No School Monday, February 19th-Friday, February 23rd
Just a reminder that there is no school next week, February 19th-23rd. We hope you have a wonderful week off and we will look forward to seeing you on Monday, February 26th.
PBIS Assembly~Respect/Love
This week SLVE students enjoyed wonderful presentations by Ms. Jane's kindergarten class and Ms. Berk's 2nd grade class. SLE's theme of the month is respect. At our Wednesday assemblies, classes talked about how showing respect is showing how we care for ourselves and others.
Respect is kindness through our thoughtful words and actions. Respect is taking care of each other, our school, and our earth. Respect is love. Mrs. Stevenson's kindergarten class made a beautiful poster that read "Respect is Love" They helped students to learn what being respectful and sharing love looks like, sounds like, and feels like. Mrs. Berk's second-grade class showed a wonderful video that included the song "All We Need Is Love". Her class also presented what love means to them and they shared the beautiful art that went along with their posters.

SLVE Family STEM Night
Family STEM night was a fun and successful event! There were eight stations, including making slime, building catapults, constructing straw rockets, and learning about heart rate math. It was awesome to see many community members engaged in science activities together, including students, parents, grandparents, teachers, high school volunteers, and even the Felton public library. Thank you to the Bobcat Club for making STEM night happen.
STEAM Expo was a huge success!
A huge shout out to this year's STEAM Expo participants! We had more students than ever before who went above and beyond to explore a topic that interested them and put together a presentation to share their findings. Topics included plants, wind farms, erosion, water quality, crystals, volcanoes, clouds, robotics and animatronics, magnets and more! All of the projects demonstrated a lot of hard work, curiosity and creativity. Great job, kids! And, thank you to the many parent volunteers who came to interview students on Monday morning, giving participants a chance to share what they learned. I think they each learned a little something too!
SLVE TK and Kindergarten Registration
1. Prepare for Registration. SLVE opens new TK and Kinder student registration on January 29th. Please review the registration page to determine if your child is eligible for TK or Kindergarten and all the documents needed to complete the Enrollment Process.
2. Plan to attend our TK/Kindergarten Meet/Greet: As we move into Spring, we will announce a date for our Annual Meet and Greet for incoming students . It’s an opportunity for adults to meet the Principal, Teachers, inquire about our Transportation and Nutrition Programs, and get to know more about our school and our TK/ kindergarten program.
SLVE Intent to Return Form~PLEASE complete
It's hard to believe that we are already looking ahead to next year. In order to get an idea of our enrollment for next year, please take a moment to complete the intent to return form for all current TK-4th grade students. We hope to get 100% of our families to complete the form by 2/16. Having these numbers helps us determine our classes for the 2024/2025 school year.

Please remember 4th and 5th grade classes are in session from 2:15-3:00
We'd like to remind SLVE families that school is still in session for our 4th/5th graders from 2:15-3:00 each day. If you are waiting on the picnic tables during this time, it is VERY important to remember that students are still in classrooms finishing up their school day. The playstructure has become very busy during this time which can be distracting for our students and teachers. It is best if we keep this area calm and quiet. If you do have younger students who are waiting for an older sibling during this time it is important that they are monitored and that the SLVE play structure rules are followed. Thank you for respecting this request.
Community Opportunities Website
The "Community Opportunities" website link is provided as a courtesy to parents and students, by the San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District, to enable you to receive information of current local events and opportunities for adults and/or children.
Reminders for Parents/Guardians when picking up students for appointments or early dismissal.
When excusing your student for an appointment or early pickup, please be sure to follow these important safety procedures and protocols. Parent/Guardian needs to check in with the front office. Front office staff will first verify the person is on the student’s Emergency Contact list and then call the student’s teacher. Parent/Guardian will need to remain in the office until the student arrives in the office. Parent/Guardian will then check out the student—date, name, exit time. If the student is returning, the student will need to check back in through the front office (enter time in) and return to class. It is not necessary for parents to walk their child to class, but if they do, they must follow Check-in procedures.
SLVE Parking Reminders
It is very important that when parking at SLVE, you are only parking in designated parking spots. Many people have been parking in the fire lane and other non designated parking spots. The SC County Sheriff's office has been ticketing any cars that are not parked in designated spots. Cars parked in non designated spots may be towed. Buses and cars need to be able to pass through the parking lot safely and with plenty of room to keep everyone safe. PLEASE follow these parking rules so that everyone stays safe and no one gets a ticket or gets towed. It is very important that handicapped parking spots are reserved for drivers who have a DMV issued handicapped placard and who benefit from using them. We thank you for your thoughtful cooperation concerning access to these parking spots.
Just a heads up from the SLVE Health Office....
We have had a few cases of head lice at school this week. Please be sure to check your child's head on a regular basis. Here is a link with more information and what to look for. We ask that you inform the office right away if you do find any lice (bugs) or nits (eggs) and keep your child home. They can be back at school after treatment and when there are no live bugs found. Please note that your kiddo must be cleared through the health office with a quick scalp check when returning to school after treatment. Thank you!
Absences, Every Day Matters....
We know people get sick, people get injured, and there can be family or life responsibilities and other issues that are reasonable and excused. But if your student can attend, they need to be in school. If your student is out for three or more consecutive days, we may request a doctor’s note to continue excusing the absences. Students who miss 3-5 days will receive a Chronic Absence letter. We will then meet with those families to attempt to support the student attending school. On the second Chronic Absence Letter, families may be required to meet at the District Office to put a plan in place for the student’s attendance. On the third Chronic Absence Letter, families may be required to meet with the County Office Student Attendance Review Board for truancy. Our goal is that nobody ever gets that far along with truancy. We are here to help and support, but it does start at home with the expectation that your student will attend school regularly.
Please remember that students who are absent 3 days or more should complete an independent study contract. Lisa Ghelardi, at lblairghelardi@slvusd.org our SLVE Registrar, will work with families to get the paperwork and the missed classwork assignments needed to complete the contract.
