! Please remember that the Rex Building Leadership Team is keeping track of behavior and attendance for the next Beep Beep Bash. Attendance and behavior are both district goals that we at Rex are We want your student(s) there and able to attend. This is a great way to encourage your student(s) to make safe choices at school and be at school ready to learn!
If you know of a Rex Family in need during the Holidays, please reach out to me as soon as possible at gobrien@usd261.com and we will work together to see if we can find resources for them. Typically, cut off dates are early, so we want to get them information as soon as we can. Please also watch for flyers and dates for our annual food drive and other events.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know! I hope you all have a fun and safe Thanksgiving break!
Mrs. Georgia O'Brien
π Please remind students to walk using our staffed crosswalk. Not near the middle school in the morning & after school for their protectionπ
School crossing guards help children safely cross the street. The crossing guards also remind drivers of the presence of pedestrians.
Drivers β watch for school crossing guards! They are easy to recognize with their bright orange vests, and they hold a βstop signβ upright when escorting children across the street! Motorists must STOP BEFORE reaching the crosswalk when the stop sign is UPRIGHT! Be courteous and attentive to the crossing guard, especially in bad weather. Slow early and know what is behind you β
Letβs keep our kids and crossing guards safe!
Our lost & found is getting full and itβs going to start getting colder.
Please mark your childrenβs jackets with their name to make it easier to return to your student(s)!
BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
BATTLE OF THE BOOKS! Third through fifth grade. Participation forms have gone home. If your 3rd - 5th grade student would like to participate in Battle of the Books this year, the form needs to be returned by November 15th before Thanksgiving break. The competitions will begin in late January. The final district competition will be March 5th.

Lunch Account:
Don't forget to put money on your students card!
Lunch- free and reduced:
Many parents do not realize that they qualify for free or reduced school lunches. Breakfast is free again to all students. However, not lunch, and if there are not funds in their lunch account, students will be served an alternate meal of a PBJ sandwich. Applying for free and reduced lunches can really help with a familyβs budget for other needed items. It only takes 5 minutes to fill out the application and itβs completely confidential.
The USD261 district online form is at this link
https://schoolmealsapp.ksde.org/Home/welcome/D0261
And if you would rather fill out a paper copy of the application, we can send one home to you.
Many parents are surprised that they qualify. Please fill out the application. We want every child to get their choice of a good lunch! Ask the office, if you have any questions.
We would be glad to help!
