Lawrence Onward #3

The District is following recent guidance issued by the state education department to assure the health and safety of students, staff and their families. As a result, plans are being developed to allow the district to implement three instructional models based on analysis of health and safety factors. These models, as required by state education are;

In Person Instruction- in which all members of the school communities attend “live” in person instruction ( as in Pre- pandemic schooling)

Remote Instruction- similar to spring 2019 in which no children are attending in school buildings for instruction but access classes through their District issued Chromebooks. Adjustments to schedules from Spring 2019 would take place.

Hybrid Model- ( a blend of in person/ remote) - in which each grade is divided into cohorts ( likely based on last name ) to allow children in the same family to be in the same cohort regardless of school they attend. The cohorts rotate one week live in person / one week remote.

The commitment Lawrence makes is to educational excellence within the Governor's directives (expected to be issued by August 7th). Health and safety must be the guiding principle for this decision. Currently, Lawrence is surveying families to assess their comfort level with each model. Please know that in addition to health and safety the commitment to educational excellence remains our top priority. We are committed to ensuring each and every learner reach their potential.

The facilities department is preparing the schools by deep cleaning, removing excess materials and ordering personal protection equipment ( PPE), and cleaning disinfecting supplies. Lawrence is in constant and close communication with our food service company that allows our students to eat in a safe and secure environment requiring food to be delivered and eaten in classrooms. This strategy for breakfast/lunch delivery would be needed as large gathering spaces ( I.e. cafeterias) will have to be closed. Learners on their remote week would have access to breakfast and lunch distribution.

The transportation department is awaiting the responses to proposals from bus companies following mandated procedures for awarding contracts in a school setting. State guidance continues to be analyzed regarding the numbers of children that would be permitted on buses given social distancing requirements.

The curriculum department recognizes the importance of proper educational assessment. Determining if there has been any “ COVID slide” or regression of skills during the pandemic and summer months and developing intervention is of primary importance.

Child nutrition continues to be addressed with food distribution taking place at our Broadway campus. Please see further information on Lawrence.org.

Summer courses in reading through the Fast Forword program for remediation are monitored by our teaching staff.

Access to online programs Are available to all learners with their Chromebooks

Each learner is encouraged to use their MyON account to read daily delivered news stories and access their IXL practice for math skills.
